MONTREAL, January 19, 2012: Centaur Theatre is proud to present the world premiere of In Absentia by Morris
Panych, recipient of numerous awards including two Governor General’s Literary Awards for Drama.
Arguably the most celebrated playwright and director in Canada, Panych’s plays have been produced in over a
dozen languages and he has directed more than 90 productions across the country. The Calgary-born theatre artist
is also a distinguished actor with an impressive list of theatre, television and film credits.
“Premiering In Absentia by Morris Panych has brought a lot of excitement to Centaur Theatre and the Montreal
theatre community. I am delighted to direct his new play. It’s a moving piece that examines the influence that our
loved ones have in our lives - even in their absence, and the circuitous nature of winter,” says Roy Surette, Centaur
Theatre’s Artistic and Executive Director.
Surette selected an all-star cast for the play. Susan Glover (Evelyn), Jade Hassouné (Jasper), Paul Hopkins (Tom) and
Carlo Mestroni (Bill) have all performed at Centaur Theatre in the past but this is Jillian Fargey’s (Collette) Montreal
debut. She plays a woman whose husband has been abducted while on a business trip to Columbia.
The Vancouver-based, award-winning actress might be new to the Montreal stage but she has worked with Morris
Panych on several occasions. Panych admires her talent and the passion she brings to her character. “The writer
and director are only the beginning of the acting process; the initiators. Jillian carries the character in her heart.
She is deeply connected to the piece; that's what a great actress does.”
Director Roy Surette also picked an extraordinary creative team for this production. Set & Costume Designer, John
C. Dinning, and Lighting Designer, Luc Prairie, display remarkable artistic synergy. The interplay between Dinning’s
evocative wintry colour palette and Prairie’s unique lighting approach creates a dazzling effect and enriches the
emotional texture of the play.
Stage Manager, Melanie St-Jacques; Assistant Stage Manager, Samantha Hogan; and Assistant Director, Cameron
Mackenzie complete the accomplished team.

MONTRÉAL, le 19 janvier 2012 : Le théâtre Centaur est fier de présenter en première mondiale In Absentia de
Morris Panych, lauréat de nombreux prix dont deux Prix littéraires du Gouverneur général dans la catégorie
théâtre.
Probablement le dramaturge et le metteur en scène canadien le plus célèbre, Panych a vu ses pièces jouées dans
plus d’une dizaine de langues et il a lui-même dirigé plus de 90 productions partout au pays. Né à Calgary, l’artiste
de théâtre est également un éminent acteur qui a figuré à l’affiche de nombreux films, téléfilms et pièces de
théâtre.
« Le fait de monter en première In Absentia de Morris Panych a suscité beaucoup d’émoi tant au théâtre Centaur
que dans la communauté théâtrale montréalaise. Je suis ravi de mettre en scène sa nouvelle pièce. Il s’agit d’une
œuvre touchante qui examine l’influence que les êtres qui nous sont chers ont sur notre vie, même en leur
absence, et montre la nature tortueuse de l’hiver », indique Roy Surette, directeur artistique et exécutif du théâtre
Centaur.
Surette a fait appel à des artistes de talent. Susan Glover (Evelyn), Jade Hassouné (Jasper), Paul Hopkins (Tom) et
Carlo Mestroni (Bill) ont tous déjà joué au théâtre Centaur, tandis que Jillian Fargey (Collette) y fait ses débuts à
Montréal. Elle incarne une femme dont le mari a été enlevé lors d’un voyage d’affaires en Colombie.
La comédienne primée qui vit à Vancouver est peut-être nouvelle sur la scène montréalaise, mais elle a déjà eu
l’occasion de jouer avec Morris Panych à plusieurs reprises. Panych admire le talent de Fargey et la passion qu’elle
apporte à son personnage. « L’auteur et le metteur en scène ne sont que le début du processus d’interprétation, ils
en sont les instigateurs. Jillian porte le personnage dans son cœur. Elle est profondément liée à la pièce; c’est
l’apanage d’une grande comédienne. »
Le metteur en scène Roy Surette s’est également entouré d’une extraordinaire équipe de création pour cette
production. John C. Dinning, créateur des décors et des costumes, et Luc Prairie, concepteur des éclairages,
affichent une synergie artistique remarquable. L’action conjuguée de la palette de couleurs hivernales évocatrice de
Dinning et de l’unique technique d’éclairage de Prairie crée un effet éblouissant qui vient enrichir la trame
émotionnelle de la pièce.
La régisseure, Melanie St-Jacques, son adjointe, Samantha Hogan et l’assistant metteur en scène, Cameron
Mackenzie complètent cette talentueuse équipe.
