All these “bonjours” and “ça va biens”. All these incredible “parcs nationaux” and mighty “rivières”. All these “loups” (wolves), “ours bruns” (brown bears) and “baleines” (whales). It’s ten-year-old Scarlett’s and sevenyear-old Fin’s first experience of North America, and people are speaking French. We’re in Quebec, Canada’s fiercely independent province. It’s a bit like Scotland but much, much bigger. Quebec is, in fact, seven times the size of the UK and most people also speak English, so our half-arsed French isn’t called on too much.
