Introduction:
You will by now be very familiar with the topics covered throughout
the CE Syllabus – you will have seen them many times over your time
studying French.
This revision guide will help you find the relevant pages in your Letts
GCSE Revision guide to help you with your revision.
Remember that there are “topic” and “grammar” sections; however,
wherever possible you should look to use the grammar that you have
been taught in every topic. Do this by learning example sentences that
“show off”. This will help you to write and speak more advanced level
French, getting you those extra marks that make the difference.
Learning a few set sentences is a sure fire way to make sure you get
the best mark possible, you can learn to adapt these sentences for
other situations too.
This revision guide will be split into three sections – Topics, Grammar
and Useful Things.
Take your time to go through it, tick it off as you do a subject, but
remember that you will need to revisit each topic several times before
you have properly completed it!

Look, say, cover, write, check.
Learn this French words as you would your English spellings. Use the 5 steps below to learn how to spell
any word.
1. LOOK – Look carefully at the word for at least 10 seconds.
2. SAY – Say the word to yourself or out loud to practise pronunciations.
3. COVER – Cover up the word when you feel that you have learned it.
4. WRITE – Write the word from memory.
5. CHECK – Check the word against the original. Did you get it right? If not, what did you get wrong?
Spend time learning that bit of the word again. Try again until you get it right.
Cognates
Cognates are words that look similar in French and in English. Try to use these cognates to help you revise
– but be careful with spellings! Sometimes there are little differences for example: Afrique
Africa
Colour coding
Use pink and blue crayons to colour in masculine and feminine words.
Please note:

(m) indicates a masculine noun

(f) indicates a feminine noun

(m/f) indicates a noun that can be either masculine or feminine

(pl) indicates a plural noun

* indicates an irregular verb

§ indicates an adjective that comes before a noun

Future tense with Aller:
Aller + INFINITIVE (e.g. jouer, parler, manger)
Je vais – I’m going (to......)
Tu vas – You’re going (to.......)
Il / elle va – He / she is going (to …..)
Nous allons – we’re going (to.......)
Vous allez – You’re going (to......)
Ils / elles vont – They ‘re going (to......)

Imperfect tense (things that happened in the past over a period of time/ things you used
to do)
To form the Imperfect we take the NOUS form of the PRESENT TENSE, and take off the –ONS to get
the Imperfect stem.
To this stem we add the endings as follows:
je

ils ....................... aient
There are (of course !) exceptions to the rule. Here are few of the most commonly used:

The endings for the imperfect tense are always the same.
Verbs like manger add an extra -e before -a, -o, -u. Nous mangeons becomes:
je mangeais
tu mangeais
il/elle/on mangeait
nous mangions
vous mangiez
ils/elles mangeaient
With verbs like commencer, the last -c becomes -ç before -a, -o, -u. Nous commençons:

a. Too few – you can’t get a C.

Thou shalt use conjunctions to LINK sentences.
(Et, mais, parce que, car, ou, puis, ensuite…)

Thou shalt use subordinate clauses. (Don’t panic – this just means clauses which
can’t stand on their own.)
a. Je mange à la cantine, parce que les repas sont bons.
b. Pendant la récré je joue au ou je lis des livres.
5.
Thou shalt express opinions. Lots. All different.
6.
Thou shalt use adverbs.
(lentement, poliment, vite etc.)
7.
Thou shalt use negatives.
