A European war turned global with the Allies calling upon their colonies for help. Episodes 3 and 4, Hell and Rage, follow life in the trenches and the show the unprecedented levels of violence and carnage with the use of industrial and chemical warfare. In Episode 5, Deliverance, American troops swing the conÀict decisively away from Germany and on 11 November 1918, on the battle¿elds of France, bugles are blown, marking the armistice. Pianist Philippe Raskin is winner of several international piano competitions and performs regularly as part of chamber groups and as a soloist with orchestras in Europe, Asia, Africa and the United States. Johannes Fleischmann made his solo debut of the Brahms Violin Concerto with the Austrian-Slovakian Philharmonic Orchestra at the Wiener Konzerthause (Vienna Concert Hall). Programme: He continues to perform as soloist and Beethoven: Violin Sonata No. 5 in F major, Op. 24, chamber musician in Festivals and “Springsonata” with celebrated orchestras such as the Leoš Janáþek - Sonata for violin and piano Vienna Philhramonic and the Vienna Richard Strauss - Violin Sonata in E Àat major, Op.18 Symphonic. Sat. 29 Nov. @ 7pm Advance tickets only, Alliance Française, Tel. 4917113 MAXIME ZECCHINI and the NAIROBI ORCHESTRA commemorating wwi Nairobi Orchestra is one of the oldest amateur orchestras in Africa, founded in 1947 by Italian Prisoners of War after World War II. In a tribute to the WWI centenary, Alliance Française has invited the French pianist Maxime Zecchini, one of the few pianists in the world who specializes in the repertoire for the left hand, to perform in Nairobi. Maxime will be performing Ravel’s Piano Concerto for the Left Hand accompanied by the Nairobi Orchestra. This piece was commissioned by the Austrian pianist Paul Wittgenstein who lost his right-arm during World War 1. It will be performed for the ¿rst time in Kenya. LE CONCERT IMPROMPTU Depuis 1991, le Concert Impromptu est un ensemble permanent qui se consacre au répertoire du quintette à vent. Son rayonnement international lui a permis de se faire entendre sur les plus grandes scènes du Globe. Considéré par le Washington Times comme ‘the ¿nest French woodwind quintet’, le Concert Impromptu est l’invité régulier de Radio France, d’Arte et de France Télévision, ainsi que des médias les plus reconnus à l’étranger. Fondé en 1947 par des prisonniers de guerre italiens après la Seconde Guerre Mondiale, Nairobi Orchestra est l’un des plus anciens orchestres amateurs d’Afrique. A l’occasion du centenaire de la Première Guerre Mondiale, l’Alliance Française invite à Nairobi Maxime Zecchini, l’un des rares pianistes au monde spécialisé dans les œuvres pour la main gauche. Accompagné par le Nairobi Orchestra, Maxime interprètera le Concerto pour la Main Gauche de Maurice Ravel. Cette œuvre a été commandée par le pianiste autrichien Paul Wittgenstein après la perte de son bras droit pendant la Première Guerre Mondiale. Elle sera présentée au Kenya pour la première fois. Born in Paris in 1979, Maxime received diplomas from several “Conservatoires de Région”. In 2001, he received the Diplôme National d’Etudes Supérieures Musicales with highest honors and a special commendation from the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique of Lyon. This earned him a place at Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique of Paris where he studied advanced pro¿ciency under Jean-François Heisser. Winner of several international competitions, Maxime is the ¿rst French pianist to hold a degree from the prestigious “Incontri col Maestro Academy”in Italy. Last year, he recorded an anthology of the three most famous concertos for the left hand (Ravel: Piano Concerto for the Left Hand/Proko¿ev: Piano Concerto No. 4 and Britten: Diversions) with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Jan Moritz Onken. Damian has worked with the English Symphony Orchestra, the Opéra National du Rhin in Strasbourg, the Strasbourg Philharmonic and has conducted throughout Europe. Kenya violinist, Brian Sempele, will be the leader. Brian has been the concertmaster since 2013 and has had the privilege of performing with international music stars including Jacques-Greg Belobo, Riccardo Muti as well as with the Soweto String Quartet, the London Garden Opera among many others. EXHIBITIONS 6 - 28 Nov. This exhibition is a collection of works from Coastal Artists, each with a distinct signature but all basking under the common inÀuence of sea, light, coconut trees, color and atmosphere. It is being presented by Alliance Française de Mombasa together with the National Kenya Visual Artists Network - Mombasa Chapter (NKVAN). A photo exhibition by the French photographer, Pierre-Yves Ginet, in partnership with the women’s rights organization ‘Femmes Ici et Ailleurs’. Presented on the occasion of the 2014 Human Rights Day, the exhibition highlights untold stories of women engaged in different forms of resistance from 17 countries.
