Taylor graduated from the University of Toronto in 1978 with an Honours Bachelor of Science in Physics. After spending 2
years teaching Science in Papua New Guinea with CUSO, he settled into a career developing software for scientific and
engineering applications. This led to a specialization in safety critical software primarily with the Canadian Nuclear Safety
Commission (then known as AECB) but also with WorldHeart Corporation and BAE Systems. After a tedious year helping
to stomp out Y2K bugs, Mr. Taylor decided to leave the world of software and become a high school teacher. Since
September 2001 he has taught in the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board, primarily teaching senior Physics, but also
some junior Science, Math and Computer Science. In 2005 and again in 2009 Mr. Taylor attended training sessions at the
Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics (PI) and has led many workshops for high school teachers promoting the PI
Outreach Programme, and in association with the Ontario Association of Physics Teachers. Mr. Taylor’s current interests
are in trying to help high school Physics students make better use of computers both in lab experiments and in
simulations of theory.

Richard Taylor termine son baccalauréat ès sciences avec spécialisation en physique à l’Université de Toronto en 1978.
Après deux années d’enseignement des sciences en Papouasie-Nouvelle Guinée avec le Service universitaire canadien
outre-mer, il se consacre aux logiciels de perfectionnement professionnel pour applications scientifiques et techniques, ce
qui l’amène à se spécialiser dans les logiciels essentiels à la sécurité, principalement à la Commission canadienne de
sûreté nucléaire (alors appelée Commission de contrôle de l’énergie atomique), mais aussi à la WorldHeart Corporation
et à BAE Systems. Après une année fastidieuse passée à régler le bogue de l’an 2000, M.Taylor décide de délaisser le
monde des logiciels et se fait enseignant au secondaire. Depuis septembre 2001, il est professeur au Conseil scolaire du
district d’Ottawa-Carleton, enseignant surtout la physique de dernier niveau, mais aussi les sciences, les mathématiques
et l’informatique au primaire. En 2005 et à nouveau en 2009, M.Taylor prend part à des séances de formation à l’Institut
Perimeter pour la physique théorique (PI) et il donne aux enseignants du secondaire de nombreux ateliers vantant le
Programme de liaison du PI, de concert avec l’Ontario Association of Physics Teachers. M. Taylor s’emploie actuellement
à aider les étudiants du secondaire en physique à faire un meilleur usage de l’ordinateur dans les expériences de
laboratoire et les simulations théoriques.
