Au-delà des flammes
Si je vous dis “Metalcore”, vous me répondez ? Non, pas Bring Me The
Horizon, petit con ! Tu sors ! Vous me répondez Killswitch Engage,
évidemment ! Les fers du lance du genre, originaires du Massachussets ont
toujours su mener de mains de maîtres la barque qui leur avait été offerte
dès 2002. Pourtant, le départ surprenant du frontman Howard Jones en 2012
nous permettait de mettre en doute la suite du parcours du groupe. C'était
sans compter sur le transfert à moitié inattendu de Jesse Leach, qui avait
déjà retrouvé son pote Adam D. au sein de Times of Grace un an
auparavant. Plongé immédiatement dans le bain grâce à un album
pratiquement terminé sur le plan instrumental lors de son arrivée, le
chanteur originel de Killswitch Engage allait faire son retour dans le groupe
dix ans après son départ, et grâce à une série de tournée couronnées de
succès. Dans quelques jours, Disarm The Descent verra le jour et viendra
s'ajouter à l'excellente discographie du groupe américain, dont le nouveau
venu a accepté de nous parler en tant que nouveau membre actif
fraîchement réssuscité au sein du line-up.

Sponge (Rock'N'Balls): Tout d'abord, Jesse, cela doit être très spécial pour toi de faire à
nouveau la promotion d'un album de Killswitch Engage onze ans après la sortie de Alive
or Just Breathing ! Comment vis-tu cet évènement ?
Jesse Leach: C'est super, nous passons vraiment du bon temps. C'est une sorte de
transition naturelle, car je suis très ami avec ces gars-là, rejoindre le groupe n'étant donc
pas réellement stressant pour moi. Je me sens vraiment à l'aise avec eux.
S: Comment se passe la tournée australienne en cours ?
Jesse: Oh c'est génial, mec ! Nous avons déjà joué deux jours de suite, et les fans sont
super, le temps est magnifique, aujourd'hui nous étions en pause, j'ai donc passé la
journée à la plage, et c'était excellent, parce que quand on vient de New York avec sa
neige... c'était plutôt terrible de pouvoir aller à la plage (rires). L'Australie c'est vraiment
cool, les gens ici sont très sympas et les fans sont géniaux !
S: Tu as déjà tourné pas mal avec Killswitch Engage depuis ton retour dans le groupe, j'ai
personnellement eu la chance de vous voir au Graspop Metal Meeting en Belgique l'été
dernier, et les réactions du public étaient excellentes. Comment as-tu vécu ce retour sur
scène ?
Jesse: Oui, ça sonnait vraiment bien, et les fans étaient géniaux et très réceptifs ! En fait, je
fais simplement du mieux que je peux, et j'essaie de mettre beaucoup de passion dans ce
que je fais, tu vois, même sur les chansons que je n'ai pas composées avec les autres. Je
pense que quand tu crois en quelque chose et que tu prends du plaisir, le public peut
sentir qu'il y a un amour sincère dans ce que tu fais.
S: Pourquoi avez-vous choisi d'intituler ce sixième album Disarm The Descent ? Que signifie
ce titre pour vous ?
Jesse: Au départ, c'est Mike [note: D'Antonio], notre bassiste, qui est venu nous voir avec
ce titre, et nous avons instananément trouvé que c'était une super idée. A la base, c'est
une autre façon de voir la « rédemption », et je pense que c'est un titre tout à fait
approprié pour bien des raisons, et j'ai d'ailleurs utilisé ce titre comme thème de ce
disque.
S: J'imagine que ce nouvel artwork a aussi été créé par Mike, comme il l'avait fait pour les
précédents albums ? Cette pochette est-elle une idée commune que vous avez eue
ensemble, ou est-elle sortie de l'esprit de Mike ? Et que représente-t-elle ?
Jesse: Oui, Mike a en fait eu cette idée, environ une semaine après que j'aie rejoint le
groupe, il est venu me voir et m'a dit « Eh voilà quelques idées, qu'en penses-tu ? Je
voudrais connaître ton avis ! », et j'étais vraiment honoré qu'il veuille m'insérer dans ce
processus. Il avait des photos de cette fille avec une espèce de voile sur elle, posant dans
différentes positions, et je lui ai en fait proposition cette position précise qu'on retrouve sur
la pochette de l'album en prenant une photo de moi dans cette position, avec une main
tendue et l'autre vers l'arrière. Selon moi, la personne sur cette image semble ambigue,
elle semble malveillante, mais c'est aussi une femme, c'est l'image de la mère, et de la
femme aimante, et je voulais qu'elle représente ce mélange, on ne peut donc pas dire si
elle est plutôt séduisante ou meurtrière !

S: Ce nouvel album a été mixé par le producteur vétéran anglais Andy Sneap, qui a bossé
auparavant avec des groupes énormes comme Megadeth, Testament, Exodus, Accept,
Arch Enemy ou encore Nevermore. Pourquoi avoir choisi de parier sur lui cette fois-ci ?
Que penses-tu qu'il ait apporté au groupe et à sa musique ?
Jesse: Nous savions simplement ce que ce gars faisait, et surtout au niveau des sonorités
pour cet album, nous pensions qu'il était l'homme parfait pour ce job, il a vraiment
apporté un nouveau niveau à ce disque. Il est vraiment bon à ce qu'il fait.

S: Sais-tu si les gars de Killswitch Engage ont dû adapté leur méthode d'écriture pour que
leur musique fonctione avec ta voix, en comparaison de ce qu'ils avaient l'habitude de
faire avant le départ d'Howard ? Ont-il travaillé avec les mêmes lignes directrices pour
écrire ces nouveaux morceaux ?
Jesse: Non, parce que l'album était déjà écrit quand j'ai rejoint le groupe, tous les
instrumentaux étaient déjà démotisés et terminés, je pense qu'ils ont seulement composé
un ou deux morceaux après mon arrivée. J'ai donc écouté le matériel et j'ai écrit les lignes
de chant qui fonctionnaient le mieux avec ce qui était déjà écrit.
S: On sait qu'en 2011, tu avais déjà sorti un autre album avec ton pote Adam D., cette foislà pour le groupe Times of Grace ! Penses-tu que ce disque a eu des effets bénéfiques sur
la musique actuelle de Killswitch ? Disarm The Descent aurait-il été aussi bon si vous
n'aviez pas enregistré The Hymn of A Broken Man il y a deux ans ?
Jesse: Ouais, je pense que tout arrive pour une raison précise, et le fait qu'on ait travaillé
ensemble sur cet album n'a certainement pas fait de mal. J'avais passé de très bons
moments à jouer avec Adam et Joel [note: Stroetzel, également guitariste de Killswitch
Engage] dans ce groupe. Ce ne fût donc pas du tout un catalyseur pour que je rejoigne
le groupe, mais le fait que je me sente à l'aise avec eux sur la route et en studio a
sûrement aidé d'une façon ou d'une autre.
S: Comme premier single tiré de ce disque, vous avez choisi la chanson « In Due Time ».
Tout d'abord, penses-tu qu'il s'agisse du meilleur choix pour représenter parfaitement la
musique de Killswitch en 2013 ? Et ensuite, ce single profitera-t-il bientôt d'un clip vidéo ?
Jesse: Le single a été choisi par le label, ils le sentaient vraiment bien avec ce titre,
certainement parce qu'il contient un refrain vraiment bien catchy. Selon moi, ce n'est
clairement pas celui que j'aurais choisi, mais bon... Nous avons effectivement tourné un
clip pour ce morceau, et il devrait être publié la semaine prochaine ! [note: il est

S: Un de mes morceaux préférés (en dehors du brutal « The Turning Point » !) est
probablement « Always », même si c'est un titre très calme. De quoi parle cette chanson ?
Et quelle est son histoire ?
Jesse: Ouais, j'adore aussi ce morceau, et je me suis beaucoup battu pour qu'il soit sur
l'album, parce qu'il y avait beaucoup de discussion à son propos, pour savoir si il collerait
au son de ce disque. En gros, cette chanson parle de se souvenir de quelqu'un qui est
décédé, c'est presqu'une ode à quelqu'un qui a disparu. Mais tu vois, j'adore écrire d'une
telle façon que les gens peuvent se faire leur propre opinion par rapport à mon texte, et
cette chanson a différentes significations, pas seulement une en particulier. Je voulais
vraiment faire quelque chose d'épique, et ce morceau est très sombre et presque
gothique. J'ai pris beaucoup de plaisir à écrire ce texte. C'est en fait un des morceaux qui
a été composé après mon arrivée dans le groupe, Joel l'a écrit et j'ai immédiatement
entendu le refrain dans ma tête ! Je suis très content qu'il soit finalement sur le disque.
S: Je trouve personnellement que cet album est un très bon mélange entre Alive Or Just
Breathing pour son côté violent, et l'album éponyme de 2009 pour son côté mélodique.
Mais comme tout le monde le sait, l'album préféré des fans reste The End of Heartache,
penses-tu donc qu'ils apprécieront ce nouveau disque ? Crois-tu qu'il corresponde
parfaitement aux attentes de votre public ?
Jesse: Je ne sais pas... Personnellement, je n'écris pas en essayant de savoir si les gens
aimeront ou pas, j'essaye juste d'écrire la meilleure musique que je peux, et en écrivant
pour cet album en écoutant la musique qui avait déjà été écrite, j'ai fait du mieux que je
pouvais pour représenter ce que Killswitch était à ce moment-là, tu vois, les gars ont
composé cet album pour qu'il sonne de cette façon, et je voulais simplement y apporter
ma touche personnelle. Je ne pense jamais à comment les gens vont percevoir ce que je
fais, j'espère qu'ils aimeront, évidemment, mais je n'ai pas la science infuse ! Certains
n'aimeront peut-être pas, certains auraient peut-être voulu que ce soit plus mélodique, ou
plus criard et heavy mais... j'ai fait de mon mieux, et je suis content de ce que j'ai fait.

S: Alors que beaucoup de groupes mettent les voiles et quittent le label depuis qu'il a été
racheté par Warner Music, Killswitch Engage a choisi de continuer à travailler avec
Roadrunner Records pour ce nouvel album ! Comment se porte votre collaboration avec
eux ?
Jesse: Ca se passe super bien, en fait ! Les gens qui y sont resté, qui font toujours partie de
Roadrunner Records, sont vraiment passionnés par la musique, et c'est clair que c'est
quelque chose de très difficile pour un label de devoir virer autant de gens en une fois, ca
leur a brisé le coeur. Mais beaucoup de gens qui ont fait la promo de notre album sont en
fait aujourd'hui des indépendants qui bossaient avant chez Roadrunner, et des gens qui
font partie de la famille Killswitch ! Donc derrière cette tragédie, nous avons eu la grande
chance qu'autant de gens décident de nous aider à sortir ce nouvel album et à le
promouvoir, et nous avons pu engager des gens qui avaient perdu leur job, et qui nous
ont aidé avec ce disque en s'associant à Roadrunner !

S: Quand vous avez publié ce premier album de Times of Grace, on t'a souvent entendu
dire que la musique t'avait sauvé la vie. Où en es-tu deux ans plus tard ? As-tu
définitivement retrouvé ta joie de vivre ?
Jesse: Ouais définitivement, mec ! Je suis dans une phase tellement plus positive,
aujourd'hui ! Tu vois, chaque évènement a ses raisons, et passer par toutes ces difficultés a
rendu mes bons moments encore meilleurs ! Après cela, la vie est juste encore plus belle,
et a bien plus de de sens.
S: Vous avez récemment tourné pour célébrer le 10ème anniversaire de l'album Alive Or
Just Breathing, en jouant l'album dans son intégralité ! Penses-tu que vous pourriez faire la
même chose en 2014 pour l'anniversaire de The End of Heartache, alors que tu ne
chantais pas personnellement sur ce disque ?
Jesse: Je pense que je pourrais le faire, mais je ne pense pas que ce soit quelque chose
que nous ferons, je crois que nous avons plutôt envie d'avancer. En fait, c'était surtout une
bonne excuse pour me réintroduire aux fans qui ne me connaissaient pas ou qui ne
connaissaient pas cet album, car cela faisait quand même dix ans ! C'était une bonne
transition pour faire mon retour dans le groupe, et sur la route, et pour faire redécouvrir
nos racines aux gens. Je ne pense donc pas que ça se produira. Nous voulons vraiment
avancer, maintenant.
S: Que va-t-il advenir de Times of Grace ? Puisque tu es de retour dans Killswitch avec ton
pote Adam D., penses-tu que ça aurait encore du sens d'enregistrer un deuxième album
avec cet autre groupe ?
Jesse: Ouais définitivement, tu vois, nous ne sommes plus liés à un label à présent, nous
sommes indépendants, et nous pouvons faire ce que nous voulons de ce projet, et cette
année nous avons parlé de faire un autre album, et nous gardons un oeil là-dessus. Mais
c'est bien sûr plus un side-project, un truc pour le fun, que nous apprécions aussi, mais
Killswitch reste notre groupe principal. Donc oui, nous allons continuer à écrire de la
musique et faire ce dont nous avons envie, car nous le pouvons !
S: Cette question est peut-être bizarre mais... avez-vous eu des nouvelles d'Howard Jones,
dernièrement ? Savez-vous si il compte chanter bientôt dans un nouveau groupe ?
Jesse: Ouais, autant que sache, car je ne le connais pas personnellement, il parait qu'il va
bien, et certaines rumeurs disent qu'il commencerait un nouveau projet musical. Donc
nous verrons bien ce qu'il advient de cela, mais c'est tout ce que je sais.

Beyond The Flames
If I say “Metalcore”, you say? Not Bring Me The Horizon, you little jerk! Go
out!! You say Killswitch Engage, of course! The spearheads of the genre,
coming from Boston, Massachussets, always succeeded in leading the boat
they received right from 2002. However, the surprising departure of the
frontman Howard Jones in 2012 allowed us to doubt about the path of the
band after that. It was without counting on the half-unexpected transfer of
Jesse Leach, who already met again with his mate Adam D. in Times of
Grace one year before. Immediately launched in the journey with an
almost-done instrumental record when he arrived, the original Killswitch
Engage singer was coming back in the band ten years after his departure,
thanks to a bunch of successful tours. In some days now, Disarm The
Descent will see the light of day and will add itself to the American band's
discography, whose new guy accepted to talk to us as a brand new active
and freshly resuscitated line-up member.

Sponge (Rock'N'Balls): First of all, Jesse, it must be something really special for you to once
again promote a Killswitch Engage record, eleven years after the release of Alive or Just
Breathing! How do you live this event?
Jesse Leach: It's great, we're having a really good time. It's kind of a really natural
transition, 'cause I'm really good friends with these guys, so rejoin the band wasn't that
much of a stress for me. I really feel comfortable with them.
S: How is going your current Australian tour?
Jesse: Oh it's awesome, man! We've played two days already, and the fans are great, the
weather is great, today we had a day off, so I actually spent the day at the beach, and it
was awesome, 'cause coming from New York with the snow on the ground... it was pretty
awesome to be able to be on the beach (laughs). Australia's great, people here are really
nice and the fans are amazing!
S: You've already toured a lot with Killswitch Engage since you came back in the band,
and I personaly had the chance to see you live at Graspop Metal Meeting in Belgium last
summer, and the crowd's reactions seemed to be awesome. How did you live this come
back on stage?
Jesse: Yeah it sounded really good, and the crowd was so amazing and very receptive! In
fact, I'm just doing the best I can and try to put a lot of passion into what I do, you know,
even for the songs that I didn't write. I think that when you believe in something and that
you're enjoying yourself, the crowd can feel there's a real genuine love in what you're
doing.
S: Why did you choose to set Disarm The Descent as the title of this upcoming sixth album?
What does this title mean to you?
Jesse: Initially, this is Mike, our bass player, who came up with this title, and we instantly
thought it was great. Basically, it's another way of saying « redemption », and I think it's an
appropriate title for this record for many reasons, and I actually used this title as the theme
of the album.
S: I presume that this new artwork has been created by Mike, as he did for the previous
records? Is this cd cover a common idea you had together with the guys, or did it come
out from Mike's head? And what does it represent?
Jesse: Yeah Mike actually had this idea, approximatively one week after I joined the band,
he came by and said « Hey here are some of my ideas, what do you think? I wanna know
your opinion on it! », and I was just truly honored that he wanted me in that process. He
had some photos of this girl who had like a veil over her, posing in different positions, and I
actually suggested that particular position that made it on the album cover by taking a
photo of myself in that position, with a hand outstretched and one hand back. And to me,
the figure on this cover looks ambiguous, she looks evil but she's also the female, which is a
mother, which is a loving, and I wanted her to be this mixture, so you can't tell if she's
being seductive or murderous!

S: This new record has been mixed by veteran British producer Andy Sneap, who has
previously worked with huge bands like Megadeth, Testament, Exodus, Accept, Arch
Enemy or Nevermore. Why did you choose to bet on this guy this time? What do you think
he brang to the band and to its music?
Jesse: We just knew what this guy is doing, and especially for the tones and sounds of this
record, we thougt he was the right guy for the job, he definitely added a new level to this
album, he's just really good at what he does.

in something and that you're enjoying yourself, the crowd can feel there's a

S: Do you know if the guys in Killswitch Engage had to adapt their writing methods to fit
with your vocals, in comparison with what they used to do with Howard before he left? Did
they work with the same guidelines to write these new tracks?
Jesse: No, because the album was written before I joined the band, all the instrumentals
were pretty much demoed and done, I think maybe they wrote just one or two songs after
I joined. So I heard the material and I wrote the vocals that kinda matched the material
that was already written.
S: We know that in 2011, you released another recprd with your friend Adam D., this time
with the band Times of Grace! Do you think that this album had beneficial effects on
Killswitch's actual music? Would Disarm The Descent have been so good if you didn't
make The Hymn of A Broken Man two years ago?
Jesse: Yeah, I think that everything happens for a reason, and it definitely doesn't hurt the
fact that we worked together on this record, in fact I had a really good time playing with
Adam and Joel in that band. So it definitely wasn't a catalyst for me rejoining the band,
but it surely helped in a way, as far as being comfortable with these guys on the road and
in the studio.
S: As the first single of this new disc, you chose the song "In Due Time". First of all, do you
personaly think it's the best song to represent Killswitch's present music? And then, will
there soon be a video filmed for this single?
Jesse: The single was chosen by the label, they really felt strong about that one, of course
because it has a really catchy chorus. To me, it's definitely not the one that I would have
chosen, but yeah... we shot a video for it, and it should be released in the next week or so!

S: One of my personal favorite song on this record (excepting the brutal « The Turning
Point »!) is probably « Always », even if it's a very calm one. What does this song talk
about? What's its story?
Jesse: Yeah I actually really love that song too, and I fought a lot for it to be the record,
'cause there was a lot of discussions of whether or not it was appropriate sonically for this
record. Roughly, the song is about remembering someone who has died, it's almost like an
ode to somebody who passed away. But you know, I like to write in such a way where

people can draw their own conclusions, and that song has different meanings, not just
one in particular. I really wanted to put out something that was epic, and it's also almost a
kinda dark and gothic sounding song. I really enjoyed writing this track. That was actually
one of the songs that's been written after a rejoined the band, Joel wrote it and I
immediataly heard the chorus in my head. I'm really happy that it's on the record.
S: I personaly think that this new record is a very good mix between Alive Or Just Breathing
for its violent side, and 2009's Killswitch Engage record for the melodic side. But as
everybody knows that the fans favorite Killswitch album of all time stays The End of
Heartache, do you think that they will love this new disc? Do you think that it perfectly
matches to what the fans are expecting from the band?
Jesse: I don't know... Personaly I don't write thinking if people will love it or not, I just try to
write the best music that I can write, and writting for this album by listening to the music
that was already written, I just did the best I could to represent what I thought Killswitch
was with that record, you know, these guys wrote this record purposely to sound this way,
and I wanted to bring it to the table with my style so... it's not really in the back of my mind
how people are gonna perceive it, I hope they'll like it, of course, but I can't pretend to
know! Some people may not like it, some people may wanted it to be more melodic, or
more screaming and heavy but... I wrote the best I could, and I'm happy with what I did.

S: As a lot of bands are leaving the boat since the label has been bought by Warner
Music, Killswitch Engage keeps working with Roadrunner Records for this new release! How
is this collaboration going between you and them?
Jesse: It's actually been pretty amazing! The people who stayed behind, who are still part
of Roadrunner Records, are really passionate about the music, and I think it's a unique
thing for a label to sort of lay off so many people, it was a really heartbreaking thing at
that time. But a lot of the people who used to promote that record are freelance people
who used to work for Roadrunner, and people who are part of the Killswitch family! So
behind this tragedy, we had a great chance that so many people helped us to released
this record and to promote it, and we've been able to hire some of those people who
have lost their job, and who helped us with this album in association with Roadrunner!
S: When you released this first Times of Grace record, we've often heard you saying that
this music saved your life. So, how are you doing after two more years? Did you definitely
find back your joy of life?
Jesse: Yeah definitely, man! I'm in a much different place right now! You know, everything
happens for a reason, and going throught these difficult times just made my good times
even better. After that, life is just more beautiful, and has a lot more sense.

S: You've recently toured to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Alive Or Just Breathing,
performing the album in full! Do you think you could do the same thing in 2014 for The End
of Heartache's anniversary, as you were not personaly singing on this one?
Jesse: I think I'd be able to do this, but I don't think that's something we would do, I think
we're just moving forward. In fact, it was such a good excuse to kinda reintroduce me to
the fans who may not know me and may not know that record, 'cause it's been ten years!
It was a good transition to get me back in the band, and back on the road, and to
reintroduce people to the roots of the band. So I don't think it's something that it will be
happening again. We really want to move forward now.
S: What will now happen of Times of Grace? As you're back in Killswitch with your friend
Adam D., do you think it still could have sense to release another record together with this
other band?
Jesse: Yeah definitely, you know, we're not attached to a record label anymore, we are
free agents, we can do whatever we want with that project, and over the past year we
talked about definitely doing another record and keep on eye going. But obviously it's
more of a side-project you know, something for fun, something that we enjoy but Killswitch
is our main band. So we're gonna still keep writing music and just kinda do what we want
with it, because we can!
S: Maybe this one is a little bit weird but... do you guys in the band still have some news
about Howard Jones? Do you know if he's gonna sing in an other band soon?
Jesse: Yeah, as far as I know, 'cause I mean I don't know him personaly, he's doing ok and
there are rumors that he's starting a new musical project, so we'll see what happens with
that, but that's as far as I know about him.
« A lot of the people who used to promote that record are freelance people
who used to work for Roadrunner, and people who are part of the Killswitch
family! So behind this tragedy, we had a great chance that so many people
helped us to released this record and to promote it, and we've been able to
hire some of those people who have lost their job, and who helped us with
this album in association with Roadrunner! » (Jesse Leach)
S: Well, thanks a lot for this interview, Jesse! We are all very impatient to welcome Killswitch
Engage in Belgium once again! Do you just have a last word for your fans and our readers
here in Belgium and everywhere else?
Jesse: Yeah I would say just THANK YOU, I have gratitude from the bottom of my heart for
all the people being so welcoming, to help me come back and just supporting Killswitch
over the years! And I look forward to get back in Belgium as well, 'cause you guys have
awesome beers!!
