Les jeux olympiques
Paris est l'une des cinq villes candidates à l'accueil des
jeux olympiques 2012 et beaucoup la donne comme
favorite. Le CIO1 va annoncer sa décision le 7 juillet et
l'excitation grandit dans la capitale. Julie Gueury.
Est-ce que vous aimez les jeux olympiques?
Ouais!
Plus fort! Vous aimez les JO?
Paris a des atouts mais enfin on a déjà raté une
première candidature il y a de ça2 une bonne
douzaine d'années donc il faut pas être trop optimiste
non plus.
Vous les voulez à Paris en 2012?
Ouais!
C'est pas mal, c'est pas mal mais je sens qu'on va
pouvoir faire mieux.
Oui, je soutiens cette candidature. J'aimerais bien
que ça se passe à Paris donc je suis à fond3 dedans
et j'espère que tout le public qui est sur les
Champs-Élysées est avec moi.
D'abord, la première fois qu'on le voit, on se demande
ce que ça veut dire. Ben, c'est mes petits-enfants qui
m'on dit: c'est marrant, on a l'impression que c'est
des grands anneaux de couleur, que c'est des
anneaux pour se baigner4. Alors, après on a vu que
c'était effectivement les couleurs olympiques.
Les immeubles nous cachent le repère mais dès
qu'on se trouve dans des artères un peu plus larges,
on arrive à le voir plutôt bien.
Pas étonnant puisque le Belvédère, ce phare planté
près du parc des Batignolles fait 75 m de hauteur. On
peut ainsi voir les couleurs olympiques qu'il porte à
une dizaine de kilomètres alentour. Le Belvédère fait
partie d'un ensemble, le repère olympique construit
sur des anciennes friches industrielles5 et il a fait
l'objet d'un concours et c'est Yves Pagès et son
équipe d'architectes qui l'a remporté parmi 400 autres
projets.
Toute la partie métallique du repère a été faite par
l'entreprise Eiffel qui est l'héritier, en fait, de Gustave
Eiffel qui avait construit la Tour Eiffel, donc c'est
l'entreprise qu'il avait à l'époque et c'était un assez
beau chantier puisqu'on a fait appel à une équipe de
monteurs qui sont en fait des alpinistes parce que
c'est pas des ouvriers normaux qui peuvent intervenir
sur un chantier pareil.
Bon, on a des caméras qui sont installées en tête du
repère olympique et qui sont manipulables par le
public, en fait, il y a une grande salle au pied du
repère et avec une espèce de joystick en fait vous
pouvez pointer les caméras vers différents endroits
du skyline parisien. C'est vraiment faire comprendre
par le regard, la vision, de manière très simple, la
réalité physique de la candidature.
Paris is one of five candidate cities for hosting the 2012
Olympic games and many people judge it to be the
favorite. The IOC is going to announce its decision on
July 7 and excitement's growing in the capital. Julie

Paris has qualities but we already blew a first
candidature a dozen or so years so ago, so we
mustn't be too optimistic either.
Do you want them in Paris in 2012?
Ouais!
Not bad, bad but I sense that we're going to be able
to do better.
Yes I support this candidature. I would like it to
happen in Paris so I'm completely into it and I hope
that all the public on the Champs-Elysées is with me.
To begin with, the first time that you see it, you ask
yourself what's it supposed to mean. Well it's my
grandchildren that said to me, it's funny, you have the
impression that they're these big colour rings, they're
like rubber rings for swimming. So, afterwards then
we saw that effectively they're the Olympic colours.
The buildings hide the landmark but as soon as you
find yourself on the axis roads that are a little bit
wider, you can see it pretty well, yes.
Not suprising because the Belvédère, this lighthouse
planted near to Batignolles park is 75m high. So you
can see the olympic colours that it bares from ten or
so kilometres around. The Belvédère is part of a
whole, the Olympic landmark built on a disused
warehouse site and it was the subject of a
competition and it's Yves Pagès and his team of
architects which won from 400 other projects.
All the metal part of the landmark was done by the
Eiffel company which comes down from Gustave
Eiffel who built the Eiffel Tower, so it's the company
that he had at the time and it was a pretty wonderful
building project because we called in an assembly
team who are in fact mountaineers because it's not
ordinary workers who can intervene on a project such
as this one.
Well, we have cameras installed on top of the
Olympic landmark and which can be manipulated by
the public in fact. There's a large room at the foot of
the landmark with a sort of joystick in fact and you
can point the cameras towards different spots of the
Parisian skyline. It's really in order to understand by
seeing, by looking, in a very simple way, the physical
reality of the candidature.
Certain visitors come from around abouts look behind
the gates of the site and you can see at the foot of the
Belvédère a dozen flags which represent the
concepts behind the candidature. You can even hear

Certains visiteurs viennent d'ailleurs jeter un oeil
derrière les grilles du site et on peut voir au pied du
Belvédère une vingtaine de drapeaux qui présentent
les concepts de la candidature. Vous pouvez même
entendre des témoignages sonores en tirant sur des
petites ficelles. Petits moments d'émotion :

erreur... Oui, on a gagné. Ils sont champions
olympiques.
Pour les plus curieux une salle d'exposition est
accessible et vous présente les différents projets
architecturaux de Paris 2012, l'histoire du site et
surtout une maquette de ce que pourrait être le futur
village olympique et paralympique. Les réactions sont
plutôt positives.
Ce qui m'a plu c'est que d'abord on a déblayé ces
trucs qui étaient là depuis des années et des années,
qui étaient vieux, sales, mal entretenus, qui prenaient
beaucoup de place, et on a fait quelque chose de
propre. Bon, quant à l'exposition, elle est très bien
présentée. Je veux dire qu'elle est schématiquement
présentée, bien. On a un aperçu vraiment valable de
ce que ça pourrait être et donc c'est intéressant.
On se pose pas mal de questions parce que, étant du
quartier, on imagine que si ça devait se faire ça
apporterait beaucoup de changements pour ce qui
nous concerne. On espère que du point de vue des
impôts locaux ça ne changera pas trop les choses
mais en tout cas d'un point de vue animation ça peut
être une bonne chose. C'est à voir.
Je vois surtout ensuite, après les jeux olympiques
s'ils ont lieu, la reconversion, d'une part en parc, qui
est très importante pour les enfants, avec des
espaces de jeux et d'autre part pour aussi les
habitations.
J'ai des amis qui sont dans l'hôtellerie et ils pensent
qu'effectivement ça vaudrait la peine que Paris soit
reconnue ville olympique parce que ça leur
apporterait quelque chose de bien. Les restaurants,
les hôtels, et tous les commerces enfin en général.
Je ne suis toujours pas satisfait de voir toutes les
infrastructures marchandises disparaître mais cela
peut donner naissance effectivement à un village
olympique, et qui peut surtout se traduire par un
aménagement urbanistique de qualité et rester après
les jeux pour satisfaire les besoins de logements qui
sont de plus en plus importants.
Quoi qu'il en soit, la Ville de Paris récupèrera le
terrain où se trouve le repère. Les structures seront
reconverties en logements sociaux, commerces,
bureaux, en bref un nouveau quartier de Paris verra
le jour autour d'un immense parc. Mais en attendant
le 7 juillet, jour où la ville d'accueil de cette 30e
olympiade sera choisie, Paris se mobilise, espère et
découvre l'esprit des jeux sur les Champs-Élysées
transformés en champs olympiques. Réactions:

For the more curious an exhibition room is available
to show you the different architectural projects for
Paris 2012, the history of the site and above all a
model of what could be the future Olympic and
Paralympic village. The reactions are for the most
part positive.
What pleased me is first that they've cleaned up this
place which was there for year and years, which was
old, dirty, badly-maintained, which took up lots of
space and they've done something clean with it. Well
as for the exhibition, it's very well presented. I mean
to say that it's schematically presented, well. You
really have a proper overview of what it could be and
so that's interesting.
We ask oursevelves quite a few questions, because
as we come from the district we imagine that if it does
go ahead it will bring lots of changes as far as we are
concerned. We hope that it won't change things too
much in terms of local taxes but as a happening it
could be a good thing. We'll have to see.
Above all I look at the aftermath, after the Olympics if
they take place, the reconversion on the one hand as
a park, which is very important for the children, with
places to play and on the other hand for housing.
I have some friends who are in the hotel business and
they thing that in effect it would be worth it for Paris to
be recognised as the Olympic Village because that
will be a good thing for them. The restaurants, the
hotels and all the shops in general.
I'm still not hapy about seeing all the trade
infrastructure disappear, but that could I suppose give
birth to an Olympic village, and above all it could
translate into high quality urban renewal and stay
after the games to satisfy the evergrowing housing
needs.
Whatevery happens, Paris will reclaim the ground
where the landmark is. The buildings will be
reconverted into low-cost housing, shops, offices, in
short a new district of Paris will see the light of day,
centred around a huge park. But waiting for the 7th of
July, the day when the host city of the 30th Olympic
games will be chosen, Paris is mobilised, it hopes
and it discovers the spirit of the games on the
Champs Elysees - transformed into Olympic playing
fields. Reactions:
Well we arrived at the beginning so maybe we're
going to eat something and I think we'll stop there
because it's starting to get quite crowded and I
wouldn't like to lose the children on the way.
Guillaume played a little bit of hockey, basketball,
he's delighted, he's very tired and my daughter played
hockey.

peut-être aller manger et je pense qu'on va s'arrêter
là parce qu'il commence à y avoir beaucoup
beaucoup de monde et je voudrais pas perdre les
enfants en route. Guillaume, il a fait un petit peu de
hockey, du basket, il est ravi, il est bien fatigué et ma
fille fait du hockey.
Nous avons vu quelques activités sportives, piscine,
hockey sur gazon, football, c'est agréable. Le petit, il
a essayé le triathlon.
J'ai couru et j'étais content.
C'est la première fois qu'on voit les Champs-Élysées
transformés en un grand terrain de sport pour les
enfants. Déjà ils ont pu faire du bateau à voile, là-bas.

We saw some sporting activities, the swimming pool,
grass hockey, football, it's pleasant. The little one
tried the triathlon.
I ran and I was happy.
It's the first time that we've seen the Champs-Elysees
transformed into a large sports field for children.
Already they've been able to do some yachting over
there. Oh gosh ! The fall!
The games after all are something unique and if we
don't have them it will be unique to have had an event
like that, so big!

Les JO, enfin, c'est un truc unique et même si on les
aura pas ce sera quand même unique d'avoir un
événement comme ça aussi grand, quoi!
