PREVIEW : OLYMPIQUE DE MARSEILLE - PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN
Olympique de Marseille - Paris Saint-Germain Feature Preview
Olympique de Marseille and Paris Saint-Germain meet at the Stade Vélodrome on Sunday with their Classique encounter bubbling
over with promise.
With OM third, two points behind Paris, who led the table coming into the weekend, the game on the Mediterranean coast has even
more riding on it than usual. While the visitors will be seeking to inch themselves towards a third successive Ligue 1 title, OM are not
only attempting to maintain their own ambitions of winning the league for the first time since 2010, but also of keeping themselves
ahead of fourth-placed AS Monaco, who are making a late charge for the podium.
"For me, the title is more than possible. We're in great form right now. Our next game is against Paris, we're two points behind and so
if we win, we go ahead of them. The title is within reach. We need to keep playing as we are doing and have a little luck too," said
OM's Lucas Ocampos, who moved along the south coast from Monaco in January.
"For me, all the matches starting from the one against Paris will be finals. And not just for me, but for the whole team, because every
team that plays us, Paris or Lyon gives absolutely everything. So they'll be finals. We'll have to play them as we usually do and show
a lot of heart."
Marseille have done that in recent weeks, bouncing back from a patchy run of form to go unbeaten in their last three league outings recording two wins and ten goals in total to sandwich a goalless home draw with fellow title contenders Olympique Lyonnais - while
they have lost just once in their last eight L1 outings.
Their momentum risks being halted by Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who has proven unstoppable for club and country in recent weeks. The
Sweden captain contributed three goals and an assist in two internationals during the break, and has scored eight times - and chipped
in with two assists ? in his last six league games.
"I don't get too focussed on the opponent, and try to play every game in the same way, though it's true that when my opponent is
bigger than me, I play a little differently," said OM defender Jérémy Morel, who will be tasked with stopping PSG's towering superstar
striker after making a successful move from left-back to central defence under Marcelo Bielsa this season.
"I'm not going to stick close to him, because otherwise you won't see me behind him. I'm going to have to be more cunning than him.
What makes things more difficult against big teams is that there are a lot of big individuals, you can't just focus on one player. It'll be a
good test to know whether we are equipped to go all the way."
Ibrahimovic took his tally to 17 for the league campaign with a hat-trick in the 3-1 Week 30 win over FC Lorient as Paris ended the
weekend top of the table for the first time this season following Lyon's defeat at home to OGC Nice.
A second successive victory at the Vélodrome would help cement that position, but Paris boss and former Marseille defender Laurent
Blanc is fully aware the Classique is a 90 minutes like no other.

Week 31
Olympique de Marseille - Paris Saint-Germain
"The environment of this game is a bit special in comparison to that of other games. It gives some depth to the game, some spice. It
also gives the media a chance to write and comment on things," Blanc told PSG TV.
"There's a sort of supremacy that is played out, but in the end, the match brings you three points, just like the others. It's an interesting
and pleasant match to play for several reasons, but above all to try and please our fans."
Olympique de Marseille - Paris Saint-Germain
- HISTORY: Olympique de Marseille have won 22 of their 36 Ligue 1 home games against Paris Saint-Germain, who have triumphed
only seven times at the Stade Vélodrome.
- Prior to last season's win in Marseille, Paris had picked up all three points just once in nine previous league trips (3D 5L) there (2-4
on 26 October, 2008).
- Paris are unbeaten on their last two visits to the Stade Vélodrome for a L1 game (1W1D) - OM's last victory in the Classique came
with their 3-0 victory in November 2011. Of the three goalscorers that day, only André Ayew remains at the club (Loïc Rémy and
Morgan Amalfitano got the other goals).
- LAST SEASON: Paris registered a 2-1 win in Week 9. Thiago Motta was sent off (31') after giving away a penalty that Ayew scored
(34') to put OM ahead. However, Maxwell levelled in the dying seconds of the first half before Zlatan Ibrahimovic (66' pen.) struck
from the spot. Maxwell (50') was again on the scoresheet and Edinson Cavani also found the net (79') as Paris won the Week 27
match-up at the Parc des Princes 2-0.
- THIS SEASON: Paris won the duo's Week 13 meeting 2-0. Lucas (38') and Cavani (85') got the goals.
- OLD BOYS: Paris defender Zoumana Camara made 42 Ligue 1 appearances for OM between summer 2000 and his January 2002
departure for RC Lens, scoring just a single goal.
- Paris coach Laurent Blanc played for Marseille between 1997 and 1999, leaving the club after their UEFA Cup final defeat to Parma.
- OLYMPIQUE DE MARSEILLE
- GENERAL: Marseille come into Week 30 in third place in Ligue 1 with 57 points, two points behind leaders Paris and a single
marker adrift of second-placed Olympique Lyonnais. They are four points clear of AS Monaco, who have a game in hand. They have
won 17, drawn six and lost seven of their games to date.
- Marcelo Bielsa's side dropped as low as 15th after failing to win either of their opening two games but were top of the table from
Week 6 until losing at Montpellier Hérault SC in their opening league fixture of 2015, after which they dropped back to second.
- In their last outing, Marseille romped to a 4-0 win away to RC Lens. Michy Batshuayi (46', 90+3') scored twice with Alaixys Romao
(67') and Ayew (72') getting the other goals.
- OM team v Lens (4-2-3-1): Mandanda; Dja Djedje (Lemina 52'), Fanni, Aloé, Mendy; Romao, Imbula; Thauvin (Ocampos 79'), Payet,
Ayew; Gignac (Batshuayi 46')
- OM have lost just one of their last eight league games - the 3-2 home loss to SM Caen in Week 27 - though they have won just three
times in that run.
- They are unbeaten in their last three league outings (2W 1D).
- Goalkeeper Steve Mandanda has appeared in 182 consecutive Ligue 1 matches since missing the final day of the 2009-10 season
due to suspension.
- Before losing 1-0 at Lyon in Week 11, they recorded eight consecutive Ligue 1 wins to equal the previous club record, set between
January and April 1937 and again from September to November 1998.

Week 31
Olympique de Marseille - Paris Saint-Germain
- The last time they won eight in a row, their run was ended in a 2-1 defeat at Lyon, on 19 November, 1998.
- OM have scored 60 goals in 30 games so far this season, the highest tally in the division. They have scored three goals or more on
nine separate occasions, including in a 5-0 win at Stade de Reims (Wk 7) and their 6-1 triumph at Toulouse FC in Week 28. They
have failed to score at all in just five games, managing only the one point in the 0-0 draw with OL in Week 29 in that time.
- Gignac is their leading scorer with 16 league goals and 18 in all competitions. Coming into the weekend, only Lyon's Alexandre
Lacazette (23) and Paris' Ibrahimovic (17) had scored more L1 goals this season. Batshuayi has eight while Ayew has seven and
Payet six.
- Payet has provided 11 assists, the most in Ligue 1, three more than the next-best, AS Saint-Etienne's Romain Hamouma. Benjamin
Mendy has four while Romain Alessandrini and Florian Thauvin have both laid on three goals.
- Marcelo Bielsa's side have conceded 31 goals, with only six clubs conceding fewer so far. They have kept nine clean sheets, while
the 3-3 draw at SC Bastia in Week 1 and their Week 27 loss at home to SM Caen (2-3) are the only games in which they have
conceded more than twice. The clean sheet against Lyon in Week 29 was their first since the 1-0 home win over
Evian-Thonon-Gaillard FC in Week 23.
- Mandanda and Giannelli Imbula have started all 30 Ligue 1 games this season, while Gignac has appeared 30 times, losing his
place in the starting XI for the first time for the Caen game in Week 27.
- Alaixys Romao (v Lens, Wk 12), Rod Fanni (v Guingamp, Wk 21), Mario Lemina (v Rennes, Wk 24) and Jérémy Morel (v OL, Wk
29) are the only Marseille players to have been sent off in Ligue 1 this season. Imbula was sent off in the 2-0 defeat at PSG in Week
13 but later had the red card rescinded.
- HOME FORM: OM have won 11, drawn twice and lost twice in 15 home games this season, taking 35 points from a possible 45.
Only Lyon and Paris (37 points) could boast better home records coming into the weekend.
- Marseille's win against ETG in Week 23 was their 11th in a row at home in Ligue 1, their best run at home since a streak of 14
straight wins from November 1947 to September 1948. The run began with a 4-0 defeat of OGC Nice in late August, and ended with
the 2-2 draw against Stade de Reims in Week 26.
- Bielsa's side have scored 30 goals and conceded 13 at the Stade Vélodrome this season.
- Only OL (33) and Paris (34) have found the net more times in front of their own fans.
- They had just the seventh-best home record in Ligue 1 last season, with 10 wins, three draws and six defeats, and 33 points, from
19 games.
- Gignac has a team-high eight home goals.
- After taking the lead at home this season, OM's record is: 10W 0D 1L. After conceding the opening goal, their record reads: 1W 1D
1L.
- Marseille's average attendance this season is 51,142, the highest in Ligue 1 and significantly up on last season's average of 38,129.
Only 41,413 watched them beat Nice in Week 4 but the crowd of 62,832 v Lyon in Week 29 was a new stadium record.
- COUPE DE FRANCE: Marseille suffered a humiliating exit in the round of 64 at the hands of fourth-tier Grenoble Foot 38, losing 5-4
on penalties after a tie that ended 3-3 after extra time.
- COUPE DE LA LIGUE: The three-time winners were eliminated at the first hurdle in October, losing 2-1 to Stade Rennais FC at the
Stade de la Route de Lorient in the round of 32.
- JANUARY TRANSFERS IN: Lucas Ocampos (AS Monaco, loan).
- OUT: Doria (Sao Paulo, BRA, loan)
- TEAM NEWS: Nicolas Nkoulou (knee) is back in training after a knee problem, while Jérémy Morel returns from suspension
following his red card against Lyon. Abdelaziz Barrada (adductors) is sidelined.

Week 31
Olympique de Marseille - Paris Saint-Germain
- GENERAL: Paris come into this weekend in first place in the Ligue 1 table with 59 points from 30 games. They have won 16, drawn
11 and lost three of their games to date and are two points behind leaders Olympique Lyonnais.
- Laurent Blanc's side had not been higher than second after a matchday this season until Week 30. However, they had been
permanent members of the top four since a 2-0 win at Caen on September 24 (Wk 7).
- This time last season, PSG were top with 73 points, ten points clear of AS Monaco in second. At the same stage in 2012-13, they
were also top with 61 points, seven points ahead of Marseille in second.
- Their current points tally is their lowest at this stage of a season since 2010-11, when they had 49 points and lay fifth, nine points
behind leaders and eventual champions LOSC Lille.
- Last weekend, Laurent Blanc's side won 3-1 at home to FC Lorient. Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored a hat-trick (4' pen., 82' pen., 90+2')
with Jordan Ayew scoring for the visitors (67').
- The Paris line-up against Lorient (4-3-3): Sirigu; Van der Wiel, Silva (c), Thiago Motta, Maxwell; Matuidi, Verratti, Pastore; Lavezzi
(Rabiot 64'), Ibrahimovic, Cavani.
- Javier Pastore started for the 100th time in a Ligue 1 game in the Week 29 defeat at Girondins de Bordeaux (3-2).
- That defeat ended a run of eight Ligue 1 games without loss for PSG (5 wins, 3 draws) and a run of 15 matches without losing in all
competitions.
- PSG have scored 55 goals so far this season, a figure bettered only by Lyon (57) and Marseille (60). They have scored three goals
or more on eight separate occasions this season, including in their 5-0 demolition of Saint-Étienne in Week 4. They have failed to
score at all in four games.
- Zlatan Ibrahimovic is their leading scorer with 17 Ligue 1 goals, including eight in his last six (plus two assists) followed by Edinson
Cavani with eight and Lucas with seven.
- Ibrahimovic has 23 goals in all competitions, while Cavani has 18 and Lucas has eight.
- Ibrahimovic has scored seven of his 17 Ligue 1 goals this season from the penalty spot. He has scored from open play in just six
games.
- Javier Pastore has provided six assists this season - only three L1 players have laid on more goals for their team - while Marco
Verratti has set up goals. Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Lucas and Jean-Christophe Bahebeck have each laid on three goals.
- Ibrahimovic finished Ligue 1 top scorer for the second successive season last season with 26 goals, four fewer than his previous
campaign in France. Team-mate Cavani was the top flight's joint-second top scorer with 16 goals.
- Ibrahimovic scored 41 goals in all competitions last season, beating Carlos Bianchi's previous club record of 39 goals in one
campaign, set in 1978. Cavani netted 25 altogether and Ezequiel Lavezzi got 12 goals in total.
- Ibrahimovic provided 11 assists last season, a tally bettered only by AS Monaco's James Rodríguez (12).
- PSG's total of 84 goals scored last season was the highest of any Ligue 1 team - Monaco, who had the second-highest tally, scored
63.
- Paris have conceded 28 goals thus far this season. Four sides - AS Monaco (21), Lyon (22) and Saint-Étienne (both 24) and LOSC
Lille (26) - have let in fewer.
- They have kept 11 clean sheets so far. The Week 29 3-2 loss in Bordeaux was only the second time this season that they have
conceded more than twice in a game. Their 4-2 defeat at Bastia in January was the first time they had let in four goals in a game
since a 4-4 draw at Lyon in February 2012.
- Before going to Bordeaux, Salvatore Sirigu had not conceded three goals in one Ligue 1 game since a 3-2 defeat at FC
Sochaux-Montbéliard in February 2013. Nicolas Douchez played in the January defeat in Bastia.
- PSG conceded a league-low 23 goals in total last season, three fewer than LOSC Lille, who had the second-best defensive record.
- No Paris player has appeared in every league game this season. However, goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu has started 29 of the 30

Girondins de Bordeaux (3-2, Wk 29).
- Paris have won just once in seven away league games since the start of December. They had gone 11 away Ligue 1 games without

Olympique de Marseille
- Founded in 1899, Marseille have been crowned Ligue 1 champions nine times (1937, '48, '71, '72, '89, '90, '91, '92, 2010) - second
only to Saint-Etienne, who have ten L1 titles. OM also have a record ten Coupes de France (1924, '26, '27, '35, '38, '43, '69, '72, '76
and '89) and a record-equalling (with PSG and Bordeaux) three Coupes de la Ligue (2010, '11, '12).
- Marseille are the only French club to have won the Champions League (1993), Basile Boli scoring the only goal of a 1-0 win over AC
Milan. OM were runners-up in 1991, losing 5-3 on penalties (0-0 a.e.t.) to Red Star Belgrade, as well as reaching the final of the
UEFA CUP in 1999 and 2004.

Week 31
Olympique de Marseille - Paris Saint-Germain
- OM's home stadium is the Stade Vélodrome. Recently finished renovations - in preparation for hosting matches in Euro 2016 - have
seen capacity rise from 48,000 to 67,000.
- Coach Marcelo Bielsa replaced former club sporting director José Anigo on May 27, 2014. Argentine Bielsa has also coached
Newell's Old Boys, Argentina, Chile and athletic Bilbao, whom he took to the Europa League and Copa del Rey finals in 2012.
- OM finished sixth last season, 28 points behind champions PSG. They failed to progress from the group stage of the Champions
League last season, losing every match. OM crashed out of the Coupe de la Ligue with a 2-1 quarters loss in Lyon and were on the
wrong end of a nine-goal thriller against Nice in the Coupe de France's last 32.
- OM were stripped of the Ligue 1 title in 1993, after being found guilty of match-fixing.
- Notable former OM players include Franck Ribéry, Chris Waddle, Jean-Pierre Papin, Didier Drogba, Fabien Barthez, Laurent Blanc,
Alen Boksic, Jean Tigana, Eric Cantona, Didier Deschamps, Robert Pirès, Samir Nasri and Enzo Francescoli.
Paris Saint-Germain
- Promoted to Ligue 1 in their present guise in 1974, PSG are in their 41st consecutive top-flight season.
- PSG's 2013-14 title triumph was their fourth (1986, '94 and 2013). They have won eight Coupes de France (1982, '83, '93, '95, '98,
2004, '06 and '10), and four Coupes de la Ligue (1995, '98, 2008 and '14).
- PSG became only the second French club to win a European trophy when they beat Rapid Vienna to the 1996 UEFA Cup Winners
Cup' title with a 1-0 win in Brussels. PSG lost the 1996 UEFA Super Cup final to Juventus, and the 1997 Cup Winners' Cup final to
Barcelona.
- PSG play at the 48,712-seat Parc des Princes. The ground is being refurbished for Euro 2016.
- Laurent Blanc was named coach in June 2013 to replace Real Madrid-bound Carlo Ancelotti. A World Cup winner as a player, Blanc
won Ligue 1 and the Coupe de la Ligue during three years at Bordeaux before taking France to the quarter-finals of Euro 2012. He
won the treble of Ligue 1, Coupe de la Ligue and Trophée des Champions in his first season and extended his contract to 2016 in
May.
- PSG have been owned by Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) since May 2011, when they bought a controlling 70 percent stake from
American group Colony Capital, becoming the sole shareholder in March 2012. Nasser Al-Khelaifi is club president.
- Zlatan Ibrahimovic top-scored in Ligue 1 in 2013-14 with 28 goals. His 30 goal haul in 2012-13 made him the first player since
Olympique de Marseille's Jean-Pierre Papin in 1989-90 to score 30 in a single season.
- PSG broke the French transfer record in July 2013, paying a reported 64 million euros for Napoli's Edinson Cavani.
