M2 : Génie Civil Géo-mécanique : Ouvrages, Eau, Réservoirs (GEO2) Année 2016-2017 Proposition de projet d’initiation à la recherche Title : Influence of fault heterogeneity on the frequency content of seismic waves Description: Understanding the wave shape and frequency content of seismic waves is important to design appropriate earthquake-resistant buildings. The non-linear rupture process as well as the propagation path both influence the frequency content but it is difficult to separate their effect on the resulting seismic wave at the surface. Although it is well known that the high density of small fractures in the rock surrounding the fault makes the area extremely heterogeneous, the influence of this heterogeneity has been rather disregarded. In particular, it is expected that localization (in the sense of Anderson) of high-frequency waves around the fault may influence to a large extent the frequency content of seismic waves at the surface. This projects aims at conducting a literature review on the influence on the frequency content of seismic waves of these three phenomena: (I) non-linear rupture process, (ii) propagation path, and (iii) heterogeneity in the vicinity of the fault. As it is the less studied, a particular emphasis will be put on the last item. Keywords : Geophysics, Wave propagation in heterogeneous media, Seismic faults Some starting references: G. Hillers, M.
