BACKGROUND:
An only-child born to Ray and Kathy Hawrysh, Cassie was raised in the “Wheat City”:
Brandon, Man.. A French immersion student from K-12, Cassie went on to graduate
from the University of Regina - School of Journalism in 2007 with her BA in Journalism
(w/ distinction).
Athletically, Cassie is a former national volleyball and track & field athlete – turned
Skeletor.
After one season as a varsity volleyball player for the University of Windsor Lancers
(Windsor, Ont.) she transferred to the west and perused a career in track and field,
competing as a heptathlete and relay team member for the University of Regina
Cougars where she would be named a 4X All-Canadian and team captain in her senior
year. Cassie ran for two more years competitively after university (focusing solely on
400m Hurdles).
A spur of the moment move to Calgary in 2009 launched her skeleton career and
Cassie spent the first few months just convincing herself that sliding head-first at
140km/h + wasn’t a crazy idea. As it turns out, it is crazy – but nothing makes her
happier and it somehow feels entirely natural.
PARCOURS DANS LE SPORT :
Enfant unique de Ray et Kathy Hawrysh, Cassie a passé son enfance dans la «Ville du
blé», Brandon, Man. Étudiante d'immersion française pendant tout le primaire et le
secondaire, Cassie a complété un diplôme de journalisme avec mention très bien, à
l'Université de Regina, Faculté de journalisme, en 2007.
Sur le plan du sport, Cassie est ancienne joueuse de volleyball et compétitrice en

athlétisme de niveau national, devenue skeletoneuse d'élite.
Après une saison de volleyball chez les Lancers de l'Université de Windsor (Windsor,
Ont.), elle est partie dans l'ouest pour se lancer dans l'athlétisme, concourant en
heptathlon et aux relais pour les Cougars de l'Université de Regina, où elle était à
quatre reprises étoile canadienne, et chef d'équipe durant son année senior. Cassie a
continué à courir compétitivement pendant deux ans après avoir terminé ses études (se
consacrant uniquement aux haies de 400m).
Un peu à l'improviste, elle a déménagé à Calgary en 2009 et sa carrière de
skeletoneuse se voyait partie: Cassie a passé les premiers quelques mois à se
convaincre que le fait de glisser la tête en avant, sur une piste de glace, à une vitesse
de 140km/h + n'était pas de la pure folie. Or, effectivement, c'est fou, mais rien ne la
rend aussi heureuse, et d'une certaine perspective, la glisse est devenue une seconde
nature pour Cassie.
