Garo Avessian – Biography
Garo Avessian, conductor
Born in Beirut in 1979, Mr. Avessian studied piano from 1992 – 2000, as well as
composition, harmony, theory and orchestration in Beirut. At Yerevan State
Conservatory in Armenia (named after Gomidas), he studied composition with
Ashautte Zohrabian from 2001 - 2006 and conducting with Aram Gharabekian
from 2003 – 2007 and earned a Masters Degree in both subjects.
His Honors include Third Prize in the Lazarus Saryan Vocal Competition in
Yerevan 2004, for “Three Kuchak Hayren”. In 2005, he received the Presidential
Award for the recognition as the healthiest person in Armenia, subsequently
appeared as a gifted actor in Gor Vardanian’s Film “Destiny”. More recently, he
was a finalist in the Film Music Category of the Young Composers’ Competition
of the Narekatsi Art Institute in Yerevan 2006 for “Embers of the Sun” (imposed
film).
In 2008 he was assigned by Dr. Walid Gholmieh to conduct the Lebanese
Philharmonic Orchestra. His debut with LPO in October 2008 received an
overwhelming critical acclaim from the audience and press.
Garo Avessian is an Associate Professor at the Lebanese National Higher
Conservatory of Music since 2008; he is also the Artistic Director and Conductor
of the Armenian Evangelical ARMISS Choir since September 2008.
He is the founder and the principal conductor of the Ganachian College
Chamber Orchestra since August 2009 and a part-time lecturer at Beirut Arab
University since 2010. Garo Avessian is a member of The Professional Musicians
Syndicate in Lebanon since 2011.
In April 2012, he was selected to participate at George Pehlivanian’s Conducting
Master Class and concert in Le Touquet – France. In collaboration with
Australian Embassy in February 2013, Garo Avessian conducted the Lebanese
Philharmonic Orchestra collaborating with international flautist Ana De La Vega

playing the Myslivecek Flute Concerto in Beirut for the second time in the
history after its premier in London.
Most recently, Avessian was selected to participate in another Conducting
Masterclass, this time by Donald Schleicher (Professor at Illinois State
University) and Russell Miller (Professor at Eastman School of Music) in January
2014 in Chicago.
