Introduction to Provence
We’re glad to present to you this guide to
the Côtes de Provence rosé wines and to
show you why imported dry rosé – with a
sales growth rate of 28% – is one of the
fastest-growing retail wine segments in the
U.S. We hope this booklet will help you
select which wines will appeal the most to
your clients and help you find them in the
market.
Roque Pertusa
President, Provence Wine Council
If you have questions about the Côtes de
Provence region, rosé, or any of our
participating domaines, please use the
contact information on the back cover to
follow up with us.
About Côtes de Provence
Provence is the world’s only region
specializing in dry rosé. The vast majority of
its rosés come from the Côtes de Provence
AOC, the largest and best-known
François Millo
Director, Provence Wine Council
winemaking appellation in Provence. Côtes
de Provence stretches from the alpine hills
of the north to Saint-Tropez on the southern coast, and extends west to Aix-en
-Provence. It encompasses several winegrowing areas, each with geographical
features that give the wines distinct personalities. Côtes de Provence
vineyards also yield full-bodied reds and delicate whites.
3
About Rosé Wine
Rosé is a category of wine that stands alongside
red and white. Like red wines, rosés are made
from red grapes. But whereas red wines are
made by allowing the juice and skins to
commingle during fermentation, rosé producers
allow only a limited period of skin contact before
separating the pink-tinted juice from the grape
skins and then beginning fermentation. The
pigment and tannins in the skins give the dry
rosé its color, aroma, and character.
Provençal winemakers make rosé by producing single-variety rosés in
individual vats. The final cuvée is assembled from these batches. The most
common grapes used are Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah, Mourvedre, Tibouren,
Carignan, and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Quick facts:
» Approximately 10% of the world’s wine production is rosé.
» France produces 28% of the world’s rosé wine by volume, making it the
global leader.
» Provence produces 40% of French AOC rosés. The AOC designation is a
guarantee of authenticity and production quality.
» In France, vin rosé outsells white wine. In the United States, rosé is one of
the fastest-growing wine categories in retail.
Market Information
Rosé is experiencing a global rebirth. In the United States, retail sales of
imported rosé increased by 28% in the year ending Sept. 19, 2009. By
comparison, total table wine sales grew by less than 4% (The Nielsen Co.).
Projections show this trend continuing. According to a Vinexpo study, U.S.
consumption of rosé wine is forecast to rise by nearly 10%, from 565 million
bottles in 2008 to 620 million bottles in 2012. American wine drinkers are
discarding the misperception that rosé wines are the same as sweet blush
wines, which contain much higher levels of residual sugar.
Overall, the U.S. is now the world’s second largest importer of wine. From 1999
to 2007, the volume of wine imported into the U.S. doubled, and the U.S. wine
market grew to more than $30 billion in sales.

APPELLATION: Côtes de Provence
VINTAGE: 2008

GRAPE VARIETIES: Grenache, Rolle
SUGGESTED RETAIL PRICE: $34.99

LABEL: Pink Floyd (Bio)
APPELLATION: Côtes de Provence
VINTAGE: 2009
TYPE: Rosé
GRAPE VARIETIES: Cinsault, Grenache
SUGGESTED RETAIL PRICE: $26.00
TECHNICAL NOTES: Château Miraval Pink Floyd rosé is a blend of
Cinsault (80% from old vines) and Grenache. Fine and delicate, this
rosé is perfect as an aperitif or as an accompaniment to
Mediterranean and grilled foods. The name Pink Floyd has a direct
connection with the domaine, as the rock band used the recording studio on the
property to record “The Wall” 30 years ago. We thought it a fitting name for a pink
rosé. Vinification includes a long cold fermentation.

SUGGESTED RETAIL PRICE: $19.99
TECHNICAL NOTES: With its grapes harvested at night, this cuvée,
which is made with the traditional saignée (bleeding) method,
benefits from skin maceration at a low temperature for a few hours. The varietals are
vinified separately at temperatures not exceeding 59°-61°F, after the must has

SUGGESTED RETAIL PRICE: $15.00
TECHNICAL NOTES: Fouquette’s Rosée d'Aurore, named for the
Daziano's young daughter, is a cuvée blended especially for JW

accented with Rolle (called Vermentino in Italy and other Southern France
appellations), which adds citrus aromatics, crisp acidity and a touch of minerality to
its red counterparts.
Vinification: All fruit is destemmed. The rosé is made entirely from direct pneumatic

LABEL: Rimauresq Cru Rosé
APPELLATION: Côtes de Provence
VINTAGE: 2009
TYPE: Rosé
GRAPE VARIETIES: Grenache, Cinsault, Tibouren
SUGGESTED RETAIL PRICE: $24.99
TECHNICAL NOTES: This rosé has a superb aromatic subtlety, with
mineral and floral attributes. Complements a range of foods. Best
served at 54°F.
The grapes are harvested in the early morning to benefit from low nighttime
temperatures. The bunches are crushed and destemmed, and then undergo cold
maceration on their skins for several hours. The grapes are then pressed, and the free
run juice is separated. A period of cold stabilization follows, prior to fermentation at a
low temperature (with no malolactic fermentation). After fermentation, the wines are
left on their lees with regular batonnage, to improve the aromas. The wines are
filtered prior to bottling.

La Commanderie de Peyrassol
P EY R AS SO L CH Â T E AU RO S É
LABEL: Peyrassol Château Rosé
APPELLATION: Côtes de Provence
VINTAGE: 2009
TYPE: Rosé
GRAPE VARITIES: Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah
SUGGESTED RETAIL PRICE: $25.00
TECHNICAL NOTES: A wine whose color is like that of a rosebud
blossoming in the morning dew with the glint of pale violet. An
aroma and flavor of berries and fruit, more especially of deeply
ripened strawberries and raspberries, peach, and apricot. On the
palate: hearty, refreshing, delicate, elegant, and subtle. Its maturity points to a
greater roundness, associating a peppery hint of the unexplored to the intensity of
its fruity taste.
