CANADA AND BRITISH COLUMBIA SIGN A MULTI-YEAR AGREEMENT
TO SUPPORT FRENCH-LANGUAGE SERVICES
VANCOUVER – The Government of Canada and the Government of British Columbia announced today the
signing of a three-year bilateral agreement to support French-language services.
Josée Verner, Minister of International Cooperation and Minister for La Francophonie and Official
Languages, and John van Dongen, British Columbia Minister of State for Intergovernmental Relations,
announced equal federal and provincial contributions to the Canada–British Columbia Co-operation Agreement
on Official Languages – 2006-2009. Total funding amounts to $4.2 million.
“I am pleased that the governments of Canada and British Columbia are working together to help
members of the province’s Francophone community flourish,” said Minister Verner. “This multi-year agreement
will contribute to advancing French-language services in the province, as well as keep Canada’s linguistic
duality alive.”
The Canada–British Columbia Co-operation Agreement on Official Languages will support the
development and implementation of concrete measures to increase the province’s capacity to offer services to
the Francophone community in priority sectors.
“Since 2001, the Government of British Columbia has been working hard to foster the vitality of our
Francophone community by creating or expanding services available in French in key areas,” said Minister van
Dongen. “I’m happy to work with the federal government to continue to enhance our capacity to provide
services to our Francophone community.”
Under the agreement, the Government of British Columbia developed a multi-year strategic plan with
two main objectives: to increase the capacity of the British Columbia Francophone Affairs Program to assist
British Columbia ministries and agencies; and to support service development, planning, and delivery in the
priority areas of health, economic development, social services, justice, and communications, information and
consultation.

SIGNENT UNE ENTENTE PLURIANNUELLE SUR LES SERVICES EN FRANÇAIS
VANCOUVER — Les gouvernements du Canada et de la Colombie-Britannique ont annoncé aujourd'hui la signature
d’une entente bilatérale de trois ans visant à appuyer les services en français.
Josée Verner, ministre de la Coopération internationale et ministre de la Francophonie et des Langues
officielles, et John van Dongen, ministre d'État aux Relations intergouvernementales de la Colombie-Britannique, ont
annoncé que leurs gouvernements respectifs financeraient en parts égales l'Entente de collaboration Canada—
Colombie-Britannique en matière de langues officielles – 2006-2009. L’entente est d'une valeur totale de 4,2 millions
de dollars.
« Je suis ravie que les gouvernements du Canada et de la Colombie-Britannique travaillent ensemble pour
aider la communauté francophone de la province à s'épanouir, a déclaré la ministre Verner. Cette entente
pluriannuelle fera progresser la prestation de services en français dans cette province, en plus de soutenir la vitalité de
la dualité linguistique canadienne. »
L'Entente de collaboration Canada—Colombie-Britannique en matière de langues officielles appuiera
l'élaboration et la mise en œuvre de mesures concrètes afin de rehausser la capacité de la province à offrir des services
à la communauté francophone dans des secteurs prioritaires.
« Depuis 2001, le gouvernement de la Colombie-Britannique déploie de multiples efforts pour stimuler la
vitalité de notre communauté francophone en créant ou en améliorant les services offerts en français dans des secteurs
clés, a expliqué le ministre van Dongen. Je suis heureux de travailler de concert avec le gouvernement fédéral afin de
continuer à accroître notre capacité d’offrir des services à notre communauté francophone. »
En vertu de cette entente, le gouvernement de la Colombie-Britannique a élaboré un plan stratégique
pluriannuel qui comporte deux objectifs, à savoir : rehausser la capacité du Programme des affaires francophones de
la Colombie-Britannique à appuyer les agences et les ministères de la province, ainsi que soutenir l'élaboration, la
planification et la mise en œuvre de services dans les secteurs prioritaires de la santé, du développement économique,
des services sociaux, de la justice, des communications, de l'information et des consultations.
