Neurodevelopmental Techniques

A qualified NDT instructor, Toronto, Ontario
The tentative objectives of this workshop are:
- to understand how NDT as a treatment concept enchances and fits
into the practice of occupational therapy
— to gain a knowledge of the typical abnormal upper extremity
patterns observed in children with cerebral palsy
— to develop an understanding of, the, practical application of preparation
techniques as a prerequisite technique to achieving upper extremity
function
— to gain a practical application of the theoretical model of treatment
i.e. some treatment techniques using a sensory-motor approach
— to understand the basic principles of oral motor dysfunction in
children with cerebral palsy and some techniques to improve oral
motor function during feeding
This is a practical, hands on course with a certain degree of physical
well being required. Techniques will be demonstrated on pediatric
clients.

Hand Therapy and Evaluation

Sponsored by the Arthritis Society
This workshop will involve one day of theoretical sessions with Ms.
Mackin and local plastic surgeons, and one day of clinical application of
hand evaluation and subsequent treatment goals.
Evelyn Mackin, L.P.T., is the Administrator of Rehabilitation at the Hand
Rehabilitation Centre in Philadelphia. She is currently president of the
newly formed International Federation of Societies of the Hand and coeditor of Rehabilitation of the Hand.

— comprendre comment les techniques de développement neurologique
entant que concept de traitement rehaussent et s'accordent à
l'exercice de l'ergothérapie;
acquérir une connaissance des physionomies anormales typiques des
membres supérieurs observées chez des enfants atteints d'infirmité
motrice cérébrale;
— développer une compréhension de l'application pratique des techniques de préparation en tant que technique préalablement nécessaire
à la réalisation de la fonction des membres supérieurs;
acquérir une application pratique du modèle théorique de traitement,
p. ex., certaines techniques de traitement utilisant une approche
sensori-motrice
— comprendre les principes de base du dérèglement moteur oral chez
les enfants atteints d'infirmité motrice cérébrale et certaines techniques pour améliorer la fonction motrice orale au cours de l'alimentation.
Il s'agit d'un cours pratique. Un certain degré de bien-être physique est
requis. On fera la démonstration des techniques sur des patients en
pédiatrie.

This workshop will describe one model of a Quality Assurance Program,
the critical types of standards required, the eleven steps of the process
involved and the elements of a Quality Assurance documentation report.
Participants will be guided in the writing of one minimal standard, one
reasonable standard, and a clinical protocol for which an audit will be
developed and conducted. Also covered will be an outline of the process
of translating standards into an audit tool.
No prerequisites are required but participants are encouraged to be wellversed on the Guidelines for the Client-Centred Practice of Occupational
Therapy.

those principles through an experiential Component.
NGT is an innovative, non-traditional, problem-centered group process
method. It is a powerful, specific technique, which can be applied in
a variety of specific problem-solving and decision-making situations.
It involves a rational sequence of procedural steps, making it extremely task-effective as it produces an identifiable outcome or solution. In addition, it fosters independent thinking and creativity on the
part of the group members, thus reducing conflict and generally
resulting in high quality outcomes.
