Montreal, October 7, 2011 – The Italian Chamber of Commerce in Canada (ICAC) is delighted with the
success of a luncheon it held during the Montreal visit of Mr. Sergio Marchionne, President and CEO of
Chrysler LLC and Managing Director and General Manager Fiat S.p.A.
In this rare visit to Quebec, Mr. Marchionne took stock of the Fiat-Chrysler partnership to date,
highlighted the success of the Fiat 500 in the Canadian market and looked towards the future in a
speech entitled, “The future of the automobile industry: leadership and innovation, accelerated speed
towards growth.” He delivered his speech to an audience of more than 500 business people in Montreal.
The Chamber made no attempt to hide its desire to take advantage of this prestigious visit to Montreal
to promote the exceptional knowledge and capacity for innovation in Quebec, particularly with regards
to the advanced transportation and public transit sectors.
“Quebec stands out thanks to its leadership in research and development and is home to renowned
research centres in the field of transportation. We want to showcase this expertise and, in the process,
promote the establishment of strategic alliances following this event,” said Albert De Luca, president of
the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Canada.

Le grand patron de Fiat à Montréal : vers de nouvelles collaborations
d’affaires entre le Québec et l’Italie
Montréal, le 7 octobre 2011 – La Chambre de commerce italienne au Canada (CCIC) s’est réjouie du
succès remporté par la venue à Montréal de M. Sergio Marchionne, président et directeur général de
Groupe Chrysler LLC et administrateur délégué et directeur général de Fiat S.p.A. dans le cadre d’un
déjeuner-conférence de la Chambre.
Lors d’un rare séjour au Québec, devant un parterre de plus de 500 gens d’affaires montréalais, dans un
discours intitulé « Le futur de l’industrie automobile : leadership et innovation, en vitesse accélérée vers
la croissance », M. Marchionne a dressé le bilan de l’association Fiat-Chrysler à ce jour, souligné le
succès que connaît la Fiat 500 sur le marché canadien et présenté ses perspectives d’avenir.
À cet égard, la Chambre n’a pas caché sa volonté de profiter de cette prestigieuse visite en sol
montréalais pour promouvoir le savoir-faire et la capacité d’innovation exceptionnelle du Québec,
notamment en matière de transport avancé et de transport en commun.
« Le Québec s’illustre par son leadership au niveau de la recherche et du développement et abrite des
centres de recherche réputés dans le domaine du transport. Nous souhaitons faire miroiter cette
expertise et, dans la foulée, favoriser l’établissement d’alliances stratégiques à la suite de
l’événement », a affirmé Albert De Luca, président de la Chambre de commerce italienne au Canada.
« Fidèle à sa mission, la Chambre compte miser sur son réseau - qui s’étend sur les deux continents –
afin de promouvoir les investissements et les échanges commerciaux avec l’Italie. »

Nato in Italia, cresciuto e formatosi in Canada,
Marchionne ha la doppia cittadinanza italiana e
canadese. A partire dal 2004 ha preso le redini
della Fiat dove ha effettuato un ribaltamento di
situazione tra i più impressionanti dell’industria
automobilistica recente, riportando il costruttore
italiano alla redditività in meno di due anni. Nel
momento in cui Chrysler viene salvata dal
“Capitolo 11” della legge americana, nel giugno
2009, Sergio Marchionne è nominato direttore
generale della nuova società appena formata, la
Chrysler Group LLC, prima di essere eletto
presidente della stessa nel settembre 2011. Ha
portato alla compagnia la visione d’affari e l’esperienza necessaria per affrontare il mercato
automobilistico nordamericano. La sua leadership ha permesso di raddrizzare la situazione
finanziaria della compagnia che ha registrato una cifra d’affari positiva nel primo trimestre di
quest’anno, ed è stato un elemento chiave per il ritorno della Fiat in America del Nord dopo
un’assenza di quasi 25 anni.

MONTRÉAL - Les Européens devraient suivre l'exemple de l'industrie automobile nord-américaine, qui va
de mieux en mieux depuis qu'elle a éliminé la capacité de production excédentaire qui limitait sa
croissance, a affirmé vendredi le PDG de Chrysler et de Fiat.
Devant un auditoire du milieu des affaires montréalais, Sergio Marchionne a affirmé que le plan de
sauvetage orchestré par Ottawa et Washington en 2009 avait fourni à l'industrie une occasion de s'attaquer
à son problème chronique de surproduction.
«Au Canada et aux États-Unis, la capacité excédentaire de production n'est plus un problème. Nous nous
sommes débarrassé de chaque once de capacité inutile», a affirmé M. Marchionne devant la Chambre de
commerce italienne au Canada.
«En travaillant conjointement, l'industrie, les gouvernements et les syndicats ont résolu les problèmes
structurels qui ont handicapé le secteur pendant longtemps.»
Quelque 86 millions de véhicules sont construits chaque année, au moins 20 ou 25 millions de plus que la
capacité réaliste du marché, a-t-il ajouté. M. Marchionne a affirmé que l'Europe n'avait pas encore réussi à
s'attaquer à ce problème et refusait d'accepter que la concurrence dépassait à présent les frontières
nationales.
Plutôt que de procéder à une restructuration radicale, les gouvernements européens ont fourni un soutien
financier direct à leurs constructeurs automobiles nationaux en contravention claire du Traité de Rome,
fondateur de la Communauté économique européenne, a-t-il continué.
Mais le temps file pour les constructeurs européens. Le PDG de Chrysler et de Fiat a appelé les leaders
industriels et politiques du vieux continent à s'attaquer très rapidement au manque de compétitivité de leur
industrie.

Tout en défendant le libre-marché, Sergio Marchionne a aussi admis vendredi avoir eu à défendre l'aide
financière publique dirigée vers son secteur depuis deux ans et demi.
«Sans intervention extérieure, l'effondrement presque inévitable de l'industrie aurait été irréversible, avec
des conséquences graves pour des centaines de milliers de familles et le système économique en entier»,
a-t-il affirmé.
M. Marchionne a aussi prédit qu'à terme, cinq joueurs mondiaux demeureront sur le marché de l'automobile
et que leur survie dépendra de leur collaboration interne.
Ni Fiat ni Chrysler n'aurait pu survivre seul à la crise économique, selon lui. Début 2009, Chrysler perdait
presque un milliard de dollars par mois et Fiat était trop petite et trop handicapée par un mauvais plan
d'affaires pour l'Europe.
Ensemble, elles ont vendu presque 4,2 millions d'autos sur la planète cette année, faisant de l'entreprise le
cinquième joueur mondial du secteur.
D'ici 2014, les ventes annuelles devraient passer à 5,9 millions de véhicules, selon Sergio Marchionne.

Le président de Chrysler et de Fiat, Sergio Marchionne, veut rendre les syndicats plus
responsables de leur comportement et les intéresser davantage au rendement de l’entreprise.
C’est ce qu’il a indiqué vendredi, lors d’un passage
devant la Chambre de commerce italienne au Canada
à Montréal.
«Une des grandes erreurs qu’a commise l’industrie
automobile, c’est de penser qu’on devait donner
toujours garantir les mêmes conditions de travail à nos
employés, peu importe l’état de l’économie et des
ventes de voitures», a-t-il dit.

M. Marchionne a plaidé pour une plus grande flexibilité
dans les conditions de travail, qui serait assortie d’une
plus grande participation aux bénéfices de l’entreprise,
quand les choses s’améliorent.
«Si l’entreprise et l’économie vont bien, nous devrions pouvoir récompenser les employés dans une
plus grande proportion. Si ça va mal, nous devrions pouvoir avoir plus de flexibilité», a-t-il dit,
ajoutant qu’il pousserait très fort pour que des modifications soient apportées dans les relations de
travail, notamment en Italie.
M. Marchionne a souligné que le passage près de la mort de Chrysler en 2008-2009 et les
difficultés de Fiat quelques années plus tôt avaient changé pour toujours la mentalité de la direction
de l’entreprise. «Nous sommes des survivants et les survivants ont une façon bien particulière
d’appréhender le monde», a-t-il mentionné.
Il a indiqué que Fiat avait maintenant le pouvoir de refuser son consentement. «Ce pouvoir
s’accompagne d’une obligation à refuser de consentir à notre déclin, à la négligence industrielle et
au gaspillage», a-t-il mentionné.

Lors de la rencontre avec des gens d'affaires montréalais, M. Marchionne a souligné le leadership
du Québec en matière de transport avancé et de transport en commun.
Il a indiqué que ce qui se faisait au Québec pour promouvoir la voiture électrique était «plutôt
unique» bien que l’avènement de la voiture électrique pour un marché de masse ne soit pas pour
demain, selon lui, en raison de défis d’ordre technique.
M. Marchionne a salué le fait que les pouvoirs publics québécois, plutôt que l’industrie automobile,
prennent les risques et assument les coûts dans le développement d’une infrastructure de
chargement.
«Les constructeurs d’automobiles ne sont pas obligés par la loi de se convertir rapidement à
l’électricité ou d’assumer l’entière responsabilité de la solution du problème», a-t-il rappelé.
Selon M. Marchionne, la propulsion électrique fait partie de l’avenir à long terme de l’industrie
automobile. Mais, la voiture hybride a plus d’avenir que la voiture électrique pure en raison des
contraintes technologiques.
«Même dans dix ans, les véhicules électriques n’occuperont pas plus de cinq pour cent du
marché», a-t-il prédit.

Le Québec est un exemple à suivre pour sa manière de
déployer des infrastructures pour voitures électriques,
estime le grand patron de Fiat-Chrysler, Sergio
Marchionne, lors d'un passage à Montréal, hier. Il a
toutefois prévenu qu'il faudra des années avant que
ces véhicules sans émissions se taillent une place
significative sur nos routes.
Le chef de direction de Fiat-Chrysler, qui a étudié à Toronto et qui
détient la double citoyenneté canadienne et italienne, a pris la
parole devant des centaines de gens d'affaires réunis par la
Chambre de commerce italienne au Canada. Il a profité de
l'occasion pour louanger les efforts déployés par le Québec pour
favoriser l'arrivée des voitures électriques. Selon lui, les
gouvernements devront absolument donner leur appui à cette
nouvelle technologie pour qu'elle puisse gagner des parts de
marché.

Sergio Marchionne se dit convaincu que l'électricité est appelée à
jouer un rôle plus important dans la propulsion des voitures d'ici

L’industrie mondiale de l’automobile affiche une importante surcapacité de production, déplore Sergio
Marchionne, président du conseil et pdg de Chrysler, et pdg de Fiat.
«Globalement, la capacité de production est d’environ 96 millions de véhicules par année, ce qui
représente de 20 à 25 millions de véhicules de plus que ce que le marché peut absorber de façon
réaliste», a-t-il dit ce midi, devant la Chambre de commerce italienne au Canada, à Montréal.
En juillet 2011, la Banque Scotia a publié un rapport soulignant que les ventes de voitures à l'échelle
mondiale ont grimpé de 5 % pendant la première moitié de 2011, malgré la crise en Europe et le prix
élevé du baril de pétrole. L’institution s’attendait même à une accélération des ventes au second
semestre de 2011.
Le célèbre homme d’affaires, né en Italie mais qui a fait ses études postsecondaires au Canada,
précise toutefois que l’Amérique du Nord n’a pas ce problème de surcapacité. «Nous avons retiré du
système chaque once de capacité superflue!»

«Leur succès, dit-il, sera basé sur l’optimisation des investissements par le partage d’architectures et
de groupes motopropulseurs à l’échelle globale, et la maximisation des effets multiplicateurs par région
par une gestion globale coordonnée.»
Sergio Marchionne estime que pour «générer des profits» à long terme un constructeur automobile doit
produire au moins six millions de véhicules par année. Il précise toutefois que le volume de production
par architecture (ou par modèle) est plus important que le volume absolu, et ce, en raison des
économies d’échelle.
En 2011, Fiat et Chrysler devraient vendre 4,2 millions de véhicules. Et d’ici trois ans, le groupe
de Sergio Marchionne prévoit porter cette production à 5,9 millions d’automobiles par année.

Les Européens devraient suivre l’exemple de l’industrie automobile nordaméricaine, qui va de mieux en mieux depuis qu’elle a éliminé la capacité de
production excédentaire qui limitait sa croissance, a affirmé vendredi Sergio
Marchionne, le PDG de Chrysler et de Fiat, devant des membres de la Chambre de
commerce italienne du Canada, à Montréal.
Même s’il se fait l’apôtre du libre marché, M. Marchionne estime que les plans de
sauvetage de l’industrie automobile des gouvernements canadien et américain en

MONTREAL _ Western automakers can only compete with eventual low-cost
Chinese rivals by reducing labour costs and standardizing platforms and parts,
the CEO of Chrysler and Fiat said Friday.
Sergio Marchionne said it is no longer sustainable for unionized workers to be paid
using the current formula for steady pay increases no matter how poorly a
company is performing.
"We need to introduce a viable, significant portion of overall compensation to our
workers that reflects how well the business is doing," he said during a news
conference after speaking to a Montreal business group.
"And if the business is doing really well, they ought to be overly compensated for
what's going on."
He said the single biggest driver of cost reduction, however, is standardizing the
automobile architecture, powertrains and components. That includes heating and air
conditioning systems, suspensions and other large parts of a vehicle.
Marchionne said he hopes a new collective agreement can be reached with workers
in the United States in the coming days without resorting to binding arbitration.
Workers gave up the right to strike as part of Chrysler's bankruptcy restructuring in
2009.
The UAW reached agreement this week with Ford Motor Co. that gives veteran
workers at least US$16,000 in bonuses. The deal with General Motors was slightly
less generous.
Given its own financial predicament, the agreements "may be overly generous at
least at the beginning phase of the process," he told reporters.
Chrysler, the smallest of the so-called Detroit Big Three, is in a more precarious
financial position.
In May, it repaid US$7.6 billion of loans to governments in Canada and the United
States, six months ahead of schedule.
Marchionne predicted that the number of global automotive companies will
eventually shrink to five or six giants, including potentially several from China.
Western manufacturers need to adapt their scale to effectively compete with
Chinese-owned rivals that will have huge domestic markets and low marginal costs.
"As a producer, you cannot be small and cute and compete, you're going to get
killed."
He said western companies need to get their act together before Chinese
manufacturers begin to target Europe and North American motorists.
"It's a great future if we know how to manage it, if we butcher this it will be very
painful," he said in response to audience questions after his speech to the Italian
Chamber of Commerce of Canada.

charging grid.
He said such efforts can't be left to car companies, which neither have the means
nor the wherewithal.
Vehicle electricification will eventually come in some form, although he believes a
hybrid offering is most likely because of the limited application and costs of
completely electric cars, he told reporters.
Marchionne said Fiat's Iveco Irisbus is also in discussions with Montreal to test a
hybrid business.
Earlier, Marchionne said European car companies should follow the example of
North America's automotive industry, which is on the path to recovery after
removing excess capacity that hindered its growth.
Marchionne said bailouts by the Canadian and U.S. governments in 2009 provided
the industry an opportunity to tackle the chronic problem of production
overcapacity.
"In Canada and in the U.S., overcapacity is no longer a problem. We have taken
every ounce of unnecessary capacity out of the system," he said.
By working together, industry, governments and trade unions helped to overcome
the structural impediments that have long dragged down the sector.
About 96 million vehicles are built annually, at least 20 million to 25 million more
than the market can realistically digest, he said.
Meanwhile, Marchionne@said Europe has unfortunately not come to grips with
inefficiencies to accept that the realities of competition go beyond national borders.
Instead of radical restructuring, European governments have provided direct
financial support to national players in a blatant contravention of the Treaty of
Rome, which established the European Economic Community, he said.
Marchionne says time is running out for European carmakers which will record this
year the lowest growth since 1982.
Although an advocate of the free market, Marchionne said he's had to defend
government funding over the past 21/2 years.
"Without intervention from elsewhere, the almost inevitable collapse of the
industrial sector would have been irreversible with obvious consequences for
hundreds of thousands of families and the economy as a whole."
Neither Fiat nor Chrysler would have made it on their own, Marchionne said.
Together they are going to sell nearly 4.2 million cars this year, making it the fifth
largest automaker in the world.
By 2014, that number should reach 5.9 million units.

DETROIT/MONTREAL (Reuters) - The United Auto Workers union has summoned local officials representing some
26,000 Chrysler Group LLC workers to Detroit as contract talks with the No. 3 U.S. automaker near a turning point.
Chrysler Chief Executive Sergio Marchionne said on Friday that he expected bargaining on a new four-year deal on
wages and benefits to intensify over the next three to four days.

Separately, the UAW summoned union presidents representing local bargaining units to Detroit for a Monday update
on the contract talks, a person briefed on the plan said.
Typically the UAW leadership only summons the bargaining council representing to meet when they have a tentative
contract to present to local officials.

But the union's talks with Chrysler have been the most strained of its contract talks with any of the Detroit automakers
in the current round of negotiations, and there was no indication of new progress on Friday.

Talks between the two sides have been underway since July but stalled last month over Chrysler's push to seek a
more concessionary labor deal than the union was willing to give its larger rivals, General Motors Co and Ford Motor
Co.
"Progress has been made. However, key issues are still being discussed," Holiefield said in a memo.

Separately, Marchionne, speaking to the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Montreal, said he expected Chrysler to
reach a deal with the union and avoid arbitration, but he challenged the precedent set in contract agreements with
General Motors Co and Ford Motor Co.
Earlier this week, the UAW and Ford reached a tentative four-year contract that allows veteran workers to get at least
$16,000 in bonuses. Last week, UAW workers at GM ratified a slightly less generous labor contract.

MONTREAL - The CEO of Chrysler and Fiat told businessmen in Montreal on
Friday that the working conditions of auto workers should be contingent on the
performance of their company.
Sergio Marchionne made the comments in a speech about the future of the auto
industry to the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Canada.

"One of the big errors that the auto industry committed," he said, "was to think
that it should guarantee working conditions for employees, regardless of the
state of the economy or car sales."
Marchionne said auto workers' working conditions need to be more flexible.
"If the company and the economy are going well, then we should be able to pay
workers more," he said. "If things are going bad, we should be able to have
more flexibility."
He said he'll push hard for these labour reforms, particularly in Italy.
Chrysler's brush with bankruptcy in 2008-09 and Fiat's financial troubles a few
years prior forever changed the company's mentality, he said.
"We are survivors," he said. "And survivors have a particular way of seeing the
world."
Marchionne's speech also touched on the future of the electric car.

Marchionne also applauded the fact that the government - rather than auto
companies - is financing and taking the risk in developing the infrastructure for
electric vehicles.

Le PDG de Chrysler et de Fiat, Sergio Marchionne, à Montréal, le 7 octobre
Les Européens devraient suivre l'exemple de l'industrie automobile nord-américaine, qui
va de mieux en mieux depuis qu'elle a éliminé la capacité de production excédentaire qui
limitait sa croissance, a affirmé vendredi Sergio Marchionne, le PDG de Chrysler et de
Fiat, devant des membres de la Chambre de commerce italienne du Canada, à Montréal.
Même s'il se fait l'apôtre du libre marché, M. Marchionne estime que les plans de
sauvetage de l'industrie automobile des gouvernements canadien et américain en 2009
étaient nécessaires et ont permis d'éliminer entièrement cette capacité de production
excédentaire.
Selon lui, en travaillant ensemble, l'industrie, le gouvernement et les travailleurs ont
réussi à enrayer un frein structurel à la croissance.
M. Marchionne estime par ailleurs que le secteur automobile européen manque de
compétitivité. Au lieu de restructurer le secteur, les gouvernements européens
continuent de donner des subventions à des constructeurs nationaux sans se soucier du
traité de Rome, fondement de la Communauté économique européenne. Il exhorte les
dirigeants européens à changer leurs façons de faire.
Selon lui, le marché de l'automobile sera dominé par seulement cinq fabricants dans les
années à venir. Ceux-ci devront inévitablement partager leurs savoirs dans une stratégie
de gestion coordonnée mondiale.
Par ailleurs, M. Marchionne soutient que Chrysler tentera d'en arriver bientôt à la
signature d'un nouveau contrat de travail avec ses employés américains sans recourir à
un arbitre, mais que ce contrat sera moins généreux que ceux qu'ont obtenus
récemment les travailleurs américains de Ford et de GM.
Chrysler, le plus petit des trois constructeurs américains, est dans une situation
financière plus précaire que ses concurrents.

M. Marchionne a rappelé que Chrysler lancera une Fiat 500 électrique l'an prochain. Il a
du même coup félicité le Québec pour sa politique d'avant garde en matière de
transport électrique, notamment l'installation d'un réseau de stations de recharge pour

Gérer la capacité c'est la job des gestionnaires, alors s'il y avait capacité
excédentaire, c'est que les gestionnaires n'ont pas fait leur travail.
Une usine de voitures, ça ne se gère pas à l'improviste, retournez à l'école et
arrêtez de blâmer les syndicats pour ci ou ça.
Si vos salaires sont plus bas que les autres, vous n'attirez pas les meilleurs
employés et nos dirigeants politiques devraient fortement questionner la pertinence
de vous verser des subventions si votre compétitivité n'est pas basée sur la
technologie et l'efficacité de l'usine, mais sur l'avantage d'une rémunération plus
basse.

Devant un auditoire du milieu des affaires montréalais, Sergio
Marchionne a affirmé que le plan de sauvetage orchestré par Ottawa et
Washington en 2009 avait fourni à l'industrie une occasion de s'attaquer
à son problème chronique de surproduction.
«Au Canada et aux États-Unis, la capacité excédentaire de production
n'est plus un problème. Nous nous sommes débarrassé de chaque once
de capacité inutile», a affirmé M. Marchionne devant la Chambre de
commerce italienne au Canada.
«En travaillant conjointement, l'industrie, les gouvernements et les
syndicats ont résolu les problèmes structurels qui ont handicapé le
secteur pendant longtemps.»

à s'attaquer à ce problème et refusait d'accepter que la concurrence
dépassait à présent les frontières nationales.
Plutôt que de procéder à une restructuration radicale, les
gouvernements européens ont fourni un soutien financier direct à leurs
constructeurs automobiles nationaux en contravention claire du Traité de
Rome, fondateur de la Communauté économique européenne, a-t-il
continué.
Mais le temps file pour les constructeurs européens. Le PDG de Chrysler
et de Fiat a appelé les leaders industriels et politiques du vieux continent
à s'attaquer très rapidement au manque de compétitivité de leur
industrie.
Tout en défendant le libre-marché, Sergio Marchionne a aussi admis
vendredi avoir eu à défendre l'aide financière publique dirigée vers son
secteur depuis deux ans et demi.
«Sans intervention extérieure, l'effondrement presque inévitable de
l'industrie aurait été irréversible, avec des conséquences graves pour
des centaines de milliers de familles et le système économique en
entier», a-t-il affirmé.
M. Marchionne a aussi prédit qu'à terme, cinq joueurs mondiaux
demeureront sur le marché de l'automobile et que leur survie dépendra
de leur collaboration interne.
Ni Fiat ni Chrysler n'aurait pu survivre seul à la crise économique, selon
lui. Début 2009, Chrysler perdait presque un milliard de dollars par mois
et Fiat était trop petite et trop handicapée par un mauvais plan d'affaires
pour l'Europe.
Ensemble, elles ont vendu presque 4,2 millions d'autos sur la planète
cette année, faisant de l'entreprise le cinquième joueur mondial du
secteur.
D'ici 2014, les ventes annuelles devraient passer à 5,9 millions de
véhicules, selon Sergio Marchionne.

This week, the UAW and Ford Motor Co. reached a tentative four-year
contract that allows veteran workers to get at least $16,000 in bonuses.
Last week, UAW workers at General Motors Co. ratified a slightly less
generous labour contract.
Chrysler, the smallest of the Detroit automakers, is under more pressure
to hold the line on costs because its finances are more precarious.
“Some of the deals that we’ve seen being signed between Ford and GM

MONTREAL — Europe should follow the example of North America's automotive industry, which

MONTREAL — Europe should follow the example of North America’s automotive industry, which is on the

and Fiat said Friday.

“In Canada and in the U.S., overcapacity is no longer a problem. We have taken every ounce of
unnecessary capacity out of the system,” Marchionne told the Italian Chamber of Commerce of Canada.

Neither Fiat nor Chrysler would have made it on their own, Marchionne said
In the early part of 2009, Chrysler was losing almost $1 billion a month while Fiat was too small and too
handicapped by an inadequate business model in Europe.
Together they are going to sell nearly 4.2 million cars this year, making it the fifth largest automaker in the
world.
By 2014 that number should reach 5.9 million units.

Le président de Chrysler et de Fiat, Sergio Marchionne, veut rendre
les syndicats plus responsables de leur comportement et les
intéresser davantage au rendement de l'entreprise.
C'est ce qu'il a indiqué vendredi, lors d'un passage devant la
Chambre de commerce italienne au Canada à Montréal.
«Une des grandes erreurs qu'a commises l'industrie automobile,
c'est de penser qu'on devait donner toujours garantir les mêmes
conditions de travail à nos employés, peu importe l'état de
l'économie et des ventes de voitures», a-t-il dit.
M. Marchionne a plaidé pour une plus grande flexibilité dans les
conditions de travail, qui serait assortie d'une plus grande
participation aux bénéfices de l'entreprise, quand les choses
s'améliorent.
«Si l'entreprise et l'économie vont bien, nous devrions pouvoir
récompenser les employés dans une plus grande proportion. Si ça va
mal, nous devrions pouvoir avoir plus de flexibilité», a-t-il dit, ajoutant
qu'il pousserait très fort pour que des modifications soient apportées
dans les relations de travail, notamment en Italie.
M. Marchionne a souligné que le passage près de la mort de
Chrysler en 2008-2009 et les difficultés de Fiat quelques années plus
tôt avaient changé pour toujours la mentalité de la direction de
l'entreprise. «Nous sommes des survivants et les survivants ont une
façon bien particulière d'appréhender le monde», a-t-il mentionné.

consentement. «Ce pouvoir s'accompagne d'une obligation à refuser
de consentir à notre déclin, à la négligence industrielle et au
gaspillage», a-t-il mentionné.
Unique au Québec
Par ailleurs, à l'occasion de la rencontre avec des gens d'affaires
montréalais, M. Marchionne a souligné le leadership du Québec en
matière de transport avancé et de transport en commun.
Il a indiqué que ce qui se faisait au Québec pour promouvoir la
voiture électrique était «plutôt unique» bien que l'avènement de la
voiture électrique pour un marché de masse ne soit pas pour
demain, selon lui, en raison de défis d'ordre technique.
M. Marchionne a salué le fait que les pouvoirs publics québécois,
plutôt que l'industrie automobile, prennent les risques et assument
les coûts dans le développement d'une infrastructure de chargement.
«Les constructeurs d'automobiles ne sont pas obligés par la loi de se
convertir rapidement à l'électricité ou d'assumer l'entière
responsabilité de la solution du problème», a-t-il rappelé.
Selon M. Marchionne, la propulsion électrique fait partie de l'avenir à
long terme de l'industrie automobile, mais la voiture hybride a plus
d'avenir que la voiture électrique pure en raison des contraintes
technologiques.
«Même dans dix ans, les véhicules électriques n'occuperont pas plus
de cinq pour cent du marché», a-t-il prédit.

MONTREAL - Western automakers can only compete with eventual low-cost Chinese rivals by
reducing labour costs and standardizing platforms and parts, the CEO of Chrysler and Fiat said
Friday.
Sergio Marchionne said it is no longer sustainable for unionized workers to be paid using the
current formula for steady pay increases no matter how poorly a company is performing.
"We need to introduce a viable, significant portion of overall compensation to our workers that
reflects how well the business is doing," he said during a news conference after speaking to a
Montreal business group.
"And if the business is doing really well, they ought to be overly compensated for what's going
on."
He said the single biggest driver of cost reduction, however, is standardizing the automobile
architecture, powertrains and components. That includes heating and air conditioning systems,
suspensions and other large parts of a vehicle.

Marchionne said he hopes a new collective agreement can be reached with workers in the
United States in the coming days without resorting to binding arbitration.
Workers gave up the right to strike as part of Chrysler's bankruptcy restructuring in 2009.
The UAW reached agreement this week with Ford Motor Co. that gives veteran workers at least
US$16,000 in bonuses. The deal with General Motors was slightly less generous.
Given its own financial predicament, the agreements "may be overly generous at least at the
beginning phase of the process," he told reporters.

In May, it repaid US$7.6 billion of loans to governments in Canada and the United States, six
months ahead of schedule.
Marchionne predicted that the number of global automotive companies will eventually shrink to
five or six giants, including potentially several from China.
Western manufacturers need to adapt their scale to effectively compete with Chinese-owned
rivals that will have huge domestic markets and low marginal costs.
"As a producer, you cannot be small and cute and compete, you're going to get killed."
He said western companies need to get their act together before Chinese manufacturers begin
to target Europe and North American motorists.
"It's a great future if we know how to manage it, if we butcher this it will be very painful," he said

Marchionne also applauded efforts in Quebec to establish an electric vehicle charging grid.
He said such efforts can't be left to car companies, which neither have the means nor the
wherewithal.
Vehicle electricification will eventually come in some form, although he believes a hybrid
offering is most likely because of the limited application and costs of completely electric cars,
he told reporters.
Marchionne said Fiat's Iveco Irisbus is also in discussions with Montreal to test a hybrid
business.
Earlier, Marchionne said European car companies should follow the example of North
America's automotive industry, which is on the path to recovery after removing excess capacity
that hindered its growth.
Marchionne said bailouts by the Canadian and U.S. governments in 2009 provided the industry
an opportunity to tackle the chronic problem of production overcapacity.
"In Canada and in the U.S., overcapacity is no longer a problem. We have taken every ounce
of unnecessary capacity out of the system," he said.
About 96 million vehicles are built annually, at least 20 million to 25 million more than the
market can realistically digest, he said.
Meanwhile, Marchionnesaid Europe has unfortunately not come to grips with inefficiencies to
accept that the realities of competition go beyond national borders.

MONTREAL - The CEO of
Chrysler and Fiat told businessmen in Montreal on Friday that the
working conditions of auto workers should be contingent on the
performance of their company.
Sergio Marchionne made the comments in a speech about the future
of the auto industry to the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Canada.
"One of the big errors that the auto industry committed," he said, "was
to think that it should guarantee working conditions for employees,
regardless of the state of the economy or car sales."
Marchionne said auto workers' working conditions need to be more
flexible.
"If the company and the economy are going well, then we should be
able to pay workers more," he said. "If things are going bad, we should
be able to have more flexibility."
Chrysler's brush with bankruptcy in 2008-09 and Fiat's financial
troubles a few years prior forever changed the company's mentality, he
said.

Marchionne also applauded the fact that the government - rather than
auto companies - is financing and taking the risk in developing the
infrastructure for electric vehicles.
"Auto makers are not obliged by law to rapidly convert to electricity or
to assume all the responsibility for the problem," he said.

Hybrid vehicles have more of a future than the electric car because of
technological constraints, he said.
"Even in ten years time, electric cars won't represent more than 5% of
the market," Marchionne predicted.

imposé des exigences. Et Fiat a pris du retard à l’allumage.
Qu’a cela ne tienne, il faut conquérir les Américains et les convaincre
de lâcher leurs gros pick-ups pour la petite icône italienne. Pour ça,
Fiat a embauché Jennifer Lopez. Oui, oui. Une pub télé doit être
diffusée prochainement en Amérique du Nord. On y voit JLo se
balader dans une 500 cabriolet.
Alors, vous êtes séduits ? (Par la 500, je veux dire. Évidemment…)

La 500 doit être retouchée. Par exemple, ses phares pourraient être un peu
plus gros.
Ça me fait penser à la voiture indienne Tata
Pas tant par la voiture que par les belles italiennes autour.

devenue folle avec les années, surtout en regard de la moto.
Aujourd’hui, si j’avais vingt ans et à supposer que le paternel en ait les moyens,
probablement que j’aimerais avoir une petite Fiat. Ces petites autos, comme la
MINI et la New Beetle, ce sont ce que j’appelle des «jouets de gosses de
riches» ou encore, de charmantes deuxièmes autos pour qui en a les moyens
car, côté pratique, on pourra repasser. Je préfère encore mon Honda Element.
Dommage qu’on en ait cessé la production. Je vais devoir «étirer» le mien au
maximum.

Je l’ai conduite pendant 2 semaines dans les petites routes et rues de la
Toscane. Je l’ai trouve fougeuse, elle prennait bien les virages, et il n’y avait
pas de bruit fatiguant quand on conduit les vitres ouvertes (souvent pour ce
type de voiture le vent frappe la vitrine arriere, ce qui resulte en une vibration
fatiguante pour l’oreille). En retard, j’ai fait de l’autoroute et ai bien aime sa
performance.
J’habite a l’exterieur du Canada, mais si je reviens a Montreal, cette voiture
sera a considere. Petite, maniable, fougueuse, et bon espace de rangement …
Très jolie, mais ça demeurre une bébèlle.

Tu as parfaitement raison. Au Québec, je dirais que 95% des gens qui
achètent la Fiat le font pour le fun. C’est le deuxième voir troisième voiture. Cet
auto ne sera pas pratique en hiver.
Pour une tondeuse à gazon…elle est définitivement trop chère.

Laissons ce pot de yaourt à celles et ceux qui suivent les modes…sans se
soucier de la valeur véritable des choses.
J’en ai pas, puis j’en aurai pas… Mais je l’ai essaye et elle est assez
plaisante,la finition interieure tres reussie. Aux USA avec JELO comme porte
parole c’est peu credible, et les gros americains ont besoin de leurs SUV pour
se deplacer…
30% trop chère, 30% trop énergivore pour sa taille et 30% trop prétentieuse.
30% trop risqué, aussi. 30% insuffisament spacieuse. Pas si jolie non plus.
Je passe mon tour , sans effort.
C’est joli comme petite voiture.Et je crois qu’ils ont le toit panoramique, ça c’est
génial…

Toujours selon Marchionne, l’industrie, le gouvernement et les travailleurs

bah l’exemple nord américain, c’est Ford qui vend les bijoux de famille
à Tata, GM qui passe sous chapitre 11 et Chrysler qui se fait bouffer
par Fiat sans que ce dernier ne sorte de capital (juste en apportant de la technologie).
Je crois qu’il y en a qui en ont bien profité des lois européennes concernant la pollution
et la sécurité, sans compter les primes à la casse à chaque fois que ça allait mal (pour
importer des voitures de Pologne qui plus est). Qu’ils fassent gaffe, si on les laisse
tous seuls, ils vont certes importer des chrysler en masse quelques temps, mais les

chinois savent aussi faire des bouses mal assemblées, ou y arriveront bientôt, et là ça
va réclamer des normes euro X.

on peut tjrs tout critiquer, « de l’extérieur », mais l’europe est quand
même le continent où les meilleurs produits sont fabriqués. le défaut
de la qualité est d’être imité, copié. les temps changent et on a plus le droit sur route
d’utiliser les voitures et se servir de la technologie, alors on change son fusil d’épaule.
Les Américains ont tjrs du retard sur la technicité de l’automobile. Les tarifs qu’ils
pratiquent sont normaux , vu que l’ingéniérie n’est pas à la hauteur de Renault, BMW,
citroën. Oui c’est facile de critiquer de l’extérieur. Comment des journalistes puissent se
faire leurrer en comparant des voitures américaines à des autos européennes qui

Il ne faut tout de même pas négliger que nombre
d’équipementiers dans l’automobile viennent des US. Goodyear
est une référence en pneus hivers et pneus sportifs, BorgWarner fournit des
GM se lance dans l’auto-partage avec

GM n’est pas le premier
constructeur automobile à
entrer sur le marché de
l’auto-partage, mais […]
turbo sur le 2.0l tfsi du groupe VAG (les 1ers turbo sur un moteur à injection
directe), Delphi fournit Mercedes, PSA, Kia en rampe commune de dernière
génération, etc, etc
Le 3.5l Ecoboost de Ford n’a pas grand chose à envier aux moteurs européens
(V6, twin turbo, injection directe et 355/365ch), qui plus est, il marche avec un
taux d’octane de seulement 91 (recommandé seulement en dépannage sur les
moteurs équivalents en Europe).

En réponse à certains, beaucoup de constructeurs européens ont été
« mal » à un moment de leur existence et furent aidés par les
Gouvernements locaux, la situations de deux des trois « Big Three » américains est
juste le cas le plus récent. Ford a revendu ses « bijoux de famille » pour se recentrer
sur deux marques car le groupe considère qu’avoir un trop gros portefeuille de
marques est trop risqué et souhaite relancer un Lincoln laissé à l’abandon. Je complète
British F3 à Silverstone: Magnussen, trop tard
la note de MiguelAnge : si le poste de dépense « essence » n’est pas un soucis car
elle n’est pas chère, qu’allez-vous regarder? les tarifs d’entretien et je ne vous
apprendrai pas grand chose en vous disant que l’entretien d’un moteur downsizé (et
pis, diesel) doit coûter bien plus que celui d’une mécanique disons plus « rustique », en
produit (qualité de l’huile par exemple) et en MO. J’ajoute que les USA sont un pays où
les températures sont souvent « extrêmes » : très chaud ou glacial, auxquelles il faut
ajouter neige, sel, sable et routes pas toujours très bien entretenues…Bref des
conditions qui réclament du costaud et pas du « top moderne » dont on ne sait pas
trop si on peut s’y fier.

Les subventions ce n’est pas bien, mieux vaut
de vrais investisseurs !

Ce que le patron de Fiat voulait dire, c’est qu’il faut dégraisser
les effectifs des constructeurs….c’est à dire ceux de Fiat, c’est à
dire faire ce que les constructeurs américains avaient dû faire pendant la crise.
Licencier. Fermer des usines. Réduire les acquis sociaux (salaire, assurance
santé, retraite, etc…)
La dernière fois que Sergio avait voulu toucher aux usines italiennes, ça a fait un
scandale, tant chez les ouvriers (normal!) que chez les politiciens (qui ne veulent
pas froisser les électeurs), et donc avait débouté les plans prévus par Sergio

On se demande comment Marchionne peut envisager, ne serait-ce
qu’une seconde, donner des leçons de conduites aux gouvernements
européens…Il ferait mieux de se concentrer sur sa propre façon de gérer l’empire
automobile dont on lui a confié la direction!
Sans parler la partie de roulette russe dans laquelle il s’est lancé avec le rachat de
Chrysler, moribond depuis des années, il n’a réussi à épater encore personne avec
ses différents plans produits, en particulier pour Lancia et Alfa Romeo. Au pays des
aveugles, les borgnes sont rois, parait-il… Sa gouvernance fera date, hélas!

Chrysler and Fiat said Friday. Sergio Marchionne told a Montreal business group that bailouts
by the Canadian and U.S. governments in 2009 provided the industry an opportunity to
tackle the chronic problem of production overcapacity. "In Canada and in the U.S.,
overcapacity is no longer a problem. We have taken every ounce of unnecessary capacity
out of the system," Mr. Marchionne told the Italian Chamber of Commerce of Canada. By
working together, industry, governments and unions helped overcome the structural
impediments that have long dragged down the sector, he said.

“We need to introduce a viable, significant portion of overall compensation to our workers
that reflects how well the business is doing,” he said during a news conference after
speaking to a Montreal business group.
“And if the business is doing really well, they ought to be overly compensated for what’s
going on.”

Marchionne said he hopes a new collective agreement can be reached in the coming days
with U.S. autoworkers without resorting to binding arbitration.
Workers gave up the right to strike as part of Chrysler’s bankruptcy restructuring in 2009.
The UAW reached an agreement this week with Ford Motor Co. that gives veteran workers
at least $16,000 (U.S.) in bonuses. The deal with General Motors was slightly less
generous.
Given Chrysler’s own financial predicament, the agreements “may be overly generous at
least at the beginning phase of the process,” Marchionne told reporters.

He said western companies must get their act together before Chinese manufacturers begin
to target Europe and North American motorists.
“It’s a great future if we know how to manage it. If we butcher this, it will be very painful,” he
said in response to audience questions after his speech to the Italian Chamber of
Commerce of Canada Friday.
Marchionne also applauded efforts in Quebec to establish a charging grid for electric
vehicles.
Vehicle electricification will eventually come in some form, although he believes a hybrid
offering is most likely owing to the limited application and costs of completely electric cars,
he told reporters.
Marchionne said Fiat’s Iveco Irisbus is also in discussions with Montreal to test a hybrid
business.

De passage à Montréal pour une rare fois, le patron mondial de
Fiat et de Chrysler, Sergio Marchionne, a estimé hier que l'industrie
automobile nord-américaine a fait le ménage et que les pays
européens devraient cesser d'aider directement les constructeurs,
car cela soutient artificiellement le secteur.
Chrysler a récemment fini de rembourser les 7,6 milliards
empruntés à Ottawa et à Washington pendant la crise de 2009.
«Globalement, la capacité de production est d'environ 96 millions
de véhicules par année, soit de 20 à 25 millions de plus que ce
que le marché peut absorber de façon réaliste», a-t-il dit lors
d'une allocution prononcée devant la Chambre de commerce
italienne au Canada. À terme, selon lui, il pourrait ne rester que
«cinq ou six acteurs mondiaux». Né en Italie, M. Marchionne a
émigré au Canada dans son adolescence et possède la double
nationalité.

Et il n'était pas question de tout mélanger! L'Italie et l'Amérique ont chacun leur force et
continueront de refléter leur valeur distinctive qui plaît bien aux gens.
Tous ont, dans leur mémoire, ce qui
est arrivé à Chrysler il y a quelques
années de cela. À deux doigts de la
faillite définitive, la situation ne fut
facile pour personne, encore moins
pour les dirigeants et employés. Mais
avec de la volonté et de l’aide,
l’entreprise est passée au travers et
s’est relevée avec brio. À la tête des
compagnies, en fait le présidentdirecteur général de Chrysler et aussi le président-directeur général de Fiat, il y a Sergio
Marchionne, un grand homme qui, de passage à Montréal, explique ce qui se dessine pour
l’avenir de ces deux compagnies maintenant réunies.
Devant une foule de 500 personnes, Marchionne fait des blagues, est des plus
sympathiques, et raconte ce qui s’est passé pour la compagnie ces dernières années.
« Cette crise majeure a nécessité une quasi-refonte de l’entreprise et une collaboration
remarquable avec le gouvernement », a-t-il expliqué. Bref, c’est ce qui les a sauvés et c’est
un exemple qui devrait être suivi, pense le dirigeant.

Avec le retour à la rentabilité, la crédibilité qui a repris des forces et le renouvellement de la

La philosophie de Marchionne est simple : pour que tout fonctionne à merveille, le symbole
américain Chrysler doit être en harmonie avec le symbole italien Fiat. Ce qu’ils réussissent
fort bien à marier, même si ce n’est pas chose facile. D’un continent à l’autre, la loi n’est pas
la même et la fabrication non plus. Et il n’était pas question de tout mélanger! L’Italie et
l’Amérique ont chacun leur force et continueront de refléter leur valeur distinctive qui plaît
bien aux gens.

excellente idée. Et ce sont deux compagnies qui sont sorties très fortes de l’enfer vécu et
qui regardent l’avenir avec détermination.
Nouveaux modèles
L’électricité
Dans un futur rapproché, la Fiat 500, qui est arrivé au Québec il y a quelques mois, aura
une petite soeur écologique. L’électricité est pour M. Marchionne une solution à long terme
très prometteuse et évidemment, ils entreront eux aussi dans ce processus. Conçue par les
ingénieurs de Chrysler, la Fiat 500 écolo aura donc un groupe motopropulseur 100%
électrique et arrivera au Québec dès l’année 2012.
Évidemment, l’électricité n’est pas encore une méthode de premier plan, le temps de
chargement est long, la capacité des batteries est limitée et les infrastructures pratiquement
inexistantes. « Les experts disent même que dans cinq ans, seulement 5% du marché sera
des voitures électriques, mais l’avancement technologique y est et au fil du temps inondera
certainement l’industrie automobile », explique M. Marchionne.
Aussi, Fiat a de très bonnes relations avec la Ville de Montréal concernant l’autobus hybride
Iveco Irisbus. Ceci serait une étape importante dans le développement des technologies
hybrides dans le domaine des transports publics. Mais rien n’est encore certain.
Marchionne croit que l’avenir réserve une place pour cinq grands joueurs mondiaux. Si l’on
se fie aux résultats actuels, Fiat et Chrysler vendront quelque 4,2 millions de véhicules cette
année, ce qui les place au 5e rang des plus importants constructeurs automobiles au
monde. En 2014, ils devraient atteindre 5,9 millions d’unités. En alliant l’ingénierie, le design,
la gestion et la qualité de fabrication des deux pays, aucun ne doute qu’une des cinq places
sera réservée à Chrysler et Fiat … Du moins, si l’on en croit son dirigeant principal.

WARREN, Mich. - Union leaders from Chrysler plants around the country were told to stay in Detroit
for two more days as negotiations toward a new labour contract continue with the company.
Around 200 local leaders assembled in a Detroit suburb Monday expecting to hear details of a new
four-year contract. But instead, UAW President Bob King and Vice-President General Holiefield said
there was no deal they could recommend to the membership and asked attendees to stick around
until another meeting on Wednesday, according to two officials who attended the meeting. The
officials asked not to be identified because the meeting was private.
UAW spokeswoman Michele Martin said that bargaining will resume Tuesday morning after
negotiators rest from a weekend of near around-the clock bargaining. Neither the union nor the
company would say what's holding up a deal.
By asking the local leaders to stay in Detroit, King is signalling that a deal may be close. But the fact
that there was no deal before Monday's meeting is a sign that the talks have become snagged on
money issues.

Late last week, the union and Chrysler were hung up on how many workers would be paid entrylevel wages and the size of signing bonuses and profit-sharing checks. Entry-level workers make $14
to $16 per hour, about half the pay of a veteran UAW worker.

Chrysler is the last of the Detroit Three without an agreement. Workers at General Motors Co.
approved a new contract late last month. Voting is under way at Ford Motor Co. At both companies,
the union agreed to forego annual pay raises for most workers in favour of profit-sharing checks and
signing bonuses. The companies held their labour costs steady but promised thousands of new union
jobs.
Talks with the UAW are closely watched because they set the pay and benefits for 112,000 auto
workers nationwide, and they set the bar for pay at auto parts suppliers and other manufacturers.
Bargaining continued with Chrysler through the weekend and into Monday morning, spokeswomen
for both sides said.
Sergio Marchionne, CEO of Chrysler and Italian automaker Fiat SpA, said Friday that the GM and
Ford deals — which guarantee thousands of dollars for each worker over four years — may be too
rich for Chrysler. The company, unlike GM and Ford, lost money during the first half of the year.
Marchionne said he hopes a new deal can be reached without resorting to binding arbitration.
Chrysler workers gave up the right to strike over wages under the terms of its 2009 government
bailout, but either side in contract talks can take disputes to an arbitrator.
Gary Chaison, a professor of labour relations at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts, said
Chrysler is likely pushing for a deal that would give significantly less to workers than GM and Ford
did, but the union is worried that such a deal won't be ratified.
"Marchionne needs the union commitment to a settlement to get ratification, but on the other hand,

Marchionne might calculate that an arbitrator would give Chrysler a less expensive deal than the
union would ratify, Chaison said. But other analysts say both sides will want to avoid long and costly
arbitration that will have no guaranteed outcome.
Marchionne has been tough on Fiat's Italian unions, challenging the Italian way of negotiating new
contracts and seeking plant-by-plant deals in a bid for more flexible work rules instead of the
traditional national contracts.
