After29yearsofserviceMWOPatersonwillberetiringfromtheCFonthe15thofApril2016.
Onhis20thbirthdayinJanuaryof1987ErniesignedthedottedlineinVancouverBCandwas
whiskedawaytoCornwallisNSaskinghimselfallthewhilewhatamIdoinghere.Aftergetting
overthecultureshockhegraduatedfrombasictraininginthespringandenjoyedasummerat
WasagaBeach,ImeanBordenonhis3’s.HisveryfirstpostingwastoCalgarywherehespent
thenext5yearswith1SvcBn.Heenjoyedhistimethereespeciallytheproximitytothe
mountains.
In1992hepackedupandpreparedhimselfforthedaunting3hrmovetoEdmonton,wherehe
wasinforquiteashock,commonlyreferredtoastheAirforce,butafterawhilehegottoenjoy
therecrazyways.In1995hegothisfirsttasteofadventurewithanall-expensespaidtripto
Haitiforsixmonths.Uponhisreturnhespentthenext5yearswith408Sqnandrunningthe
aircraftsupplysectionwhichhefondlyremembersasoneofthebestjobsheeverhad,heeven
managedtogettwotourstoBosniawiththem.AfterbeingpromotedtoMCplin2001,hewas
postedto1GSBnwherehespenttwoyearsinR&DandoneyearintheOpsandtrgCell.
HewaspromotedtoSgtinthesummerof04andpostedtoWainwrightattheBattleSchoolas
aninstructor.I’mcertainyoucanstillseehisheelmarksinthepavementofHwy14,ashewas
dragginghisfeetthewholewayashewasn’ttoohappytobegoing.Thebrightsideis,aftertwo
andahalfyearsofbeingtherehelooksbackonitasbeingthebestpostingofhiscareer.
Inthespringof2007ErniewaspostedtoColdLake(makesyouwonderifhewouldeverleave
Alberta)wherehewouldspendthenext2andahalfyearswiththe4AirfieldEngineering
SquadronwherehewasemployedastheSquadronQuartermaster.
IntheSummerof2010hewaspromotedtoWOandpostedtobacktoEdmontonwith1SvcBn
againwhereheheldanassortmentofpositions,MaintCQ,CbtSupPlWOandSCOPlWO.He
waspromotedtoMWOinthesummerof2014andpostedto1CMBGHQandSigsSqnasthe
SupporttroopSergeantMajortopresent.
ErnieandhiswifeRoberta’sretirementdayswillbespentcampingasmuchaspossibleand
visitingtheirsevengrandchildren.TherewillbeDWDluncheonheldattheCelticKnottinSt.

C.-B.,etilestparachutéàCornwallis,enN.-É.,etpassesontempsàsedemandercequ’ilfaitlà.
Unefoislechocculturelencaissé,ilterminesoninstructionélémentaireauprintempsetprofite
ensuitedesonétéàlaplageWasaga,jeveuxdireàBordenpoursonNQ3.Ilentamesa
premièreaffectationàCalgaryetilypasselescinqannéessuivantesau1BonSvc.Ilappréciele
tempsqu’ilypasse,surtoutlefaitqu’ilestàproximitédesmontagnes.
En1992,ilpliebagageetilsepréparementalementàsondéménagementàEdmonton,unlong
3heuresderoute.Ilencaissetoutunchoc,etsetrouveoùl’onappellelaForceaérienne,mais
aprèsuncertainmoment,ilapprendàappréciersesfollesfaçonsdefonctionner.En1995,il
goûteàunepremièreaventuregrâceàunvoyageenHaïtitoutesdépensespayées.Àson
retour,ilpasseles5prochainesannéesauseindu408Esc,etildirigelasectionde
l’approvisionnementdesaéronefs.Celareprésenteselonluil’undesmeilleursemploisqu’ila
occupés;ilamêmeparticipéàdeuxmissionsenBosnieavecl’Escadron.Aprèsavoirétépromu
augradedecplcen2001,ilestaffectéau1BonSG,etilpassedeuxansàlaR.etD.etunanàla
CelldesOpsetdel’instr.
Ilestpromusgtàl’été2004etilestaffectéàWainwrightàl’Écoledecombatentant
qu’instructeur.Onpeutprobablementencorevoirsesmarquesdetalonsurlaroute14.Il
traînaitsespiedstoutlelongdutrajetlemenantautravail,cariln’aimaitpastropcequ’il
faisait.Pourtant,ilypassedeuxansetdemi,etilledécritaujourd’huicommelameilleure
affectationdesacarrière.
Auprintemps2017,ErnieestaffectéàColdLake(c’estàsedemanders’ilquitteraunjour
l’Alberta),etilpasselesdeuxannéesetdemiesuivantesau4eEscadrondugéniedel’airentant
quequartier-maîtredel’Escadron.
Àl’étéde2010,ilestpromuadjudantetilestànouveauaffectéàEdmonton,encoreunefois
au1BnSvcoùiloccupedifférentspostes,QMMaint,adjPonApproCbtetadjPonOCS.Ilest
promuaugraded’adjumàl’étéde2014,etilestaffectéauQG1GBMCetEscTransentantque
sergent-majordelatrouped’appui,postequ’iloccupeàl’heureactuelle.
