Culture : Le yodel
Avant de faire partie du folklore suisse, le yodel était supposément utilisé pour
communiquer dans les Alpes suisses en utilisant l’écho produit par les montagnes.
Ce chant consiste à passer rapidement d’une voix de corps à une voix de tête, ce qui
demande beaucoup de rigueur et une grande précision. Chanté le plus souvent en
suisse-allemand, le yodel varie selon la langue et la région du pays. Chaque région a
ses propres fêtes consacrées au yodel, et tous les trois ans une fête fédérale est
organisée où les yodleurs du pays entier se présentent devant un jury pour recevoir
un classement.
Le yodel est chanté a cappella par un chœur d’hommes vêtus d’habits
traditionnels et positionnés en arc de cercle pour mieux s’entendre. Les chœurs
d’hommes peuvent accueillir jusqu'à trois femmes. Au-delà, on parle de chœur mixte.
Il existe aussi des chœurs féminins, composés de femmes qui portent de fabuleuses
robes traditionnelles.
Le yodel est très répandu en Suisse. Les habitants donnent beaucoup
d’importance à la préservation des valeurs traditionnelles et coutumes ancestrales.
Dès le début du XXe siècle, le yodel a été utilisé dans des chansons de musique
Country, où on l’entend toujours chez certains musiciens.
Prior to becoming a part of Swiss folk culture, yodeling was supposedly used
for communicating in the Alps, using the echo produced by the mountains. This form
of singing consists of changing rapidly between one’s chest voice and one’s head
voice, which requires a lot of rigor and precision. Most often sung in Swiss German,
yodeling varies by region of the country and by the language being used. Each
region has its own festivals dedicated to yodeling, and every three years a national
festival is organized where yodelers from the entire country sing for a jury who will
issue them a ranking.
A yodel is traditionally sung a cappella by a men’s choir, dressed in traditional
clothing and arranged in a semi-circle so they can better hear each other. Men’s
choirs can include up to three women, after which they are known as a combined
choir. Women’s choirs also exist, normally dressed in fabulous traditional dresses.
Yodeling is very wide-spread in Switzerland. The inhabitants believe in the
importance of preserving traditional values and their ancestors’ customs. Starting in
the 20th century, yodeling has also been used in Country music, where it can still be
heard today in the work of certain musicians.
