Should we do More
D
ecember 3rd was Green Day at the
Elementary School of Ras Beirut. The school
celebrated this day by reducing the use of
cleaning products environmentally friendly,
and shutting down the power for a half hour. Also,
each class spent time discussing what a “paper-free”
Christmas would look like. Students came up with
many creative ideas to avoid using wrapping paper,
such as having decorative cloth bags or boxes that
can be reused each year! In 2C, we had a paperless
day. We avoided using any new papers and instead
made use of the student whiteboards. It proved to be
more fun and interactive than paper. In our current
planner, How We Organize Ourselves, we are
discussing what makes a harmonious neighborhood.
The students found out that most of their neighbors
wished for a greener neighborhood, specifically
more plants and trees. We brainstormed how we
could take action to help and watched videos about
neighborhoods who built community gardens. 2C is
excited about going green and helping our school,
neighborhood, and world! n
IC Goes Green
I
nstead of visiting the Science
museum village in Dbayeh, Dr. Moufarrij was kind enough
to bring part of the “Science
Village” to IC and to the science lab. December 3 was a fun activity day
for grades 7 and 5eme at IC.
Each class has been assigned a
period in the science lab to enjoy
the activities and get an opportunity
to explore how to keep their world
green through games.
The focus of the games/activities
was alternative energy. Students
observed a model of electrolysis to
get hydrogen gas instead of fuel to
run cars, and reduce carbon foot prints.
In addition, students sat in groups and built up different models to understand the concepts of solar, wind and
other renewable and alternative energy sources.
According to Dima Itani (7th D) “I learned a lot from this visit and had a lot of fun, it was a great and unique
experience that we don’t see often, I enjoyed this breath-taking event”.n

L’IC et l’environnement
D
ans le cadre de la journée de l’environnement
à l’IC, les enfants et les maîtresses ont dû faire
preuve d’imagination pour passer une journée
sans utiliser une seule feuille de papier.
Les uns ont utilisé des jeux de toutes sortes pour
différentes activités, les autres ont choisi la pâte à
modeler, l’ordinateur, les ardoises…
Finalement, tout le monde a su utiliser des matériaux
divers, sans difficulté, et certainement même avec
plaisir !
Pour terminer en beauté, les lumières ont été éteintes
pendant 1/2h !
Vous imaginez les économies d’énergie si on faisait cela
souvent ?n
Gaining New Perspectives
E
arlier this month, grade 4 and CM1 Ras
Beirut students were amazed by Mr. Paul
Abi Rached, a local environmentalist and
president of the NGO “T.E.R.R.E Liban”
who spoke to the students about sharing the planet.
Mr. Paul’s dynamic presentation highlighted the
interconnectedness of humans, animals, and the
earth, and many students were inspired to action after
witnessing the presentation. Mr. Paul gave many
sobering as well as uplifting facts and statistics about
the diversity of flora and fauna in Lebanon. He had
the crowd singing along as he sung about turning all
of Lebanon into a national park. It is real life role
models such as Mr. Paul that are crucial to facilitating
the action component of the PYP in our classes.n

IC Green day

C Ain Aar celebrates
many special days, but
this year, December 3
was very special with
its green color: floral murals,
sacred tree stories, reduced
amount of paper, flasks of
water replacing plastic bottles,
and turning off the electricity
for half an hour. IC Ain Aar
community also proposed
actions to be taken for the
coming Green Day.n

The Joy of Digital Learning in Chemistry Class
n their chemistry class, grade 8 CPP students designed a 5-minute movie using Windows Live Movie Maker.
Once they knew their assigned chemical element, students explored the elements in their surrounding
community, took short videos with their digital cameras and collected pictures and interesting demonstrations
from the World Wide Web.
Mr. Hanna guided students
to compile their pictures,
demonstrations and videos in
a movie of their own creation.
The young digital citizens
added
music,
captions,
various visual effects and
even bloopers to make their
movies better documentaries
for future students. Inspired
by her chemistry project,
Joanna Asfour volunteered in
her biology class to do another
innovative documentary to
teach her classmates about
vitamin C. n
Re-Imagining my country’s flag
W
hat makes my country special? What makes Lebanon unique? The Ras Beirut students of Grade 4B
expressed their answers to these questions by inventing a new flag for Lebanon with new symbols, colors
and signs. Rhea’s flag had: “green for nature, blue for the nice sea, brown for the ancient gold for the
glory in Lebanon.” While Leen’s represented “Lebanon in the becoming”: yellow for the power of the
sun, brown for the mountains and a beautiful green tree. This was their unique way of celebrating Independence
Day! n

“They have fled their homes”
he vision of IC is to inspire
learners of today to be global
citizen leaders of tomorrow.
Millions of Syrians have
fled their country with nowhere
to go and often with just the
clothes on their backs; many end
up in refugee camps that are both
overcrowded and overwhelmed.
Several organizations are offering
supplies, shelter and medical care
for the people displaced by the
crisis and as we are living up to our
mission of global citizenship, the IC
community has organized a drive
to collect much-needed clothes and
supplies for Syrian refugees.
Each school was assigned to collect
specific items to help make this
drive possible. The Secondary
School was responsible for adult
clothing items that are in good
condition. A complete campaign
including bulletin boards awareness
messages, class visits and collection
booths was designed by 5th & 2nde
students and targeting all secondary
school students. Students’ response
was remarkable and donations kept
on arriving even after deadline.
Thank you IC community for
realizing IC’s mission.n
“Culture full” Day
S
tudents of KGI celebrated
Independence Day in their
own special way. They
explored Lebanese culture
using different media. They
worked in a variety of centers,
making old pottery replicas out
of clay, reproducing the Lebanese
flag with paint, building old
Lebanese houses with Lego.
They came up with different ways
to create a Lebanese “Tarbouch”
using plastic cups, cardboards,
and strings and felt material…
By the end of the day, they knew
how to dance the “Dabkeh” and
sing some “Fairuz” songs!
This day made them more
knowledgeable about their own
culture.n

travers de nombreuses activités,
les élèves de la Petite Section,
groupe jaune, découvrent, puis
exercent leur indépendance, en
apprenant à faire « tout » tout seuls, et
en participant aux jeux lors des moments
collectifs, avant d’aboutir à la réalisation
d’un projet commun (construction d’un
château, d’une ferme etc.). Ils assument
leurs responsabilités dans la classe et
font preuve d’initiative. Ils acquièrent
les habiletés sociales et les compétences
intellectuelles qui conditionnent leur
accès à l’autonomie. Tout cela génère
à un esprit de groupe et assure une
ambiance favorable au développement
du sentiment d’appartenance à une
communauté.n
Arabic contest for Independence Day
O
n the occasion of Independence Day, a writing
competition was organized by the Middle
school Arabic department. The topic for sixth
and seventh graders was: “What is a good
citizen, and what are his duties?” The topic for eighth
and ninth grades was: “What does Independence mean
to you? Do you think Independence will continue to
have any national or social meaning (or value) if the

citizens are corrupt? ” The students, who had not been
previously informed of the topics and had not had a
chance to prepare, surprised their teachers with the
amount and quality of information and their elaborate
way of expressing a deep sense of belonging to their
beloved Lebanon. Their writings beamed with facts and
sincere emotions.
It was a great joy to have our students unite about
Lebanon, and it was a greater joy
to read and share this wealth of
thoughts and feelings with classmates
and teachers. The following students
were rewarded by the director, Miss
Diana Abou Lebdeh, on their writing
pieces. Ziad Hanna, Grade 9; Nour
Moussa, 4 ème; Samer Hanna,
5ème; and Rhea Khoury; 6 ème.
Their compositions were posted on
the bulletin boards and read in class
and at the auditorium and will also
appear on Moodle. We are proud
because they have revealed a true
sense of responsibility as citizens of
their countries and of the world.n
Independence Day at Ain Aar
O
ur young students,
who will be the
citizens of tomorrow,
remembered this day
with pride and reflection. On
the green football field, they
gathered to share poems in the
three languages and actions they
are taking to make their country
a better place. Mrs. Salem led
them in chanting the Lebanese
anthem with passion. As put IC’s
vision, we are definitely moving
towards “inspiring learners
of today to be global citizen
leaders of tomorrow” and to
making a difference in Lebanon
and across the world.n
Les soldats de la patrie, les boucliers de l’indépendance
C
es soldats dont la première arme émane de
cœurs comblés de foi et d’appartenance
nationale, fiers d’une histoire brillante tracée
par les ancêtres tout le long des années et
dont le fruit fut l’indépendance; ces soldat, sont l’arme
de l’unité nationale à laquelle on a recours bien avant
le fusil, pour faire face aux agresseurs portant atteinte
au territoire du pays et à la sécurité de son peuple.
Et cette année-là, malgré les difficultés et les
circonstances difficiles que connaît le Liban, l’Institution
militaire aspire à ce que la fête de l’Indépendance soit
une occasion pour réunir le peuple libanais autour du
concept de l’enracinement dans le sol et l’attachement
à un Liban libre et indépendant, défendu par l’Armée
jouissant de la confiance des citoyens et de leur
ralliement autour d’elle.
C’est la troupe musicale
de l’armée libanaise que
l’on a en l’honneur de
revoir dans notre campus.
A travers un bouquet de
chants nationaux, celle
ci a commemoré du fond
du cœur le souvenir de
grands chanteurs qui
ont enrichi le Liban et
le monde arabe de leurs

immortels, semant dans le
cœur de nos élèves – ces
citoyens de demain – les
graines de responsabilité,
de patriotisme et de
fidélité à un pays qui
a suffert pendant de

L’indépendance se fête aussi dans les classes

novembre: La fête de l’Indépendance.
L’indépendance d’un pays cher au cœur
de nos élèves: le Liban. Avec passion, les
enfants du CM1A de Ras Beyrouth ont
exprimé à leur manière, par des poèmes et
des chansons, une image originale de leur patrie. Les poèmes et les chansons reflétaient un pays
caractérisé par la diversité de ses composantes, mais
ils montraient aussi le désir, commun à celui de tous
les enfants libanais, de transformer cette diversité
unique en source de richesse et de bonheur, pour une
coexistence pacifique.

Kattar was invited to address
the upper Middle school
students on citizenship. He
introduced himself and pointed
out
Lebanon’s
distinguishing
characteristics and role in the

regional and international levels,
thanks to its location, its democracy,
and its unique way of embracing
diversity of religions, cultures, and
civilizations. He urged students to
visit all areas in Lebanon and meet
people from different religions and
cultural backgrounds to gain a real
sense of belonging to our country,
whose citizens are renowned
for being capable, intelligent,
multilingual pioneers with great
ambitions, open-mindedness and
love of freedom.n
BUDDY UP!
W
hat on earth could a
Ras Beirut Grade 4 or
CM1 student have in
common with a PreSchool student, and why would
they even be seen in the same
class together? It appears that
the common factor is the love
of reading which crosses all age
levels and grade levels. During
the first week of November,
the CM1 and grade IV classes
were thrilled to experience the
joy of “buddy reading” with the
pre-school students. They read
stories in the three languages and
shared their ideas, perspectives,
and more importantly the thrill
of inspiring the readers of
tomorrow.n

ovember and December
witnessed many end
of unit presentations
across the Preschool &
Lower Elementary. Parents joined
their children so they can share
with them the highlights of their
learning journey under the themes
studied. Music, Art and PE had
their valuable input too portraying
transdisciplinarity in action! One
parent commented: “It’s a different
way to celebrate important phases
in my daughter’s school life and
a much rewarding one. I heard
her present with pride and share
her goals with clarity. She was
courageous and independent. This
is what makes IC special!” n

est impressionnant est le fait
que nos jeunes apprenants
adoptent ces manchettes
dans leur vie au quotidien et
mettent en action les objectifs
de notre mission : « L’I.C.
a pour mission de former
des jeunes gens capables de
prendre des initiatives,(et)
faisant preuve de réflexion

critique afin qu’ils servent de modèles dans la société.
Le curriculum vise l’excellence à tous les niveaux et
tient compte de l’éducation de la personne dans sa

Gentils, nous? Toujours!
Ê
tre gentil ça met tout le monde de bonne humeur.
Mais ce n’est pas toujours facile. Pour cela, les CE2
C à Ain Aar ont passé une semaine de gentillesse,
car le 13 novembre était « La journée mondiale de
la gentillesse ».
Plusieurs activités ont été proposées et étalées sur la
semaine, telles que « La fleur des compliments, Actes de
gentillesse, Tableau de coopération, Les mots qui touchent
et bien sûr La charte de la gentillesse ».
En espérant que la gentillesse perdure tout le long de notre
vie, les répercussions de cette semaine sur l’ensemble des
apprenants ont été très positives.n

having a “new” PE teacher
who is no other than a proud
mom, Mrs. Tracy Keserwani.
She took part in the parents’
involvement program by planning
and conducting a PE session
for Jason and his friends. The
children followed and completed
an engaging and challenging
circuit. They were courageous in
facing challenges and cooperated
together in order to overcome
obstacles. n
La langue arabe pour communiquer !
«U
n pays qui lit est un pays qui vit” et surtout
s’il le fait en arabe ! Partant de ce slogan,
les élèves de CE2C à Ain Aar ont pris la
décision de faire tous les soirs une lecture
personnelle, en arabe, à la maison…et le lendemain,
durant le rassemblement matinal en classe, il/elle vient
faire un petit exposé de sa lecture devant ses camarades...
Et, la séance terminée, ils se mettent à deux, prennent
les fiches des “Incollables” et se disent des devinettes. A
qui mieux mieux de répondre en arabe et pas n’importe
lequel… L’arabe classique !n

his year, Preschool Ain
Aar decided to follow
Saint
Barbara’s
steps
and go around school to
spread joy and laughter. Two
hundred disguised children with
their teachers went around the
Elementary and Middle school
corridors
with
enchanting
sounds: “…Hachli Barabara,
wil 2ami7 bil el kwara…” Some
accompanied the song with
percussion instruments filling
the Ain Aar walls with endearing
music.
They even had a stop by the
Upper School offices and made all
of us be part of their wonderful
world, that of childhood! n

C Ain Aar JV boys’ football
team along with the middle
school girls’ football team, and
the middle school track and
field team, spent three productive
days at Peaks Hotel in Faytroun

Training Camp at Peaks Hotel
on November 21-24. This spacious
former monastery is charmingly
located on a hill top surrounded by
beautiful nature. The students spent
a most enjoyable weekend, and the
question has already been asked
when the next camp will take place.

ans le cadre de l’unité de
recherche ”Comment Nous Nous
Organisons”, du thème ”Nous
sommes des êtres sociaux”,
les élèves du CM1 et GIV ont reçu au
collège Mme Abi Karam de l’IRAP. Elle
leur a expliqué les objectifs de cette
ONG et les services offerts aux enfants
malentendants. Nos élèves ont posé des
questions pertinentes qui leur ont permis
d’avoir des renseignements intéressants
sur les enfants pris en charge par cette
ONG. Ainsi, ils sont prêts à les recevoir
au collège durant une matinée pour jouer
avec eux. n
Débat de la Paix
R
echerches,
discussions
et
échanges
d’informations et d’idées, les élèves des CM2
A, B, et C ont débattu le thème < égalité
entre filles et garçons > pour le Débat de la
Paix, concours organisé par l’AEFE. Jade Klat, élève
de CM2 A, a été sélectionnée et représentera l’I.C.
dans ce débat au niveau national. n
Les grands élèves de CM2
N
ous avons été chargés par la
directrice, cinq élèves et moimême de l’école élémentaire de
Ras Beyrouth suite à la sélection
de nos productions d’écrit dans le cadre
du concours pour la paix, d’aller à la cour
de récréation des CE1- Grade 2 chaque
jour. Notre rôle consiste à montrer aux
petits comment jouer au foot en suivant les
règlements de ce jeu et essayer de résoudre
les problèmes que les petits rencontrent.
Nous avons mis en place un emploi du temps
pour chacun de notre groupe. Par la suite ,
nous avons choisi un partenaire de la section
anglaise afin de réussir notre deuxième but
qui consiste à montrer que la coopération et
la communication entre les deux sections,
anglaise et française, nous mènent sur la
route d’un citoyen responsable ! Malgré quelques obstacles pour démarrer, le projet est en marche ! Makram Bekdache CM2 Bn

Le salon du livre francophone : Une expérience à ne pas rater !
C
omme chaque année, le salon
du livre francophone s’est
préparé à accueillir des invités
prestigieux et des auteurs
inspirés. Petits et grands étaient à la fête
et ont profité des diverses animations
proposées, rencontres et expositions.
Les élèves des classes de CE2, CM1
et CM2 de Ras Beyrouth ont visité le
salon accompagnés de leurs maitresses
et des parents. La classe de CE2C
était au rendez-vous avec l’écrivain
Anne-Sophie Baumann. Les élèves
ont pu découvrir grâce à cet entretien
le monde de l’édition et du livre.
Ils se sont montrés investigateurs et
réfléchis et ont acquis des informations
enrichissantes sur les étapes à suivre
pour écrire un livre. Ils ont également
manipulé des manuscrits que l’auteur
avait mis à leur disposition. Cette rencontre fut donc une expérience fructueuse où les élèves sont sortis convaincus
que la lecture agrandit l’âme et éclaire la pensée. n

plus! Peu d’informations ne nous désaltèrent point ! C’est pourquoi nous avons accueilli Madame
Diana Alameddine, la maman de
notre camarade de classe Omar
Alameddine. Dans le cadre du
thème “Qui nous sommes”, elle
nous a éclairé sur les bonnes
habitudes à avoir pour une
alimentation saine, révélant les
secrets des groupes d’aliments,
et nous conseillant de varier
les nourritures consommées
en nous basant sur la pyramide
alimentaire. Suite à cette
rencontre les élèves ont réagi
dans leurs journaux en exprimant
leurs idées personnelles et en
prenant de nouvelles décisions
concernant leur alimentation.
Nous sommes des élèves encore
jeunes mais bien équilibrés!n
Ras Beirut Elementary Book Fair 2013
D
uring the week of
December 9-13, students
at Ras Beirut Elementary
School enjoyed their
annual book fair. Imagine having
a book store in our school where
we could peruse and purchase
books easily! Local book vendors
were represented and offered
quite a selection from which the
students could choose. Parents
were also invited to enjoy the
book fair with their children. Titles were offered in French
and English languages and at all
reading levels.n
Walk in children’s shoes
W
riting comes from the heart and the mind;
it is an expression of utter feelings, it is part
of one’s life. Three Preschool teachers: Nada
Bekdache, Nayla Ejjeh and Fatima Kammoun,
decided to walk in children’s shoes and to share their lives
with the younger generation through writing stories and
inviting those young readers to dreamland. They built
a whole other world with just words; everything they
always wanted to experience, they let their characters
experience. They simply shared their hobby with us or
they wrote to get things clear and straight in their head,
that’s all.
When asked why they write, Nada said « J’écris pour
le plaisir et pour moi-même surtout. Les enfants m’ont
inspiré et m’ont donné l’envie d’écrire car ils sont ceux
sur qui je peux compter pour l’avenir. J’écris surtout
pour aller plus loin, pour un avenir meilleur et un
monde meilleur. »
Nayla said: “living with kids took me to a different
world, the world of creativity and imagination. I write
to ensure that books stay the most
important tool to develop, not only
to learn and inquire, but to add a
smile to each child and touch their
heart while they are reading.”
Finally Fatmeh said: “It is the
children’s passion and sincere
emotions they show every time
I share with them my own
experiences that encouraged me
to write those stories hoping that
other children will enjoy them
too.”
Their stories are an expression of
passion, love and eagerness they
wanted to spread to the world.

UN NOUVEAU CLUB DE LECTURE A L’IC
l’initiative d’élèves qui ont exprimé leur désir
de partager leurs lectures entre eux, un nouveau
club de lecteurs a été créé à l’IC. Ce club réunit
ceux qui souhaitent discuter de leurs lectures. La
première rencontre a eu lieu le jeudi 5 décembre 2013
en présence d’élèves des classes de Première (Youssef
Bassil, Ryan Raphael et Marya Melki) et de Terminale
(Najib Awar, Elsa Salim, Kevin Zakka, Miswa Laoun,
Nicolas Aboukasm, John Geahchan, Sasha Zakka, et
Mazen Daher). Salma Kojok, Marielle Hajj Sleiman
et Mischka Mourani qui ont rendu possible le
projet étaient également présentes lors de cette
rencontre très riche en débats.
Plusieurs romans ont fait l’objet de discussions
comme « Le quatrième mur » de Sorj Chalandon
ou « Avenue des géants » de Marc Dugain.
Les débats ont été l’occasion de discuter du rôle
de la littérature, des perceptions différentes
d’une histoire, de l’importance de la lecture dans
la formation d’un individu.
A travers ce club de lecture, l’IC exprime sa
mission culturelle et son action en faveur de la
formation d’un citoyen éclairé et cultivé.
Le club est ouvert à tous, élèves ou enseignants,
qui souhaitent y participer. n

for the whole college.
The ERC and school
administrators have met
several times with Atlas
Rubicon representatives
Mr. Sergio Bolaños
and Ms. Soraya Stelle to explore

coordinated with Rubicon to upload
the existing curriculum guides into
the system. Just before the winter
holiday, Senior Vice President Mrs.
Mishka Mourani, school directors
Ms. Wadad Hoss, Ms.Diana Abou
Lebdeh, Ms. Lina Mouchantaf, Mrs.
Paula Mufarrij, Mrs. Ghada Malouf,
Ms. Julia Kozak, along with ERC
director Dr. Mahmud Shihab and
school curriculum coordinators, Mr.
Elie Hayek, Mr. Dagher Mehenna,
and Mrs. Connie Hadba, attended a
web conference. At that time, Atlas
Rubicon Project Representatives
presented the first draft of the Atlas
Rubicon format developed for IC.
Suggestions were made to modify
the individual templates for each of
the college’s programs – PYP, IBPD,
the French Baccalaureate, and the
Lebanese Baccalaureate – and better
fit the format of the existing guides.
When the system is launched,
teachers will be able to update the
curriculum guides that have already
been uploaded and to add new
ones. We are looking forward to the
next step in the process, providing
training to our teachers to begin
using this exciting online curriculum
mapping system.n
