Costa Cruises
Savona & Costa Cruises:
successfull alliance
a
Savona – April 3, 2012 – Costa Cruises, the largest Italian
travel group and Europe’s no. 1 cruise company, has
strengthened its ties with Savona and confirmed its local port
expansion plans. According to forecasts there will be
approximately 900,000 cruisers and 220 calls at the Savona
Palacrociere cruise terminal in 2012, figures in line with the
record numbers clocked up in 2011.
The continuity and growth of the alliance between Costa
Cruises and the town of Savona was reiterated earlier today at
Palazzo Lamba Doria in Savona at a meeting between Costa
Crociere President Gianni Onorato, the Mayor of Savona
Federico Berruti, Savona Chamber of Commerce President Luciano
Pasquale, and Savona- Vado Ligure Port Authority Chairman Rino
Canavese.
Costa Cruises has confirmed its plans to double the capacity
of the Palacrociere, the cruise terminal that the Italian
Company has been running directly since 2003. Building work is
set to commence on the second passenger terminal at the end of
May this year, with an investment by Costa worth around 9
million euros.
The tender process for the project was completed on February
10, 2012 and the contractor will be formally appointed at the
end of April once all the necessary procedures have been
carried out. The building site will operate for about 15
months and the new satellite terminal is expected to open its
doors for business at the end of August 2013, in time for next
year’s peak cruise season in Savona.
The professional firms behind the design of the new facility
are all Ligurian: Studio Vicini Architetti (architects Luigi
Vicini and Andrea Piazza), who also contributed to the designs
of the original Palacrociere and the Barcelona “Palacruceros”;
Studio Tecnico Ingg. Montaldo e Canale; and C.V.D. Progetti
Srl. The second Savona terminal will cover a total area of
3,500 m2. It will be a satellite terminal, functionally
connected to the existing Palacrociere, so that it can use its
services, but also able to operate as a free-standing facility
with its own waiting, transit and baggage handling areas.
The Palacrociere looms large in Costa’s program of cruise
vacations for Easter 2012. In the last two weeks, Costa
Cruises has recorded booking volumes for its 2012 Easter
cruises exceeding the corresponding figures for its Easter
cruises in 2011. The Company has 5 of its fleet members
operating in the Mediterranean for this Easter, all departing
from the Savona Palacrociere: the Costa neoRomantica, which
left on March 31 on a 9-day Western Mediterranean cruise
(Savona, Marseilles, Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, Cagliari,
Malta, Catania, Naples); the Costa Deliziosa, sailing on April
6 on a 5-day mini-cruise (Savona, Barcelona, Palma de
Mallorca, Ajaccio); the Costa Serena, leaving on April 8 on a
one week Western Mediterranean itinerary (Savona,
Civitavecchia, Palermo, Palma de Mallorca, Valencia,
Marseilles); the Costa Pacifica, with departure on April 8,
and the Costa Mediterranea, with departure on April 4, on an
11-day cruise to Greece, Israel and Turkey.
Among the most popular recent innovations this season in the
Mediterranean are the mini-cruises of Costa Luminosa, Costa
Atlantica and Costa Deliziosa, sailing from the Savona
Palacrociere, introduced on the market for spring 2012 (from
April to June) and autumn 2012 (from September to November)
and especially suited to first time cruisers and people who
want to make the most of a getaway vacation but only have
limited time available.
The following Costa ships will be operating out of the
Palacrociere during the forthcoming summer season: the Costa
Serena, with a new 7-day itinerary dedicated to trendy beaches
and fun, including an overnight stay in Ibiza; the Costa
Magica, on one-week Western Mediterranean cruises; and the
Costa Mediterranea, on 10- to 13-day cruises to Morocco &
Portugal, the Black Sea and Greece, Israel and Turkey.
A red-letter day is scheduled for September 19, 2012, when the
Costa neoRomantica, the result of the radical refurbishment of
the Costa Romantica carried out at the San Giorgio del Porto
shipyard
in Genoa, will depart from the Palacrociere on the Grand
Cruise from Italy to Australia and New Zealand, via the finest
and most fascinating places in the eastern hemisphere.Comune
di Savona
The presence of Costa’s ships generates an According to a
study conducted by MIP, the Milan Polytechnic Business School,
Costa Cruises generated more than 5.5 million euros of direct
economic impact in the Port of Savona in 2010 and almost 230
million euros in Liguria as a whole, the latter figure largely
accounted for by work carried out on the ships in the fleet.
Costa’s liners began calling at Savona in November 1996 with
the arrival of the Costa Riviera, the first Italian cruise
ship to dock there. The alliance between Costa Cruises and the
town has flourished ever since – one of the key stepping
stones was the inauguration of the Palacrociere passenger
terminal, which Costa co-financed with an approximately 3.6
million euro investment, opened on November 24, 2003.
Conceived by the Catalan architect Ricardo Bofill, the
Palacrociere was specially designed and built to provide
hospitality for cruise Guests, guaranteeing them high quality
services. Thanks to its innovative architecture the terminal
is able to reduce waiting time to a minimum, while combining
the utmost comfort with maximum security. The Savona
Palacrociere received from RINA the B.E.S.T. 4 (Business
Excellence Sustainable Task), which is an integrated voluntary
scheme certifying corporate compliance with the highest
international standards in the areas of Social Accountability,
Environment, Safety and Quality.

Costa Concordia defueling
operations
concludes
successfully
“caretaking”
operations commence
A multi-million euros total investment to remove the oil from
the ship.
Giglio Island – March 22, 2012 – Costa Crociere, the
Municipality of Giglio Island and the Costa Concordia
Emergency Commissioner’s Office have announced that the
operations to remove the fuel from the Costa Concordia are
going to be completed.
Defueling, which was carried out by experts from the Neri/Smit
Salvage team hired by Costa Crociere, began at 5 pm on
February 12 and continued around the clock whenever the sea
and weather conditions were favorable.
The removal of the oil from 17 tanks of the ship will be
completed within Friday night march 23. Operations have been
performed using a system of pumps and valves. Basically, “hot
tap” valves were attached to the side of the ship, a hole was
drilled into the tank and a pipeline was attached. This
enabled the oil to be heated and pumped out while sea water
was pumped in so as to maintain the ship’s stability. Minimal
physiological amounts of fuel cannot be pumped out from the
bulkheads of the tanks; but they are in such small quantities
as to pose no significant environmental risk.
“After the tragic incident involving the Costa Concordia,”
said Costa Crociere S.p.A. President Gianni Onorato, “we took
immediate action in order to guarantee the least possible
environmental impact and protect the environment of Giglio and
the island’s economy and tourism industry, working
productively and in full cooperation with the Emergency
Commissioner’s Office and the Municipality of Giglio. We
appointed the world’s leading salvage company to carry out the
defueling operation, and this has been done successfully,
preventing a potential ecological disaster. We are very
pleased with this result, and we will continue to work with
the same commitment during the next stages of the salvage
mission; no effort will be spared until all the necessary
operations are completed. The reliability and expertise of our
Company are shown by the professionalism with which we manage
projects like this one. I wish to reiterate that the Costa
Concordia incident was a one-off freak event, extremely
serious but unrepeatable, and I wish to express our
condolences to the families of the victims and our closeness
to all the people who suffered because of this incident.”
“We have observed and monitored the total commitment of all
the parties involved in the efforts to prevent even the
slightest environmental impact on the island and today we can
see that our optimism was not misplaced,” commented the Mayor
of Giglio Sergio Ortelli. “The fact that the various
operations and measures have been jointly agreed and
implemented has enabled us to achieve what is a great result
for the future of Giglio Island. We cannot forget the tragedy
that occurred here and our thoughts are continuously with the
families of the people who died or are missing. At the same
time, the efficiency and effectiveness of the response to the
emergency, combined with the fact that the daily analysis
conducted by ARPAT and ISRA has confirmed that our waters are
still crystalline, means that we can now look to the future
with greater peace of mind. We are confident that the next
stage of the salvage operation, which will be more complex,
will be handled with the same team spirit that has emerged to
date and that this will lead to the same positive result that
is our common goal. I wish to thank the inhabitants of Giglio,
who, at such a difficult time, have shown a tremendous sense
of responsibility.”
Now that the oil has been successfully pumped out of the
tanks, and ahead of finalization of the wreck removal plan,
attention is now focusing on the so-called “caretaking”
operations. The intention is to guarantee environmental
monitoring and protection with the assistance of
experts using dedicated means and resources, and to clean up
the seabed and the area around the hull. “Caretaking” will be
conducted once again by Neri/Smit Salvage technical staff
appointed by Costa Crociere and will last one or two months.
Costa Crociere made a multi-million euros investment for
defueling operations, with the primary focus on removing the
oil from the ship as quickly and cleanly as possible.
As already announced, as far as concerns removal of the ship,
the six working plans submitted by the March 3 deadline are
currently being evaluated. A shortlist is being drawn up and
the best plan will be selected and announced in early to midApril.
All the plans submitted are of a very high standard and all
prioritize the need to minimize the environmental impact,
protect Giglio’s economy and tourism industry, and guarantee
safety.
The operation to remove the wreck will be a particularly
complex one and is expected to take from 10 to 12 months,
depending on which tender is chosen.

dining experience to complement Crystal’s upscale Nobu
specialty restaurant. Under the direction of Malaysian chef

2012 World Cruise in January.
In development for more than a year and a half, Crystal’s food

Chinese cuisine.

Website
Feature
on
SAN ANTONIO, January, 2012 – New for 2012, France Cruises introduces a
new feature that allows passengers and journalists to share their trip
reports detailing their experiences aboard any cruise from the company’s
extensive collection. These firsthand accounts will be displayed on the
France Cruises website to provide prospective passengers with an
objective and detailed review of the journeys along the waterways of
France and beyond.
“A trip report presents valuable insights into the cruising experience no
description can ever depict,” President Jean-Francois Dabrowski said.
“Travelers truly enjoy reading these informative and honest perspectives
to help them better plan their future travels, and even allow them to
live vicariously through their adventures.”
More than a simple testimony or review, the trip reports describe the
cruise in thorough detail from day one until the end of the trip, and
typically features photographs of interesting elements throughout the
journey.
A
trip
report
on
the
beautifully-appointed
hotel
barge Caroline in Southern France was most recently published on the
website, which gave a detailed account of the trip between Beziers and
Carcassonne along the famed Canal du Midi. The report included an array
of advantages such as advice on what to do before and after the cruise;
insight on traditional local dishes; and identification of remarkable
sights in the region all from the eyes of the traveler rather than the
operator. More importantly, trip reports from cruisers who experienced
other France Cruises packages in the past provide a helpful comparison of
two different vessels and trips.
Clients are encouraged to submit their trip reports and photos by email
at [email protected] for publication.
