Short introduction to the cluster

This cluster has 15 nodes
interconnected with 1Gbit/s ethernet. Each of
them has two quad-processors (Intel Xeon
X5560 with 2.8 GHz, 24 Gbytes of memory, and
a 250Gbytes SATA disk) The master node has 8
Gbyte of memory and two 1Tbyte SATA disks
on a raid 1 adaptor; operating system: Linux
(Centos 5.4)

This cluster is used in the L2C to
make ab initio and classical simulations of
glass-forming systems, carbon nanotubes, and
other complex systems.
Figure 1: The Intel processor cluster kraken, L2C
(2011)
Features: Due to its gigabyte ethernet connections this machine allows to run parallel codes using Open
MPI. The batch queuing system is Sun Grid Engine with one default queue and no limit on resources

Detailed Features
Physical setup: Rack mounted (42 U)
Number of nodes: 15
Nodes: Two Intel Xeon quad-core processors with 2.8 GHz (model X5560) and 24 Gbytes RAM
Connection: Gigabit ethernet via a Dell Power Connect Switch
Operating System: Linux Centos release 5.4, kernel 2.6.18 SMP x86_64
Software for parallelisation: MPI (Intel Open MPI version 11.1)
Power consumption per unit: about 250 W
Further information
Name of the cluster: kraken
This rack mounted cluster has been bought in 2010 from Dell (model Poweredge R410) ; each unit (1U)
contains two Intel Xeon quad-core processors and is connected to the master via Dell gigabyte ethernet switch
with a total of 96 Gbit/s of bandwidth. This is sufficient to run parallel jobs on up to 32 processors (depending
on the type of application).
Installed hard drives: the master node has 2 SATA disks on a raid1 adaptor with a total of 1 Tbytes usable. To
increase the storage capacity each slave node has a 250 Gbyte disk.
Queuing system: Sun Grid Engine version 6.2
Installed software: fortran g77, g90, gcc vers. 4.1.2, Open MPI (Intel, gnu, Sun), VASP, SIESTA, qmon
Typical uptime: about 6 months
