Two years ago, when first exhibiting at Galerie d’(A), Eric Martinet claimed that painting had made its way
into his work by ‘breaking in”, as an extension of the numerous drawings kept in his sketchbooks. Today,
painting is at the heart of his thought process, “as though coming to the rescue of drawing”. It is a medium
that allows him to distance himself from “a realism that could only offer anecdotes” by approaching reality
through a wave of brilliant colours. Like a screenplay director, he assembles and opens up dialogues
between buildings, mountains and changing skies.
Eric Martinet goes to the heart of the matter; he subjects space and object to painting by dematerialising
them. Monuments are reduced to a few recognisable elements, and backgrounds are emphasised with
solid blocks of bold, shimmering colour.
Meanwhile, the sketchbooks continue to pile up. Repositories for the initial spark of inspiration, they supply
the life blood for paintings and prints in a state of cheerful confusion, and can even sometimes be found
enclosed in a frame… Like that one, which, while affirming its status as a precious object, ironically flanks
the canvases it accompanies in The Conquest of the West.
Born in 1962 in Vallorbe (Switzerland), Eric Martinet graduated from the Ecole Cantonale d’Art de Lausanne (Lausanne
Cantonal School of Art). From 2004 to 2009, he was Chairman of the Vaud section of the visual arts association
VISARTE (Switzerland). In 2011, he founded the association “Vie Art Cité” and is in charge of its publications. This
association focuses on promoting the activities of the art world in French-speaking Switzerland in all its forms:
architecture, fine and visual arts, opera, music and the art and profession of writing books. Martinet is a member of
Visarte Vaud and also teaches at the Gymnase de Chamblandes secondary school and at Eracom (The arts of
communication school for French-speaking Switzerland). The artist lives in Lausanne.
