exte d`Anne-Lou Vicente I Extrait du catalogue d`exposition Première
The writing of places Sandra Plantiveau has decided to showcase her drawings according to a very specific plan: Two rather basic tables are used here as a window display: Some aligned A4 paper format drawings are showcased under a glass window so that they can be looked at as high angle. Other drawings in a larger format are sheltered inside metal workshop style furniture. In order for the viewer to discover what’s hidden in these dark drawers, a body movement linked to a time scale is imposed to the viewer. Through imposed body movement and time scale, the still aspect of the drawing is hindered. The scheming space and the exhibition space are both transformed into a mise-en-abyme, that is a space-time continuum and a space-movement. The way of showcasing the work, deliberately excluding a mainstream hanging with a passive audience already triggers a questioning regarding the act of showcasing. The drawing, the artist’s favorite medium of expression, appears as a lively material, gradually shaping, in between document and work, research and outcome. This in between status mirrors the importance of the process closely linked with time and justifies the use of a 0.01 lead pencil. This time frame is firstly dedicated to the observation of reality, and then structured within the artist’s mindset, and finally within what makes its material extension: the actual surface of the sheet of paper and in a broader meaning, the showcasing space. Throughout a constant tension between appearance and disappearance, between real and fantasy, between the figurative and the abstract, Sandra Plantiveau’s work reveals bits of places. She makes them her own before including them in her work, as in between a line and a curve. The imprints of landscapes, architectures and other objects she has chosen to showcase out of their original context reveal as much as they hide, tell a story as much as they induct silence, all orchestrated within a scenography highlighting the emptiness and the silence rather than the galore and the spoken words. Sandra Plantiveau’s work evolves around the recording of the visual, the image and the sound. Throughout this process, she soaks up her mind of images-memories, through random cropping in the shadow, through perceiving the nocturnal silence of an exhibition space. A space that will later on showcase the graphic line on a roll of paper. Throughout this process, she delivers a representation of reality. It is a sensitive and sensory experience including the random appearance of light, sound, absence. The drawing is an evolving and living material representing thought and nature. The natural process, that is shaping, sedimentation, wearing and the intellectual process, that is reflection, memory, and forgetting are showcased on an equal footing. The perception of reality and its representation within a specific context of creation is an experience offered to both the artist and the viewer. It highlights the main essence and function of the gaze, a mean that leads to both observation and interpretation.
