«Cornel Brudascu est le maitre méconnu de ce que l’on nomme
désormais «l’Ecole de Cluj”. L’aura de sa peinture a imprégné une
jeune génération d’artistes dont je fais partie et qui jouit de cette
nouvelle visibilité offerte à la scène artistique roumaine.
«Cornel Brudascu is the unacknowledged master of what has come
to be termed the Cluj School. The aura of his painting impregnated
a younger generation of artists, including myself, who revel in the
visibility now offered to Romania’s art scene.
Alors que tous contacts avec l’Occident étaient interdits dans la
Roumanie des années 1970, il réalise des peintures à l’esthétique
pop qui font de lui un des seuls artistes roumains associés au
mouvement pop-art. En s’inspirant de photographies ou autres
articles récupérés dans des magazines venus illégalement
des Etats-Unis, de France ou d’ailleurs, il peint notamment des
musiciens aux couleurs pop acidulées comme le “Guitariste”
qui a été présentée dans l’exposition “The World Goes Pop” au
Tate Modern en 2015. Réalistes et libres, ces peintures réalisées
sous l’ère Nicolae Ceausescu résonnent comme un pied-de-nez
à ce dictateur auquel il n’avait pas pu refuser la réalisation d’un
portrait.
Brudascu’s pop-inspired paintings from the 1970s, when contact
with the West was banned, today make him one of the few
Romanian artists associated with pop art. Drawing on photos
and articles garnered from magazines slipped into the country
from America, France or elsewhere, he produced vividly colored
paintings, particularly of musicians, such as The Guitarist, which
featured in the Tate Modern’s 2015 The World Goes Pop exhibit.
Realist and free, these paintings from the Nicolae Ceausescu era
resonate like a slap in the face of the dictator, whose portrait
Brudascu dared not refuse to paint.
Aujourd’hui, alors que d’autres artistes s’attèlent à dépeindre
mythologies personnelles et sujets socio-historiques, Brudascu
s’autorise quant à lui à travailler des sujets classiques : fleurs,
paysages, portraits et nus. Pour sa première exposition parisienne,
l’artiste présente une série inédite nourrie par la poésie et le rêve
abordant des sujets intimes de façon très radicale compte tenu du
contexte dans lequel il évolue. L’érotisme gay prend ici la forme
d’une danse florale qui marque par sa frontalité et peinte avec
une vitalité rarement dévoilée par un maitre dont la discrétion n’a
d’égal que le nombre de peintres qu’il a pu influencer.»
Now, while other artists focus on depicting personal mythologies
and socio-historical subjects, Brudascu permits himself the
exploration of classical themes: flowers, landscapes, portraits and
nudes. For his first exhibition in Paris, the artist presents a series of
previously unseen works nurtured by poetry and dreams, dealing
with intimate subjects in an extremely radical manner considering
the context in which he practices. Here, gay eroticism takes the
form of a strikingly frontal, floral dance, painted with outstanding
vitality by a master whose discretion is matched only by the sheer
number of painters he has influenced.»
