Smith è un oggetto dalle molteplici funzioni che può rendersi
utile nelle più svariate occasioni e in luoghi diversi quali la
casa e l’ufficio. Achille Castiglioni una volta scrisse: “Un
oggetto multifunzionale non è mai perfetto. Meglio progettare
per una funzione che per due. Se è utile alla prima non lo è
alla seconda. Qual’ è la prima e qual’ è la seconda? Non lo
so. Progettalo per una funzione e andrà bene per due. Se
avete degli amici prendetene due e varranno per quattro.
Lavoreranno tutti? Non lo so”. Ampliando la tesi di Castiglioni,
lo Smith assolve a sette funzioni differenti: può contenere
oggetti di ogni genere, può essere appeso alla scrivania grazie
al piano sospeso, è un piano di appoggio ma anche uno
sgabello ed è maneggevole grazie alle maniglie e alle rotelle.
La forma dello Smith è il risultato del bilanciamento tra tutte
queste caratteristiche e l’attenzione verso l’ambiente. Questo
oggetto ibrido è utile come tavolino, come comodino, come
sgabello o come piccolo tavolo da pranzo, sfuggendo così a
qualsiasi classificazione all’ interno di una specifica tipologia. È
quindi chi lo utilizza che può definire in ultima istanza la natura
dello Smith attraverso l’ uso che ne fa.

Smith is a multi-functional object intended to provide support
for various activities in different areas of the home and office.
Achille Castiglioni once wrote: “A multi-functional object is
never perfect. Better to design for one function than two. If
the fi rst works the second won’t. Which is the first and which
second? I don’t know. Take it for one function and two will work.
If you have friends take two so the functions become four. Will
all of them work? I don’t know.” Expanding on Castiglioni’s
hypothesis, Smith’s features provide seven distinct functions;
a container providing space for storage, a cantilevered top
allowing the object to be hung from a table, a fl at upper
surface serving as a side table or temporary seat, handles to
facilitate moving, wheels for carting, and a protruding bottom
that allows the wheels to hang over the sides when multiple
Smiths are stacked. Smith’s form is the result of a balanced
ecology between these features and functions. This hybrid
object is useful at a desk, a bedside, a sofa or a dining table
and avoids classification into one specific typology. Ultimately
it is the user who will come to defi ne Smith through its use.

Smith est un object multi-fonctions qui pourra être utile dans
plusieurs occasions et positionné dans des éndroits différents,
chez soi et dans le bureau. Achille Castiglioni avait écrit une
fois que: “Un object multi-fonctions ne sera jamais parfait.
Il vaut mieux de faire le plan pour une seule function plutôt
que pour deux. S’il sera utile pour la première il ne le sera
point pour la deuxième. Quelle est la première et quelle est
la deuxième? Je ne le sais pas. Fais le plan pour une fonction
et il ira bien pour les deux. Si vous avez des amis prenez-en
deux qui vont valoir pour quatre. Est-ce tout le monde va
bien travailler? Je ne sais pas” Si on veut étendre la thèse à
Castiglioni, Smith atteint au moins sept fonctions différentes: il
peut contenir des objects différents, il pourra être accroché au
bureau grâce à son plan suspendu, il devient un plan d’appui
ainsi qu’un tabouret, pratique et maniable grâce à poignets
et roulettes. La silhouette du Smith devient le résultat de la
balance parmi toutes ces peculiarités ainsi que l’attention
pour l’ambiance. Cet objet hybride est utile autant que petit
table, chevet, tabouret ainsi que petite table à manger tout en
réfusant quelconque classification dans une typologie exacte.
Ça veut dire que seulement l’utiliseur pourra identifier la vraie
nature du Smith à travers l’utilisation qu’il en fait.

es nicht. Entwirf den Gegenstand für eine Bedürfnis und er
wird beide nützen. Wenn ihr Freunde habt, dann nimm’ zwei
und werden für vier gelten. Werden alle arbeiten? Ich weiss
es nicht” Wenn wir aus dieser von Castiglioni aufgestellten
These erweitern möchten, dann Smith nützt sieben
unterschiedlichen Bedürfnissen: er kann als Behälter dienen,
kann auf dem Tisch aufgehängt sein dank seinem erhobenen
Aufsatzplatte, ist eine Anhaltsaufsatzplatte sowie auch einen
Hocker und ist sehr weindig dank ihre Griffe und Rolle. Das
Aussehen von Smith wird als Ergebnis gegeben für alle
diesen unterschiedlichen Eigenschaften und Aufmerksamkeit
für die Umwelt. Dieser vielfältige Gegenstand ist nutzvoll als
Kleintisch, als Nachttisch, als Hocker oder als klein Esstisch,
so geht er jenseits alle möglichen Einstufungen im Rahmen
einer festen Beschreibung. Der Benutzer wird am Besten seine
Funktion festsetzten je nach Gebrauch.
