8e Salon International Photo-phylles - 2015
Nous avons reçu 1 874 photos en 2014 et 2 386
cette année (+ 27 %). La participation féminine
représente plus du tiers des auteurs, une
proportion apparemment bien plus forte que
dans d'autres Salons internationaux.
We received 1 874 photos in 2014 and 2 386
this year (+ 27 %). The feminine participation
represents more than one third of the authors, a
proportion apparently stronger than in other International Salons.
Les sections A et B ont reçu respectivement
1 188 et 1 198 photos, ce qui a équilibré les
charges des deux jurys.
The sections A and B received respectively
1 188 and 1 198 photos, what balanced the tasks
of both juries.
Comme chaque année, de nombreux auteurs ont
présenté des photos hors thème ; fidèle à mes
habitudes, je leur ai demandé de revoir leurs
envois ; plus de 200 photos ont été ainsi
remplacées ou supprimées.
As every year, numerous authors presented photos off theme; faithful to my habits, I asked
them to revise their entries; more than 200 photos were so replaced or deleted.
Malgré la définition donnée par la Fédération
Internationale de l'Art Photographique (FIAP),
la notion de « milieu naturel » varie
notablement d'un pays à l'autre. Plus
récemment, la définition de la photographie de
nature donnée par la Fédération Photographique
de France (FPF) s'est écartée de celle de la
FIAP, sacrifiant à mon avis l'éthique au profit de
l'esthétique.
In spite of the definition given by the
International Federation of the Photographic Art
( FIAP), the notion of "natural environment"
varies strikingly from a country to another one.
More recently, the definition of the photography
of nature given by the Photographic Federation
of France ( FPF) moved away of that of the
FIAP, sacrificing in my opinion the ethics for
the benefit of the esthetics.
En français, on appelle « végétaux » un groupe
hétérogène d'être vivants dont les cellules ont
des parois formées de cellulose, comme les
plantes à fleurs, les fougères, les mousses, les
algues... Il n'existe aucun terme anglais équivalent, du moins dans le langage courant, pour
désigner globalement cet ensemble.
In French, we call "végétaux" a heterogeneous
group of living beeings the cells of which have
walls formed by cellulose, as flowering plants,
ferns, mosses, seaweeds... There is no equivalent English term, at least in the ordinary language, to indicate globally this set.
Tout ceci a semé le trouble et rendu assez floue
la frontière entre les deux sections ; j'ai souvent
suggéré aux auteurs de déplacer quelques photos
de l'une vers l'autre quand c'était possible mais
j'ai aussi demandé aux juges de ne pas
sanctionner quelques dizaines d'œuvres
malencontreusement égarées.
All this provoked some confusion and made
blurred the border between both sections; I often
suggested to the authors to move some photos
from one section to the other when it was
possible but I also asked to the judges not to
punish any tens of works inconveniently misled.
Photos admises, photos exposées...

Les salles du Jardin Botanique de Bordeaux ne
permettent pas d'exposer dans de bonnes
conditions plus de150 photos mais conformément aux usages nous déclarons « admises » de
20 à 25 % des photos reçues ; cette année c'est
25 % dans chacune des sections, près de 600 en
tout, seule une photo admise sur quatre sera
donc exposée. Dans les plus grands salons internationaux c'est bien pire : 80 000 reçues ou parfois plus, 20 000 admises, 400 exposées !
The rooms of the Botanical garden of Bordeaux
do not allow to expose in good conditions more
de150 photos but in accordance with custom we
declare "accepted" from 20 to 25 % of the
received photos; this year it is 25 % in each of
the sections, about 600 in everything, only one
photo accepted on four will thus be exposed. In
the biggest international Salons it's much worse:
80,000 received or sometimes more, 20,000
admitted, 400 exposed!
Les photos étant jugées individuellement, deux
erreurs classiques diminuent encore la probabilité d'avoir des photos exposées :
- Suivre la mode. L'an dernier, nous avons
reçu des centaines de coquelicots, de roses et de
photos floues ; cette année ce sont des gouttes
d'eau et des insectes en vol autour des fleurs.
Sur 200 photos d'un même sujet à la mode, 50
seront peut-être admises... et 2 ou 3 exposées.
- Présenter des photos semblables. Elles
seront déjà comparées entre elles avant d'être
comparées à celles des autres concurrents, une
seule au mieux sera exposée. De plus, leur
auteur donne au jury l'impression qu'il ne sait
pas choisir dans sa propre production.
Photos being individually judged, two classic
errors still decrease the probability of getting
exposed photos:
- Follow the fashion. Last year, we received
hundreds of poppies, roses and blurred photos;
this year lots of drops of water and insects in
flight around flowers. On 200 photos of the
same fashionable subject, perhaps 50 will be
accepted... and 2 or 3 exposed.
- Present similar photos. They will be already
compared between them before being compared
with those of the other competitors, only one at
best will be exposed. Furthermore, their author
gives to the jury the impression that he does not
know how to choose in his own production.
Conclusion : ne vous occupez pas trop de ce que
font les autres, n'essayez pas de les imiter, faites
ce que vous aimez et pas ce que vous croyez que
le jury va aimer, enfin composez toujours des
envois aussi diversifiés que possible.
Conclusion: do not take care too much of what
the others make, do not try to imitate them,
make what you like and not what you believe
that the jury is going to like, finally always
compose entries as diversified as possible.
Préparation des photos :
Preparation of photos:
Les photos ont été présentées aux juges sur un
écran plat de grandes dimensions et de haute définition. Elles ont toutes été redimensionnées en
fonction de cet écran et munies d'un liséré
double formé de 2 pixels noirs côté intérieur et 2
pixels gris clair côté extérieur.
Photos were presented to the judges on a flat
screen of big size and high definition. They
were all resized according to this screen and
provided with a double border formed by 2
black pixels inside and 2 light gray pixels
outside.
Elles ont ensuite été réparties en une vingtaine
de catégories pour faciliter les comparaisons :
gros plans de fleurs, paysages naturels, arbres,
champignons, mousses et lichens, natures
mortes, travaux des champs, etc. On évite ainsi
de concentrer les bonnes notes sur quelques
types de photos, au détriment des autres.
They were then distributed in about twenty categories to facilitate the comparisons: close-up of
flowers, natural landscapes, trees, mushrooms,
mosses and lichens, still lives, works in the
fields, etc. We so avoid concentrating good
marks on some kinds of photos, to the detriment
of the others.

3 : photo moyenne, exposition éventuelle.

Je demande systématiquement aux juges d'attribuer un 4 ou un 5 à environ un quart des photos,
de façon que leurs notes soient étalées de façon
semblable et qu'aucun d'eux ne prenne une influence prépondérante sur les autres.
I ask systematically to the judges to attribute
one 4 or one 5 to approximately a quarter of
photos, so that their marks are spread in a
similar way and so that none of them takes a
dominating influence on the others.
Les photographies des jeunes participants ont
été notées en même temps que les autres, sans
être signalées au jury. Elles ont ensuite reçu un
bonus de 1 point pour la catégorie 16-20 ans et
de deux points pour la catégorie 11-15 ans. Il n'y
avait aucun jeune de moins de 11 ans.
The photos of the young participants were noted
at the same time as the others, without being indicated to the jury. They then received a bonus
of 1 point for the category 16-20 years and of
two points for the category 11-15 years. There
was no young person of less than 11 years.
Les photos de la section A ont été jugées autant
que possible en respectant la définition de la
photographie de nature, selon la FIAP : l'intérêt
du sujet doit passer avant l'esthétique. Presque
toutes les photos étaient d'un niveau technique
correct et montraient des sujets bien identifiables, d'où des notes plutôt élevées, avec un
niveau d'admission à 12.
The photos of the section A were judged as far
as possible by respecting the definition of the
nature photography, according to the FIAP: the
interest of the subject has to pass before the esthetics. Almost all the photos were of a correct
technical level and showed very recognizable
subjects, the marks were rather high, with a
level of admission in 12.
Pour la section B, ce sont plutôt les aspects artistiques qui ont prévalu, en tenant compte évidemment du respect du thème. Les écarts de
notes ont été plus importants, notamment en
raison du caractère beaucoup plus subjectif des
critères d'évaluation. Les notes ont été
globalement plus basses, d'où un niveau d'admission à 11.
For the section B, it is rather the artistic aspects
which prevailed, by obviously taking into
account the respect for the theme. The range of
the marks was more important, in particular due
to the much more subjective character of the
criteria of evaluation. The marks were globally
lower, with a level of admission in 11.
Pour les deux sections, j'ai invité les juges à
faire très attention aux photographies représentant à la fois un animal et une plante et à modérer leurs notes lorsque la plante ne jouait dans
l'image qu'un rôle secondaire. Ils ont plutôt bien
respecté cette consigne, en sachant faire preuve
de discernement ; il est clair en effet que si une
vache est en train de brouter de l'herbe, ces deux
éléments sont intimement liés par les lois de la

An excellent idea!
J'ai noté également qu'au fil des années, le Salon
Photo-phylles fait de plus en plus partie du programme des photographes amoureux des plantes
et des champignons. Désormais, beaucoup
d'entre eux le préparent tout au long de l'année,
ce qui est une excellente idée, et cela se voit très
nettement tant au niveau de leur production que
de leurs résultats.
I also noted that over the years, the Salon Photophylles is more and more included in the
program of the photographers who are in love
with plants and mushrooms. From now on, a lot
of them prepare it all year long, what is an
excellent idea, and it can be seen both at the
level of their production and of their results.
