LES modules - FONDATION Pierre bergé - YVES SAINT LAURENT One after the other the graphite pencil drawings, sculptures and installations made by Franziska Furter (almost all in black and white) reveal abstract forms and landscapes that may be large in scale. Inspired by images taken from mangas, the world of science fiction and everyday life, the artist filters reality, retranscribing it in fluctuating creations derived from the plant and natural world. The forms could be close to sound recording curves, or may evolve freely to look like nebulae. The fragility of the graphic or visual treatment is in contrast to the dynamic, moving, indeed violent character of the drawings and volumes created, their nature permanently oscillating between the organic and the artificial. For the exhibition at the Palais de Tokyo Franziska Furter is planning an innovative installation. For the time being the wall is discarded as a support in favor of the ground. At first glance the intervention is invisible, the gesture discreet: a black fitted carpet covers the floor of the exhibition space. However, it conceals the presence of glass pieces. When visitors move over the surface of the work, the experiment is activated and strangeness comes into operation. Similar to the pleasure we can feel moving across the surface of a frozen lake – a pleasure not bereft of some anxiety – the artist offers us a fragile, disturbing installation. A form of romanticism subjected to violence. LES modules - FONDATION Pierre bergé - YVES SAINT LAURENT Florian Fouché avails himself of a diversified sculptural vocabulary : structured compositions, often using assemblage, the manifest presence of materials, hand-made manufacture including the reproduction of objects, a dialectic between abstraction and figuration. His proposal for the Module, poetically entitled Constellation basse, attests to the attention he pays to positioning the pieces in relation to one another and in space. His seemingly disparate sculptures and photographs form a hermetic itinerary. The sculptures which constitute the main part of the exhibition consist of a contrasted collection of forms, motifs and textures, each emanating from a special world : city or country (Dernière Ruche), theater (Infernum), Inca architecture (Uhccip uhcam / Piccham chuU) or rustic geometry (Moule ouvert). Thus a didactic arrangement deploys the striking simplicity of a primitive bulbous form inspired by an Inca tomb : a maquette is presented on a table beside the photograph that served as his model. On the ground the long-limbed Moule ouvert crawls or takes flight, evoking a chrysalis between two orders : geometric and organic, architectural and vegetable. Dernière Ruche is horizontal, a tight-rope-walking assemblage : a plant box in flower held by two straps hangs under an old school bench, and on the bench is a wooden parallelepiped, a beehive (ruche). An aura of violence emanates from Infernum : a trussed up roll of black plastic, shiny and puckered, a vertical panel resting on a red plinth on casters ; this miniature scene associating the guillotine and the curtain is at the confines between theater and a ritual of death. Photographs provide the sculptures with a realistic horizon and anchor their forms in an urban world, with its quota of nature. The photos focus on details, a staircase in profile, a garland made from plants, a suspended sheet stand out against their background : the forms are preparing to migrate from their context. In 2010 the extramural Module will be installed in the vestibule of the Palais de Tokyo. This is where Alexis Guillier, currently in his fifth year at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Arts of Paris-Cergy, will present his video Reworks. Derived from a slide show originally devised for a lecture, Reworks casts its omniscient gaze over a collection of representations of works of art that have been subjected to acts of vandalism. These destructions are like so many disruptions and disclosures in official speeches. It is left to Rodin’s Thinker in Cleveland, damaged by a home-made bomb on March 24, 1970, to conjure up an underground story of American terrorism. It is left to the relocation of The Three Shades (by the same sculptor), from the debris of the World Trade Center to the Mémorial de Caen, to endow that sculpture with un unsuspected symbolic function. Interface et programmation réalisées par Cécile Bruzac But going beyond the displacements he effects, the artist draws up a mental cartography in which two contradictory relationships with time collide: that of a flashing disfigurement that comes and interrupts the slow and natural deterioration of time. And by moving randomly from one document to another, Alexis Guillier causes any taxonomic apprehension of art, whether chronological, geographical or typological, to falter. Since its inception in September 2006, the Modules program has played host to around a hundred artists, and is today proving to be a fantastic tool for experimentation and the promotion of the young French art scene. Les Modules du Palais de Tokyo bénéficie désormais du mécénat de la Fondation Pierre Bergé - Yves Saint Laurent. The Pierre Bergé-Yves Saint Laurent Foundation is giving its seal of approval to the Palais de Tokyo Modules by sponsoring them in 2010. The Modules will therefore be known as the MODULES-FONDATION PIERRE BERGÉ-YVES SAINT LAURENT. A laboratory and an instrument for promoting young French creativity A laboratory for young French creativity, the Palais de Tokyo Modules every month give the seal of approval to two artists living in France in spaces specially reserved for the program. A new generation of artists (25 to 30 years of age) has recently appeared, and is having a profoundly upsetting impact on the French artistic landscape. The Palais de Tokyo supports this emerging art, sustains this spirit of renewal, and – as from 2006 - has created the Modules, a program of exhibitions entirely dedicated to promoting this new generation. The Palais de Tokyo’s Modules program is not satisfied with just exhibiting the artists, it accompanies them in the production of their works over a period of time, and offers them considerable visibility in the media and a unique international network. A pool of talent scouts The Modules program is devised in collaboration with prominent figures in the art world, bringing together its partner, Le Journal des Arts, and representatives from contemporary art museums and centers, and young exhibition curators. Le Journal des Arts gives the artists a free hand, and in each issue publishes a graphic intervention by one of them, designed especially for the occasion. The Palais de Tokyo is an art center which since it first opened has been dedicated to bringing the public close to the best French and international contemporary creative work. Open from noon to midnight, employing a team of mediators, housing a restaurant, a shop and a bookshop, the Palais de Tokyo is a truly vibrant place that unhesitatingly mixes conceptual art and chainsaw sculpture contests, Minimalism and zombies, ready-mades and mutants, to let people see contemporary art in an up-to-the-minute, complex-free way, as often as possible from the point of view of the artists themselves. It welcomes young artists in residence (Le Pavillon), sometimes offering them their first solo show (Les Modules), or entrusts the curating of some of its exhibitions to artists (Ugo Rondinone in 2007, Jeremy Deller in 2008). The Palais de Tokyo also stages exhibitions abroad (Les Chalets). LES modules - FONDATION Pierre bergé - YVES SAINT LAURENT Research work preparatory to an ambitious exhibition in 2010 After two and a half years of experimentation, the time has come to make this program even more effective, in particular by reinforcing its mediation, funding and production tools. A major exhibition dedicated to young French creativity is planned for summer 2010; it will occupy the whole of the Palais de Tokyo and – a first – will be held in collaboration with the Musée d’art moderne de la Ville de Paris. The Modules program is thus enabling us to carry out important research and production work with young artists. The Salons Every month the Modules give the opportunity to hold a salon. The players in the art world, critics, exhibition curators, gallery owners and collectors, gather round the artists who have been invited.
