Acknowledgments
These four years in Groningen have been extremely rich for me. Now that this Thesis arrives
at its end, I have many people to thank for having made my stay and my work here so lively.
I first would like to thank Xander Tielens, my promotor, for making me come here, and
then for all the time and the trust he gave me. It was always motivating to work with you
Xander, our meetings were always rich in ideas, jokes and laughs. You always found the
right words to make me fight again and again and be happy with my work. I learned a lot
through you, not only scientifically, but also in the way to be a researcher. This is something
very precious that I will keep. My other companion in this Thesis experiment is Marco
Spaans. I have been so lucky to have you as co-promotor. You were always here for me,
turning in circles in your office, ready to listen and to find solutions. I really enjoyed to work
with you, to see you estimating something, with your finger in the wind, and that after days
of simulations, this would be the result.. Xander and Marco, thank so much to both of you. I
really hope that we will work together in the future, and that I will have the pleasure to see
you in Florence!!
I would also like to thank the members of my reading committee, Ewine,Thijs and Bob,
who gave me some very constructive comments about my work, and improved the quality of
this manuscript.
I also would like to thank my French collaborators for the research we did together. It
was really nice to spend few months with you, to talk to you, and to enter into this field which
I knew nothing about. I enjoyed a lot to work and discuss with you Cecilia. Your enthusiasm
for astronomy is unbelievable! And it is of course contagious!! Alain, j’ai vraiment apprécié
ton accueil à Bordeaux. C’etait un plaisir de venir diner chez toi, en bonne compagnie et
entourés de bonnes bouteilles! Valentine, tu m’as beaucoup appris, et je ne suis pas prète
d’oublier nos observations au 30m!! J’ai vraiment découvert une amie, et j’éspère que dans
le futur nous aurons plus d’occasions de nous retrouver. Sébastien, j’ai vraiment apprécié nos
rencontres, à Toulouse comme à Groningen. Je sais que la campagne de la Hollande du nord
est un peu gloque, mais tu es le bienvenu à Florence pour te changer tes idées post thèsardes!!
Je voulais aussi remercier tout le petit monde de WAGOS pour nos rencontres trés vivantes,
et nos discussions interminables! J’ai beaucoup appris parmi vous.
Je voulais aussi remercier Jacques le Bourlot pour le travail que nous avons commencé
ensemble et que j’éspère reprendre au plus vite. Travailler avec toi est une expérience très
enrichissante. Moi qui ne sait pas écrire quelques lignes de programme sans que cela devienne
illisible, je suis bien contente de ton influence!! Je ne savais pas que la programmation pouvait
être un art!!

Je dois aussi beaucoup à Jean Louis Masnou et Nicolas Epchtein. Jean Louis, tu as
toujours été là pour me conseiller, quand les décisions devenaient difficiles à prendre! C’est
aussi grace à toi que je me suis retrouvée à Groningen! Nicolas, je n’oublierai pas mon stage
de DEA avec toi et DENIS. Tu m’as beaucoup appris et accordé beaucoup de temps et de
confiance.
Of course, this Thesis would not have been an happy thesis without some of you, here in
Groningen. Four years ago, when I arrived in Groningen, I shared a flat with two fabulous
persons, Mercedes and Jeronimo. I have been so lucky to arrive just in the right place, the
place were I felt home really fast. I will always remember watching a movie with both of
you with not listening to half of it because of all the stupid comments we kept on doing!
You two really masterise in destroying the most romantic scenes of Hollywood!! I have
loved to live with both of you!! Mercedes, we did so much together, I was very sad when
you left few month ago. You made my life so much easier here, these evenings when we
covered the balcony of cigarette buts. I am glad to live close to you soon again!! My life
here has been quickly filled with more people that I consider like my family. Can I put a
chronological order?? I guess it starts with you Omar. Et oui le cours de Hollandais a tout de
même servi à quelque chose, te rencontrer. Tu as vraiment pris la place de mon grand frère,
et j’adore comme tu es toujours toi, en n’importe laquelle des circonstances. Vivement nos
prochaines figures acrobatiques en boite de nuit!! Ensuite c’est toi IGOR que j’ai rencontré
au Boven Jan. Nous avons passé tellement de temps ensemble à arpenter les rues noires de
Groningen. J’ai tellement aimé ta compagnie, ta façon de danser comme si on faisait un
spéctacle, ta façon de ne jamais être fatigué, et bien sûr tes histoires de princesse Hongroise!
Tu me suprends toujours, toi et tes refugiés politiques qui dorment dans ta chambre, toi et
tes racines et bourgeons, toi Igor au grand coeur! J’éspere que la zététique te comblera!!!
Puis c’est toi ma Caroline qui est arrivée dans ma vie et j’ai vite compris que tu me serais
indispensable! Tu as remplis ma vie Groningoise de tant de choses. A tes côtés, j’ai appris à
mieux comprendre les gens, à mieux les écouter, mais je n’ai jamais reussi à devenir comme
toi, un absorbeur de conflits!! Quand tu es la, le monde deviendrait-il plus sage? Merci de
m’avoir emmenée dans tes mondes féeriques, ceux que tu partages avec Anais, et de tous
ces moments dans ta petite famille, avec Berto et Anais, où je me sentais vraiment chez moi.
Merci aussi de m’avoir fait essayer ta drogue: le Tango!! I think that the next person of my
Groningen family that I met is Thomas. Thomas, of course you come here! This is the logical
order.. I am so happy you wanted to dance tango. I met two persons in one. One great tango
partner and also a great friend. I find your comments on life so funny and so surprising. I
am going to miss our tango nights, but I really hope you will find a way to come to dance in
Italy sometimes (I will take care that you will have no spherical food!!). Filippo, I know you
could have lived without your name in my acknowledgments!! I apologise but you are such
a great friend to me that I have to speak about you! I really enjoyed our evenings out, our
conversations that would extend the time. We were always surprise to figure out that it was
ALREADY 4am!! Time is flying! And I will never forget the Fraternalli Travel. The best
host in the world, organising the visit of Bologna/Firenze/Venice in 2 days!! I hope to visit
Oxford soon, and to hear you British accent!! Un autre membre de ma famille Groningoise,
que je tiens à remercier est monsieur David. David, ton arrivée ici a été ressentie comme un
bombardement! D’un coup les bars de Groningen avaient un GOGO danseur et devenaient
riche!! Tu as remplis ma dérnière année passée ici de tant de moments magiques! Ces petites
soirées au shadrak, la pauvrure du matin, les diners 5 étoiles (chez toi evidemment!!).. Tu

as une capacité à écouter les autres qui n’a pas de fin!! Merci pour ton cautching, pour les
capuchs du SRON, merci d’être là et d’être toi!! Annique, je t’ai gardée à la fin de la famille
Groningoise car il n’y a pas d’ordre chronologique pour toi! C’est comme si tu avais toujours
été dans ma vie, tu fais bien partie de la nuit de mes temps. Bordeaux, Nice, La Hollande, je
sais que tout cela est loin d’être un hasard!!! Je crois que l’on a bien reussi le pari de ne pas
se quitter pendant toutes ces années! Je te dois tellement, tu as remplie ma vie de tellement
de souvenirs, toi, mon inséparable louttre! Le prochain voyage est sans toi, mais je n’ai pas
dit mon dernier mot!! N’oublies pas notre bar à Marseille!

gehad!! Mijn Nederlands is nu echt better dankzijl jullie! Edwin en Woeneke, ik ben zo blij
dat ik jullie ontmoet heb! Ik vind jammer dat ik kan niet alle Haikus begrepen, Edwine, maar
dat kom wel!! Woeneke, Ik hoop dat je ooit de crokodile zal vangen! Het was een echt leuk
dans! Ik will ook de “Overgrown supershit” badanken voor de echt leuk avond in de Shadrak.
Toch david?? Ik will ook Martijn bedanken. Je ben een echt aardig huisgenoot, and als ik
laat thuis komt en zie de licht aan, ben ik echt blij om een leuk avond met je te hebben!! Mijn
woning experiment met twe Nederlanders is zo leuk!! Ik will ook je bedanken, Margeet, om
een zo leuke vriendine te zijn!!
This fours years of Thesis in the Kapteyn have been also very easy because of the ambiance that my colleges brought in this place. There were always nice persons to drag me to
lunch, or to have a coffee with, or to come and discuss in my office. The last few month of
my Thesis, I was really pleased to talk to you Hansy. Try to plan our defense party together
to make this French-Germain alcohol contest.. You help me a lot with all the things of the
thesis! Henrick, monsieur cuillère, it was very good to have you around in the lab and to
exchange our problems/happiness! I also would like to thank Michiel for his help.. It is so
nice when the people who just went through the thesis fight come to give you advices. Other
than the frustrated people finishing their PHD, I had lots of contact with some kapteyners,
which made my everyday life so much nicer!! Isabel a les yeux bleux!! I am so happy I
met you. I enjoyed so much our climbing sessions, our drinking sessions, our long long conversations. Thank you for your friendship!! Nissim, I loved your company in the late lab,
with lots of pizza and your amazing stories. Peter, you were really part of my lab-life and
it was great to have you. I liked your singing performances a lot. Hope to hear you again
soon! Jelte and Neil, the coffee breakers, such nice moments stolen from work! Giuseppina,
thank you for the precious things you taught me in Italian. Rien, it was really nice to meet
you. I love our never-finishing conversations. I hope to have some more before Florence! Of
course they are so many other kapteyn people that I would like to thank, but it would take so
long!! So please forgive me for being brief but I would like to thank all of you who made my
days: Marco, my officemate, Jaquie, Jocelin, Pablo, Olito, Philippe, Emilio, Adriaan, Miguel,
Rense, Hugo, Kambizzzz, Wilfred, Katia, Amina, Benne, Bruno, Katarina, Edo, Nasser, Neil,

those who help me to stay calm in front of my computer: my precious buurman, Wim! And
of course Martin, Kor and Eite, who were of great help in all these years! I was also so happy
to find the help of Hennie, Jacquie, Greta and Gineke when I was lost in the middle of papers, and of Georg when I was lost in the library!!! I am very grateful to NOVA for funding
my PHD research, and to the Kapteyn Institute, LKBF fonds and the University Library for
financing the printing of this thesis.

hebben me zo makkelijk geaccepterd. Toen ik niet zo goed Nederlands kon pratten, maar
jullie hebben me nooit uitgesloten. Met jullie, voel ik meself in mijn Familie. Ik hop dat
jullie vaak ons zullen bezoeken in Italie.
J’arrive à present à ma petite famille française! Je ne sais pas ce que je serais devenue si
vous n’aviez pas cru en moi. Même après cette brillante année de sciences économiques, où
je fus recalée haut la main, vous avez continué à croire (où faire semblant mais de façon très
convainquante) que je serais un jour dans les étoiles. Evidemment, je pense particulièremnt
à toi petite mère, qui m’a toujours soutenue et qui m’a fait comprendre qu’il n’y avait pas de
rèves irréalisables. Tu as accompli tellement de choses dont je suis fière, toi qui as compris
comment être heureuse avec peu, toi qui respire la joie de vivre, je n’aurais jamais pu mieux
tomber! Evidemment, je pense aussi à toi JB. Toi qui es tant pour moi, toi qui rêves en
grimpant, toi qui touche le ciel de tes chaussons, je suis vraiment heureuse de t’avoir comme
frère. Merci à tous les deux d’être autant.
Il y a aussi mamie, toi qui me raconte toutes les nouveautés du ciel que tu aperçois depuis
la fenêtre électrique de ton donjon, quand tu ne dors pas la nuit. Tu es vraiment un amour
de petite femme, et je suis bien contente d’aller visiter ton enfance bientôt!! Je voudrais
remercier toute ma famille d’avoir été là pour moi. Papa, c’est bien toi qui m’a initiée à
l’astronomie, quand j’etais petite!! Même si nos observations nétaient pas fructueuses, tu
m’en as bien donné le gout!! Mamie germaine et Pierrot la lune, j’ai tellement aimé nos
diners à Bordeaux et vos histoires. Vous m’avez vraiment manqué ces dernières années!!
Tonton serge et claudine, mes parents adoptifs! Tant de vacances ensemble, de radio bidou,
de mercredi aprés midi, toute mon enfance est pleine de vous!!
Je voudrais aussi remercier mes amis de toujours d’avoir été présents dans les moments
difficiles, et de faire partie de ma vie où que je sois. Je pense évidemment à virginie et
dorothée, qui ont fondé le CDK et qui ont toujours été présentes dans ma vie! Il y a aussi
toi, petite cousine, qui est toujours à mes côtés, qui part à l’autre bout du monde pour me
retrouver, qui se soucie toujours de ce qui m’arrive, qui illumine nos retrouvailles de ses
danses indiennes, mon amie de toujours, ma précieuse! Et bien sur toi, petite anne, perdue
dans les andes. Tes histoires de louttres-lottes, ton monde imaginaire, ta façon de me lire des
histoires, et d’être mon amie sont tant de choses qui me rendent tellement solide. Et puis toi
ma caroline, charmante voisine de la rue Perey. Tu es devenue une amie si indispensable, et
tu me manques si souvent! Sans vous tous, chers piliers de ma vie, je me serais sentie très
petite bien souvent!!
I want this thesis to end with your name, Ramon, because you made so much of it! You
listened to my doubts, you guided me, helped me, cheered me, anytime I needed it. You are
a wizard that makes everyday life another story, another adventure, another world.
