Winegrowing regions are divided into four climate zones based on growing degree days. There is lot of cultivars, autochthonous as well as international ones, grown in Croatia. According to experience based on long history of cultivation for each climate zone appropriate cultivars has been recommended and traditionally grown for wine production. In the last decade, together with other World winegrowing regions, we witnessed some climate changes in Croatia, too. Climate data shows that overall in last ten years temperature of growing seasons have increased, especially in Continental winegrowing region, where in comparison with long term average, every growing season was warmer and most of them classified as “extremely hot”. Temperature changes have caused alteration in phenology of vines, influencing especially process of grape ripening. As a result of warmer or even very hot ripening period analytical data shows tendency towards changing of wine styles and most obvious being increasing of wines alcohol content. Because of that reason varieties that have previously made excellent wines in some area may be found lees suitable and the others for which temperature has been to low, can now be grown safely and give good results. Together with adaptation of cultural practices in grape growing and wine making, the possibility of adaptation on observed climate changes can be found in a careful redefinition of cultivars suitable for each winegrowing area. In Croatia, there are so far a few examples of successful spreading of cultivars from warmer to cooler climate zones. One of them is Plavac mali, late ripening cultivar that was used to be recommended only for warmest sub-region (Middle and South Dalmatia), but today is spreading out of this area, giving good production characteristics even in northern sub regions of Dalmatia.
