Anatomy Domine EP

Décrit par le NME comme le pourvoyeur d’une electronica pop riche et inspirée,
Sourya a réussi à conserver son indépendance artistique face à la florissante scène
indé française.
Après s’être rencontrés fortuitement dans un train au retour d’un concert londonien
de Radiohead, les 4 membres de Sourya forment le groupe fin 2005 avec Julien aux
machines et aux programmations, Arnaud à la batterie, Rudy aux claviers et à la
basse et bien sûr le leader charismatique «Sou» au chant et aux guitares ainsi qu'à
la Nintendo DS en live .
Quelques mois plus tard, ils font leurs premières armes au fameux bar parisien le
Shebeen. Imperméables à l’émergence de leurs congénères rock néo-garages, ces
quatre musiciens autodidactes et originaires de la banlieue parisienne, se distinguent
par l’utilisation d’instruments électroniques.
Leur premier single «Lovesong Ep» sort sur le feu label Coming Soon. La chanson
«Numéro 1» devient alors un hymne sur Radio Nova (compile Nova Tunes 1.4).
C’est alors qu’ils font la rencontre du producteur Jean-Paul Gonnod, collaborateur de
Phoenix, Cassius et Readymade FC. Son association avec Sourya va au-delà de la
simple prise de son, l’approche même des chansons en a été bouleversée.
Producteur de l'album, Jean Paul Gonnod est le partenaire privilégié du groupe,
devenant par la suite l’homme de l’ombre, tant en live qu’en studio.
«Dawdlewalk», le premier album, est un manifeste explosif, un mix éclectique
d’atmosphères. De l’hymne néo-disco «Stockholm 1973» à l’écorché vif «Numéro 2»,
du croisement magique de Brian Wilson et Happy Mondays d’«Anatomy Domine » à
l’hypnotique «Sleepstage Zéro», «Dawdlewalk» fait partie de ces grands disques qui
nous fait espérer quant au futur de la pop music, comme «Screamadelica» de Primal
Scream ou «Kid A» de Radiohead.
En concert, avec son set électro, pop dance jouissif, Sourya continue son ascension
irréversible tant son savoir-faire et sa force de frappe éclaboussent le visage de la
culture indie en une jouissante déflagration organique, aussi sensuelle que robotique.
L’aura du groupe a déjà franchi la Manche, et pour cause, Alan Mcgee (Creation
Records, Oasis, Glasvegas) déclare dans le quotidien The Guardian : ''Frontman

« For me, Sourya's forthcoming single, Anatomy Domine, is heavily reminiscent of the early
Esteban and Zilkha production of Garcons' French Boy. That track is proto-Hot Chip genius:
Esteban and Zilkha took Garcons' post-punk sound and applied beats and a frantic disco
vibe to make a club classic.
Going electro has worked for Sourya and their profile has picked up – they're being remixed
by (and are remixing) all the up-and-coming acts in Paris (check out Disco Dawn Boys' remix
of Anatomy Domine – Warp already have an eye on them). Sourya are also working with
Diplo and Santogold and their debut album is being prepared with producer Jean-Paul
Gonnod (Phoenix, Cassius, Dr Dre). It should be a fresh revelation of energy from the kids
on the streets of Paris: Brian Wilson melodies, heavy beats, soulful strings and post-punk

Hello, what’s goin’ on in Sourya’s world right now?
Our new single is out these days. It’s called Anatomy Domine, and we have been told that it
was the perfect synthesis between daft punk and brian wilson.
You should buy it right now. so that one day you will be able to say “yeah they suck now. but
seriously there first records were not that bad”…
We are also moving forward, writing new songs, and trying to improve our production
techniques. writing joyful songs with very dark lyrics is our daily job.

How is the scene in Paris at the moment? Any good new bands to look after?
Someone said that the parisian scene acted like a prism…from which side? rainbow to white
or white turning into rainbow?
Seriously, The Agency is brilliant. Chateau Marmont, Koko Van Nappo, Mondkopf, Nelson as
well. There is a few other good ones too. but most of the bands are just made of wankers
that know more about fashion than music.
How and when did Sourya start?
We drinked together for many years, and one day we decided to start a band.
How do you define your sound?
This is for the ones who like to move their feet to melancholic music, you know like recession
rage but placed in songs so it won’t hurt anyone
Influences and family?
We’ve got a nineties background. we were all into oasis, radiohead, portishead, bjork, stone
roses, primal scream … we grew up with that. we had our first bellyaches at that time.
now we are mostly listening to american hip-hop, german electronic, and ethnic musics
(Nono is the black drummer with blond hair and blue eyes).
To summarize, could be anything as long as there is a strange chord progression with a
simple melody, driven by syncopated drum beats, at least that’s what we’re trying to do.
You will release your first album in a difficult moment for the music industry: does it
affect you? How do you see the future of this industry?
Sure it affects. the first thing is that the album should be on the market for ages. but that’s a
pain to find anyone that want to take a bet on you today. especially in this country.
But we will not give up the fight
Is it easier to be in a band now with the access to a cheaper and more effective
technology?
Definetely more interesting to be in a band right now, i hope the future of this industry would
still be based and centered on music (Fear of the future quote of the day)
Digital or Physical, is there a place for both?
Not sure there is still a place for CDs. Digital is already the media used by the masses to
listen to music. Streaming on demand is the future for sure. When you’ll be able to stream
whatever you want on phone, well… why would you need to own music ?
Except for Rudy, He is still buying CDs. He bought Snoop Dogg’s best of at the supermarket
last week…
How important is the internet for you as a band? Is it something you are into or you
don’t give a fuck?
Internet is a key factor. we have myspace, facebook, blog, twitter. the full monthy man. we
just lack the webTV. but we are working on that right now. DIY and fuck the industry.
We are in a world with a lot of different models on the net (free streaming, digital
stores, mobile, etc…): what kind of service should be brought to the table? As an
artist, what would be the perfect online service?
The perfect online service would a webpage where you explain your taste in music, and
boom a computer computes all that and it gives you your own song for yourself.
On top of that, if it could be possible to order food and drink in the meantime, it would be
perfect.
Where do you see this whole internet thing going?
It’s a big non sense. it will never work.

CONCOURS DE LA CHANSON DE L’ANNEE : NOUVEAU CONCURRENT, SOURYA
VoxPop fait partie d’une confrèrie de bon goût, à laquelle appartient le très vénérable
Alan McGee, qui considère le groupe Sourya comme l’élite du rock de France…
Le quatuor sort cette semaine son premier single, l’époustoufflant “Anatomy Domine” en
version digitale (ceux qui pensent qu’il s’agit d’une reprise de Pink Floyd sont priés de
prendre un rendez vous chez l’ophtalmo). La très bonne nouvelle c’est que le quatuor electro
rock plus connu en Angleterre qu’en France sortira son premier album très attendu le 21
septembre. En attendant le groupe sera surtout visible dans les iles Britanniques, notamment
à Dublin et dans une soirée du Club NME en Angleterre. Pour l’hexagone, une soirée de
sortie du disque est prévue dans le pub club du Truskel à Paris, près des Grands
Boulevards le 29 avril.
Evidemment rendez vous sur le MySpace de Sourya pour plus d’infos et acheter ce
précieux et miraculeux morceau.

Novembre 2008 : Sourya remporte le concours de remix Nokia Trends Lab.
Le groupe passe un après-midi en studio avec Santogold (Atlantic Records) et Diplo
(Mad Decent) et ouvre la soirée Nokia Trends Lab au Showcase (Paris).
