F.I.S.L.Y. President’s word
Dear landsailors
Dear sailors
It’s an honour to present you the 11th edition
of Fisly News.
As mentioned in Fisly News nr. 10,
improvement of communication in our
landyachting world is very important.
Beside this Fisly News we’ve today a website
that we try to develop continuously with as
main goal to bring you the most actual
information about landyachting in the world.
Beside this we have our Fisly Newsletter and I
want to express our appreciation to all who
collaborate to the 11th issue. But we need
more authors. Don’t hesitate to send us at
least once a year an overview of your major
events before the 15th of August.
To support this communication efforts, we can
announce that Fisly will be supported by
Junghans through sponsoring till 2004. Also
will Junghans be involved in the major
landyachting events till 2004.
They’ve been sponsor at the WC in
Terschelling 2000. They are main sponsor in
this EC 2001 and they will sponsor the WC
2002 in the USA and the EC in Lytham St.
Annes 2002. For 2003 the EC in Belgium and
2004 the WC in Germany is on the agenda.
It’s the first time we make a long-term
commitment with the sponsor and we’re
convinced it will give a very effective incentive
for the development of our sport.
By this way we thank the management of
Junghans for the trust and involvement in
landyachting.
Today we’re at the eve of the EC in France,
organised for the first time on 4 beaches
(Notre Dame de MontS, St.Jean de Monts, St.
Hilaire de Riez, La Barre de Monts). This
makes it possible that pilots of class 7 and 8
will sail in the same championship for the first
time.
We want to thank the organisers for their
efforts and their hospitality, but also the
regional government and the participating
towns for their financial and logistic support.
Finally we thank the commercial sponsors for
their efforts, because without them such an
event can’t be organised.
Anyhow most important are the landsailors.
We hope you enjoy a sportive championship
and wish that the best of you will win in the
spirit of the Olympic idea.
Fair winds !

FRANCE
World championship 2000, Classes 7 and 8 – Portbail, France
The class 7 (speedsail) and class 8 (kitebuggy, para-kart) world championships stood in great conditions at Lindbergh beach near Portbail (department of La Manche, France) from October 31st to November 4th 2000. Holland had decided not to organize the championship at the last moment. Consequently, the competition has been organized only in 4 weeks, thanks to the institutional and private
partners. Involvement: 77 pilots (61 in para-kite and 16 in speedsail) represented 9 countries: Portugal, Italy, Switzerland, England, Belgium, Germany, Netherlands, Denmark and France. Each category has run 8 races in the best conditions. Pilots mostly coming from northern countries have discovered great beaches to practise their activity. Organisation team and inhabitants have offered
them a nice welcoming. therefore, most of them want to come back on holidays in Normandy.
Mr. Eric ENGELBRECHT has appreciated the quality of competitions and the pilots’ skill.
The Team Organisation and sponsors thank very much pilots for their kindness and the show they
have offered.
RESULTS:
Class 8
1. Stephan KNICKMEIER (D)
2. Roland FELLEITER (D)
3. Johny JENSEN (DK)
Class 7

HOLLAND
Organization
The Netherlands Land Yachting Federation
(NSF) is in the process of reorganization. It is
expected that land sailing in our country, after a
long period of no-growth will expand fast the
coming years. A new generation of pilots will
demand a better infrastructure and better training facilities to improve the level of competition.
We have to be prepared. And you, friends from
other European countries be prepared to encounter serious competitors from the Netherlands beaches within a couple of years.
Some developments:
A NSF youth training programme will start in
2002 on Terschelling to be organized by the local club :”De Brandaris”. This, and other training activities will be co-financed on a long-term
basis by JBR, one of the sponsors of the World
Championship 2000.
Land yachting in the Netherlands is as old as it
is in our neighbouring countries. However, as a
serious competitive sport we have not so much
achieved in all those years. There is no tradition in schooling on an advantaged level and
systematic training of competitive pilots. We
hope to change all that and throw more highlevel pilots into the battle than only Eric van der
Rijt, our number one Class 3 sailor.
The islands of Zeeland and Zuid Holland form
the delta in the North Sea of the Rhine and
Meuse rivers. The so-called Deltaworks are a
complex of dikes that close of most of the seaarms between the islands protecting the hinterland for flooding. Alongside those dikes new
beaches have been formed. Some of them,
and some of the original beaches on the islands look to be suitable for land sailing. Probably too small for the large international regatta’s, but good for training and smaller local
events.
At the moment those beaches are only in use
by Class 8 pilots. Virgin beaches for land
yachts. This can not be, of course ! The NSF
will in close cooperation with local parties openup those beaches for our hero’s .
The main party in Zeeland is the yacht charter
company and sailing school of Aquavitesse in
Bruinisse. Aquavitesse, and its director Marco
Verbaaten plan to start shortly a commercial
and professional School for Land Sailing in
Zeeland. They hope to reach their water sailing
customers from Holland and a part of Belgium
and thus promote land sailing in Zeeland. Local
authorities look at this initiative favourably.
They apparently understand the attraction of
the sport for tourism. A matter of concern to the
NSF is how to get control on responsible, safe
and sustainable use of the beaches for land
sailing.
Regatta’s
The most important thing that happened to us
lately was of course the 7th World Championship in October 2000 on the Island of Terschelling. The NSF did have the honour of organizing the European Championship in 1990 and
1995. And now it was the first time to have the
Worlds in our country. Looking back after almost one year now, I feel largely happy about
this event. We got many compliments, and
some criticism. Circumstances could have
been better. The beaches were in a no-good
condition. The weather was bad, we lost two
full days because of too much wind. From the
perspective of the organisation, however, the
main demands: safety, minimum number of
races for the championships, and a smooth operation of the races, have been satisfied.. I
think everybody will agree that Floris Lagerwey
on all these three aspects did an excellent job
again. Remember that we have only about 150
land sailors in this country. In France I understand that’s about 15.000. Organizing a major
event is very demanding on the few people
available. But we liked it and are very proud to
may do it.
Red Bull was the main sponsor. Sponsoring
consisted of two components: cash (no. I’m not
going to tell you how much) and the film. Red
Bull has about 1 ½ hours footage (tape) produced on the World Championships. The deal
was that we have free access to this tape to
edit a film four our own purposes of about 20
minutes. Red Bull chickened out, got so to
speak sore feet on the deal. They were afraid
that we would use the tape, or sell it for commercial purposes to third parties. It took me till
a few weeks ago to get a part of the tape available. So I am very sorry but we can not as yet
present the Worlds 2000 film at the occasion of
the EC 2001 in Le Vendée.
It may interest the reader to know that world
wide Red Bull did have 70 hours of TV exposure of parts of the Worlds film. In The Netherlands alone, there has been 1 ½ hours of the
film on television.

World Championschip Land Sailing
Dates: Sunday March 24 to Friday March 29. If
we do not have three races in each FISLY class
by the end of the day on Friday we will continue
the regatta into Saturday March 30,
Location: Ivanpah Dry Lake
Ivanpah is located on Interstate 15 on the
California/Nevada border. It is about 40 mi
southwest of Las Vegas. We will provide
detailed driving directions at a later date.
Classes: The details remain to be worked out,
however they include: FISLY: Class 2, Class 3,
Class 5, and Standart. NALSA: Classes: 2, 3, 4,
5, Five Square, Fed 5, Manta single, Manta
Twin, Mini Yachts (of various types). There will
be some RC model racing when the winds are
too light for sailing the big boats. If we have
missed anyone, let us know. Many of these
classes will be sailed as grouped starts and as
subclasses. All NALSA classes must have at
least 5 entries to be considered a separate
class.
Starts: We are trying for 5 starts but we need to
see what boats show up. The starting groups
will be announced later.
Rules: We will be sailing with the NALSA rules.
They are quite close to the FISLY rules. We will
post information on the differences in the
coming months.
Types of races: We will be sailing timed races.
The NALSA rules for timed races are different
that the FISLY rules. This will be outlined at a
later date.
Fees: Our preliminary budget is going to require
an entry fee of around $120 for people who pre
register. This is NOT the final number. Please
do not send in any money until we have posted
an application and notice of race (in October).
Accommodations: We have 75 rooms set
aside at Whiskey Pete's. We can arrange more
if necessary. The reservation Group Code is
SNA 0320. If you provide the group code when
making reservations the following are the rates
for double occupancy: $19.95 SundayThursday, $35.95 Friday, $49.95 Saturday. In
addition there will be 9% tax and $5.00 for each
additional person. Check in time 3:00PM on
Monday-Friday and 4:00PM on Saturday and
Sunday.
Rooms at Whiskey Pete’s Resort were selected
because it is the least expensive of the three
hotels. Reservations can be upgraded if anyone
desires more sumptuous quarters. Whiskey
Pete’s was completely redecorated recently.
Reservations can be made on the Primm Valley
web site (www.primadonna.com) or by phone.
Refer to Group Code SNA 0320 when making
reservations.
Phone N°: (800) FUN-STOP (800-386-7867). .
If the 800 number does not work from overseas
use: 702-383-1212.
The address is: Whiskey Pete’s, 31900 S Las
Vegas Blvd, Primm NV 89019.
Motor homes are available in Las Vegas,
however for the regatta, the casinos are very
near the sailing site and are inexpensive.
Logistics:
The easiest way to get to the site by plane is
through Las Vegas. There are many car rental
agencies at the airport. Vans and pick up trucks
can be rented as well. We will have some sort
of shuttle service from the airport for people and
gear. We will post more details on this as the
time gets closer.
If you are shipping a container and would like
some advice or support from this end, contact
Kent Hatch ([email protected]).
Yachts to rent or borrow:
At this point NALSA has not been able to make
arrangements for yachts to rent. There usually
are a few sailors who have extra yachts they
may be willing to rent or lend for the event. If
you are interested, let us know (rrdill@msn.
com).
Sights to see around the area: Our
experience is that visitors have been happier
finding their own way around than doing
organized tours arranged by NALSA. On the
urban side there is a large group of high end
clothing stores associated with the casinos. Las
Vegas is only an hour away and there are
busses from the casino to down town Las
Vegas. Los Angles is about 5 hours away by
car. San Francisco is about 8 hours.
On the Natural side: Grand Canyon is about 4
hours, Zion Canyon is about the same. Death
Valley is about three hours. Red Rock Canyon
is about an hour. There are lots of things to see
and do in the hills around the lake. See me
(Bob Dill) for suggestions.
If you need more specific information contact
Bob Dill ([email protected]).

What is NALSA?
Every now and then it’s important for an organization to step back and take a look at what it is
and why it exists. Members of NALSA are the
landsailing clubs. Individuals are indirect members of NALSA only by being members of a local club.
The North American Land Sailing Association
(NALSA) was incorporated in 1972, and its Articles of Incorporation include the following:
The specific and primary purposes are to promote the sport and pastime of land sailing for
the exclusive enjoyment of members of the Association and to provide a forum for communication among the members that will advance
the sport.
The general purpose is to further develop an
exciting, safe, non-polluting form of recreation;
to publish for the benefit of members information on research, organisations, and activities
associated with the sport; to identify and establish areas suitable for performance of the sport
of land sailing; to furnish to members land operation rules, racing rules and safety regulations; to assist in making land sailing vehicles
available to members; and, generally, to promote interest and participation in the sport of
land sailing in furtherance of the primary purposes of the Association.
Kent Hatch, Past President of NALSA
2001 HOLY GALE
Dennis US 2000
This year was the classic "you shoulda been
here yesterday" affair. We arrived Friday morning and it was a beautiful day at the Black
Rock. The sun was out, the wind was blowing
and the temperature was in the high 80's. We
got camp and the boats set up and had a great
day of sailing.
Saturday, with some help, I got the race
course set up so people could begin getting
used to the course and find the marks. Because of the lack of rain (for the last three
years) and the number of people who now use
the desert (thanks a lot Burning Man) much of
the surface was pretty torn up. We were able
to find a spot two miles long and one mile wide
that was suitable for racing. We sailed for most
of the afternoon and into the evening.
Sunday was the first day of racing (…)
That night was the "Mayor's mixer" hosted by
Mike Grimm the "Emperor", Mel and myself.
Mel's Angels made their first appearance and
their new attire was a big hit. Everybody had a
great time talking (telling lies) about the days
racing and anticipating what the future races
might hold.
Monday started out a little hotter than
usual and by the time 11:00 came around the
usual winds were no where to be seen. There
were some clouds in the sky but they weren't
very sincere (you can ask Linky about this).
The only thing that came up that day was the
temperature and it hit 101° F. Light and inconsistent winds started blowing around 4:00 and
some people went sailing, mostly just to cool
off. There was no entertainment planned for
the evening so people just hopped from camp
to camp enjoying the cooler air of the evening
and having a nice dinner with friends.
Tuesday it was 90° F at 8:00 AM and it
wasn't looking good for the wind. By the time
the temperature hit 112° F at 2:00 many of the
150 people who were at the event (including
most of the racers) were seeking cooler conditions at a lake that's about 1/2-hour drive from
the event site. The wind started to puff up
around 6:00 and by that time it was only 95° F
or so. People started to return from the lake
and Planet X and a lot went sailing. By sundown the wind was blowing a steady 15 and
the sailing was really nice. While all this was
happening we had our usual pot luck dinner
with plenty of good food. After dinner we had
the infamous SASSASS raffle. Rainy organized the event and sold tons of tickets (enough
to pay for most of the Porta-potties next year).
The Emperor and his Angels were the hosts
and did a stunning job, as usual. There were
many quality prizes donated this year and everybody that won walked away happy. I would
like to thank Jill F. for donating the wonderfully
tasteless prize that I, personally, won. The wind
continued to blow well into the night and many
USA
BELGIUM
people had some wonderful starlight sailing.
Wednesday once again wasn't looking good for wind. As soon as it started to
get hot, people started to pack up. Nobody
wanted to hang out in the heat another day.
Everybody pitched in and helped break
down camp and by 10:30 most was packed
up. We had the trophy presentation at
11:00 and the wind started to come up at
11:15 (which always happens when you
call off the regatta).
Some left to go home while others
stayed on the playa and sailed. The rest of
us went to Planet X for a cool shower and
to sit under the trees in the shade. John,
Rachel, Travis and Kai hosted the final
dinner at the newly improved Planet X outdoor sports bar and grill. The dinner (sushi,
ribs, guacamole etc.) and the cold keg of
beer --which quickly evaporated in the desert heat-- were paid for by SASSASS.
E verybody had a great time. Some went
back to the playa to sleep and others slept
under the trees on the grass. That night a
storm front blew through with strong winds
and a little rain. Reports from the playa said
it blew 40+ and filled the sky with dirt and
when it started to rain it rained mud. It just
goes to show you-- the Black Rock is always an adventure.
Should we pay the sailing master?
We have already started to think about
next year's Holy Gale. To avoid the crowds
of people on the lake and at the hot springs
(thanks, again, Burning Man) we are going
to hold the Gale sometime in June. And if it
doesn't rain enough to heal the playa this
winter we will have to move the event to another lake.
On a final note I would like to thank all the
people who helped put on this year’s Gale
and I hope everybody had a great time.
See you on the playa.
Last weekend (8th and 9th September) we had the
international Potjesregatta at De Panne, organised
by the ROYAL SAND YACHT CLUB. In spite of
being only one week before the EC, the number of
entries was quite important. There were about 45
pilots and some came from Holland, France, Germany and Denmark.
The sailing master was Jan Leye on Saturday and
Eric Engelbrecht on Sunday as they wanted themselves to sail 1 of the 2 days. It is not simple t find
sailing masters that know to manage good races.
One of the competitors asked: “Would it not be
better to pay the sailing master? You may find
more easily someone who is willing to do this
job…” This idea is very kind towards the sailing
master but not towards all the other people helping
to make this event successful.
Besides the sailing master there are 8 helpers on
the beach. That is 4 scorers, 2 rescue and towing
service and 2 Red Cross people to provide first
aid. The Red Cross is paid for their 4x4 ambulance on the beach and their eventual medical
costs. In the club there are even more helpers:
over the weekend we count about 10 people helping at the bar and on Saturday night the club of
youngsters (DE KRAB) prepared and served an
evening meal for the participants and their companions. The profit of this job will go into the club
funds of DE KRAB.
If I count well, that makes about 30 people helping
to make this event successful. I didn’t count the
time the club committee discussed the general organisation nor the help of Benny with the results of
the race.
If all these people should be paid for their support,
it would be impossible. And there is more. Most
people like to volunteer. It is nice when one can
do something for someone else.
As FISLY council member, I have been in many
clubs on moments when there was nothing special
to do. I have seen that also there, some people
are doing the job. Not for themselves but for their
club.
This network makes federations and these federations make FISLY. Thanks to you all.

News from the Brits
Another year’s racing over, and what a year it
proved to be. At first there were doubts as to
whether there would be any sandyachting, with
the country firmly in the grips of the Foot &
Mouth crisis and many of our sites in rural areas. Luckily, only Mablethorpe and Brean had
to be cancelled due to their close proximity to
livestock but as compensation Andy Parr, quite
superhumanly, organised an impromptu event
at Pendine Sands. It’s many years since sandyachts have graced the Pendine sand, but with
a provisional date for next year’s Series, things
are looking up.
There were few surprises in the final results
this year, although Steve Borrill K115 didn’t
have it all his own way this time - Alan Scantlebury K222 had fitted a new “fast” button in his
yacht which worked remarkably well. With a
disappointing result for Steve, the final regatta
at Hoylake in June clinched the Class III British
Championship title for Alan. Consistency paid
off for Richard Austin K144, having been 3rd at
all but one of the events, he finished the British
Championship series in, yes you’ve guessed it,
3rd place.
In the Class V’s the story was similar, except
that last year’s British Champion, David Green
K916, managed to maintain his form, despite a
glitch at the beginning of the Series, and retained his title. Chris Wright K508 had again to
stand in David’s shadow in second place and
Roger Leah K22, left it until the very last regatta to springboard himself up from 6th place
to finish 3rd. Competition was fierce all through
the year and any one of the top 6 pilots was in
with a good chance of taking the spoils.
The new British Championship Series 2001/2
starts with the first regatta at the Fylde in October, closely followed by the Anglia airfield event
at the end of that month. A long lay-off over
the winter months, when yachts are polished,
rebuilt or re-designed (depending on how well it
has performed over the year!) will see pilots
chomping at the bit to get back out there by the
time Brean regatta comes round at the beginning of March. There are eight scheduled
rounds to the new Series, Foot & Mouth permitting, and I am sure every opportunity will be
taken to qualify for that coveted place in the
British Team.
Competition to qualify for the Team will be
even hotter over the coming year, with the
European Championships returning to the UK
in September 2002. The Fylde Club will be
hosting the event and, if past Championships
are anything to go by, it should be a good ‘un!
See you there!

Junghans Carbon watches : chief sponsor EC 2001
Chief Sponsor of « Les Européennes Junghans Carbon de
Char à voile 2001 » in La Vendée :
Junghans, the timehonoured German watch
brand becomes involved in
land sailing
The common denominator: aesthetics, precision and the material –
carbon
Land sailing requires precision and
excellent reactions, perfect harmony between man, nature and
technology. This fast-growing sport
is now well in its way to being
tipped as the next international “in”
sport. The support given by its
sponsor, Junghans Germany, has
significantly contributed towards
this popularity. Junghans has been
manufacturing the time-honoured
German watch brand since 1861.
This year Junghans, establish in
the Baden-Württemberg town of
Schramberg, is celebrating its 140th
anniversary. The long-standing
brand’s recipe for success is the
combination of years of experience
coupled with a high level of innovation in the future-oriented technology fields of radio controlled and
solar powered watches. Junghans
timepieces combine state-of-the-art
technology and German-made
quality with timelessly beautiful designs – and all at reasonable
prices, appealing to a broad clientele.
However, it is not just aesthetics,
maximum precision and stylised
technology that the famous watch
manufacturer’s products share with
land sailing. Both use the same material: Like the hull of a land yacht,
Junghans Actio Mega Carbon radio
controlled watch collection is also
made of carbon. Junghans first
used this high tech material for radio controlled watches worldwide in
1999. So, just like racing land
yachts, the radio controlled watch
collection is ultra-lightweight and
extremely resilient. A watch that is
perfect for outdoor activities – for
land sailors and other sports enthusiast alike. With its presence in the
European Championships, Junghans will become even better
known in the European market. 60
percent of the company’s export activities are already being carried on
in Europe. In France, distribution
takes place through upmarket specialist stores.
When the land sailing elite meets
up in La Vendée from 18 – 22 September 2001 for the European
Championships, for the first time
Junghans will also be present at
this ultimate highlight of the land
sailing season in its capacity as
Chief Sponsor. The international
field comprises 230 pilots who will
be at the start in classes II, III, V,
VII, VIII and Standart at four coastal
locations. For Junghans this involvement means a consistent continuation of previous sponsorship
activities.
The company has been active in
the world of land sailing since 1999.
Now, in 2001, for the third time
Junghans will be Chief Sponsor of
the Junghans Carbon Cup in St.
Peter-Ording (Germany), on of the
most important European land sailing events. Junghans previously cosponsored the European and World
Championships 2000 in Terschelling in the Netherlands. It is a matter of honour that the company also
acts as Chief Sponsor at the EC
event in France in it s own name:
Les Européennes Junghans Carbon de Char à voile
The star of the 14-headed Junghans Carbon Crew from St. PeterOrding, which will be at the starting
line for Germany, is Hans-Werner
Eickstädt, who came in third in the
last European and World Championships in Class III, behind the
Frenchmen, Bertrand Lambert, and
Gabriel Valat. The 41 year-old has
extensive competition experience.
In 1984 Eickstädt first managed to
defeat his main rival, Bertrand Lambert, to become European Champion. Since then the two of them
have provided thrilling duels in international competitions. The 2001
EC in France also promises some
exciting racing. Finally, here we are
in the hotbed of land sailing. Perhaps this time Eickstädt will ultimately once again succeed in beating his favourite rival, Lambert, to
the title?
Another person likely to do well
once again in the carbon yacht
looks like being Roland Gäbler. The
man who has been Olympic champion several times in the Tornado
class this year competes for Denmark, his current country of residence. The introduction of some female pilots to the Junghans Carbon
Crew is also awaited with excitement. 27 year-old Imke Borowski
from Hamburg has already accumulated 13 years’ land sailing experience and it is believed that with
low wind speeds she has a good
chance of winning a title.
The financial support provided by
Junghans makes it possible to
make the competition more attractive and thus promote interest in
this type of sport at an international
level. Junghans attaches great importance to continuity and is therefore determined to make its commitment to land sailing a long term
one. In 2002 the watch manufacturers would most probably like to
support the World Championships
from March 24 to 30 in the USA.
They are already looking forward to
the 2004 World Championships in
St. Peter-Ording on the German
coast.
Junghans Carbon watches : sponsor principal CE 2001
voile.
St. Peter-Ording.
Junghans Carbon watches : Hauptsponsor EM 2001
Hauptsponsor der „Les Européennes Junghans Carbon de
Char à voile 2001“ in der La Vendée:
Junghans, die traditionsreiche deutsche Uhrenmarke
engagiert sich fürs
Strandsegeln
gleichzeitig hoher Innovationskraft
in den zukunftsträchtigen Technologiefeldern Funk- und Solaruhren.
Junghans-Uhren verbinden TopTechnologie und -Qualität made in
gefertigt. Junghans hat 1999 diesen
High-Tech-Werkstoff weltweit erstmals für Funkuhren eingesetzt. Die
Funkuhren-Kollek tion ist damit wie
die Rennsegler ultraleicht und extrem widerstandsfähig. Eine Uhr,
die auch outdoor ganz schön was
mitmacht – für Strandsegler und
andere Sportsgeister eben.
In
verspricht spannende Rennen.
Schließlich befindet man sich hier
in der Hochburg der Strandsegler.
Vielleicht gelingt es Eickstädt ja
diesmal, seinem Lieblingsrivalen
Lambert, endlich wieder einmal den
Titel streitig zu machen?
Eine gute Figur im Carbon-Renner
wird voraussichtlich auch wieder
Roland Gäbler machen. Der
mehrfache Olympiasieger in der
Tornado-Klasse, startet in diesem
Strandsegeln langfristig angelegt.
2002 möchte der Uhrenhersteller
voraussichtlich die Weltmeisterschaften vom 24. bis 30. März in
den USA unterstützen und schon
heute freut man sich in Schramberg
auf die Weltmeisterschaften 2004
an Deutschlands Küste in St. PeterOrding.
