Objectifs
How to read and write scientific documents in view of being published in an international review or
conference. Emphasis will be put on avoiding the most common mistakes and pitfalls met by the
researcher when communication in English.
Content and method
The first assignment will deal with the most common mistakes French researchers make when writing
a paper namely:
 Numeracy, charts and graphs (problems with numbers)
 Punctuation (communicating clearly and concisely, avoiding ambiguity)
 Basic English sentence structure (avoiding split infinitives and clumsy adverbs)
 Verb tenses, prepositions, articles, mass nouns (using the right tense in the right situation)
 Anaphora (using words referring back to others in a document, a source of confusion and
ambiguity)
The second assignment will concern the drafting of a scientific article in order to make it publishable
for an English review. We will discuss the following points:
 Structure of a scientific paper (the IMRAD format and how to adapt it to the specificities of an
international journal)
 Dealing with the abstract, introduction, method, results, discussion, headings, bibliography,
webography (here we will study what is expected of a writer in each section of the article)
Exercises will allow researchers to practice and assimilate each part of the course. Examples of
papers will be given including ones with typical errors. An exam will be given at the end to test and
assess the acquisition of knowledge.
