Musée-Château, Annecy, salle des colonnes, from 7th June to 31st October 2010 in partnership with CITIA, City of moving images, and the National Film Board of Canada. (...) » 50 years of the Annecy Festival In the 1960 Festival newspaper, the Mayor of Annecy, Charles Bosson presented the arrival of the Journées Internationales du Cinéma d’Animation (JICA) in the following manner: “(…) thanks to the Association pour la Diffusion du Cinéma, our town has had the rare privilege to be the first to discover some of the masterpieces of the 7th Art, including Fellini’s unforgettable Strada. From the friendship born on these occasions between the animators of the association and the leaders of the Film Club, a project has been proposed to transfer the “Journées Internationales du Cinéma d’Animation” (previously held in 1956 and 1958 during the Cannes film festival) to Annecy, under the auspices of the centenary of the incorporation of Savoie to France. (…)” In this year that celebrates the 150th anniversary of the reunion of Savoie with France, the Musée-Château in Annecy that hosts the art of animation in its collections is paying tribute to the fifty years of the International Animation Film Festival and all the creators and creatures that have been illustrated in it. CREATEURSC & REATURES Créateurs & créatures 50 ans de Festival d’Annecy CrEATORS & CREATURES 50 years of the Annecy Festival L’exposition The exhibition Créateurs... Creators... In giving life to their creations, animators, these true modern-day Pygmalions and alchemists, make the dream of painters and sculptors from all time come true frame by frame. With the inauguration in Annecy of a new festival dedicated entirely to their creations, they began dreaming of finally being recognised as artists rather than labouring craftsmen in a supposedly inferior branch of “real” cinema. ...& creatures In 1960, a strange collection of creatures illustrated the first newspaper of the inaugural Journées Internationales du Cinéma d’Animation d’Annecy. Surrounding Émile Reynaud’s Poor Pete and Émile Cohl’s Fantoche – the founding heroes of animation – was a more or less humanlike crowd originating from the overflowing imaginations of creators of a new genre: animation film directors. After fifty years and over thirty editions of the Annecy Festival, this exhibition offers a new gallery, that of the creators and creatures that have been lighting up Annecy theatres since 1960. Through these unique portraits from the sixties to the 2000s, the MuséeChâteau invites the public to follow the development of the ever moving art of animation. Together with the artists, the artisans of the Festival have tirelessly been working to promote the new art of animation, to show and demonstrate that this form of expression can be aimed at both adults and children. They have been able to give filmmakers from the world over the space they needed to meet and discuss their art beyond all frontiers and this exhibition is also the occasion to honour them. The sixties American cartoon reigns virtually unchallenged over the screens with films that are primarily for children. However, almost everywhere around the world, a few filmmakers and artists are experimenting with frame by frame animation, inventing a new language sparse of words yet unrivalled in expressivity. Annecy 1960: Hello Animation! Finally here is a place dedicated to the presentation of international animation. Instead of stars such as Mickey, Annecy is the place to discover malleable, fragmented, ephemeral and rarely identifiable creatures in experimental films. The auteur film claims – in the words of Walerian Borowczyk – an anti-Disney animation that demonstrates. L’exploration des possibilités narratives du cinéma d’animation engendre certes des personnages The seventies After a break in 1969 due to a budgetary crisis, the Festival, which remains a biennial event, takes off again in 1971. In the world of television, a surge of Japanese animated series comes along to seriously compete with the American productions. However, the Annecy Festival keeps to its course to defend a demanding auteur animation, turned resolutely towards art rather than the industry. Exploring narrative possibilities creates extraordinary characters, their creators are not trying to make adventure series heroes. The eighties Up until 1981, the Festival was managed by a team in Paris in coordination with the Annecy Film Club. Annecy now takes over the event. The JICA association becomes the International Animated Film Centre. The first International Animation Film Market (MIFA) is held in 1985. From the surrealist characters created by Jan Švankmajer to John Lasseter’s simple desk lamp, the creatures of this decade are often far from the traditional animation heroes. Films as well as TV series are expanding their audiences by aiming at adults. In Annecy, initiatives are multiplying to create a synergy between the Festival and the Market. The rise in the number of films submitted coupled with the American and Asian competition leads to the Festival going annual in 1998. The creators’ quirky even crazy humour creates incredibly polymorphic creatures. It is also the return of popular heroes to the screen. Henry Selick et quelques marionnettes James and the Giant Peach / James et la pêche géante, 1996 Prix du long métrage Annecy 1997 © André Gobeli The 2000s Animation leaves the cinemas and television. Pictures become interactive and video games emerge as a new mass leisure activity. The digital revolution concerns all usages and all media. To accompany this economic and cultural boom in animation, Annecy creates a new structure: CITIA, City of moving images, which sees the emergence of a genuine economy based on animated pictures and multimedia. The role of the feature film is enhanced in the competition. The first exhibition space devoted to animation opens at the Conservatoire of Art and History in 2005. Motion capture and computer graphics open new possibilities between live action and animation. We see the appearance of hybrid creatures, who owe their characteristics to the imagination of their creators and their movement to real actors. Is this still animation? It’s a time for frontiers to disappear and the question seems dated. However, traditional animation still has its place, benefiting from the contribution of new technologies to refine and increase its performance. Stunning technical prowess accompany the development of the feature film that is not afraid of creating antiheroes. Fifty creators – and a few more besides – have answered the invitation of CITIA, City of moving images, by creating an original piece of work paying tribute to the 50th anniversary of the Annecy Festival. The exhibition presents a collection of these tributes, which can also be discovered in full in an anniversary book entitled Creators and Creatures, 50 years of the Annecy International Animation Festival, produced by CITIA in collaboration with the Musée-Château, published by Glénat. Classed as a Historical Monument in 1902, Annecy Castle was the residence of the Counts of Geneva till 1394. Renovations carried out over the 15th and 16th centuries have given the castle its unique appearance, mixing defensive medieval architecture with the elegance of French renaissance. It was abandoned in the 18th century and subsequently used as a military barracks till 1947, before being purchased by Annecy council in 1953. The first exhibition was inaugurated three years later, announcing the cultural vocation of this ancient royal residence. The Museum now offers visitors a number of rich and diverse collections through permanent and temporary exhibitions set in the castle rooms, made up of objects of heritage coming from the region and lake archaeology as well as medieval sculptures and paintings of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Since the 1980s the MuséeChâteau has also invested in contemporary art, oriented firstly on glass and more recently on man in his natural environment. The visit also includes the regional observatory of Alpine lakes showing the different aspects of the lakes found in the region. The animated film collection makes up an important and exceptional part of this heritage and is closely linked to the Journées Internationales du Cinéma d’Animation which came to Annecy in 1960 as part of the unification of the Savoy region to France. The collection, which today includes over 5,000 objects, was officially integrated into the Musée-Château, “Museum of France” in 2003. The collection reflects the objectives of the pioneers of the festival to create an inventory of different animation techniques and show off the work of award winning filmmakers of the past fifty years. CITIA Exposition, situated at the Conservatoire d’Art et d’Histoire and presented by the MuséeChateau, has used this collection to offer Annecy its first permanent exhibition space dedicated to the history, art and techniques of animated images. Over the past five years, the Museum has also been widening its notion of animated images to include «moving images», and bridging the gap between contemporary art and animation. The contemporary art collection has been enriched with two additions : Medusa, by William Kentridge in 2005 and Fuji, LMNO, by Robert Breer in 2006, along with temporary exhibitions by these two artists and installations by Du Zhenjun in 2007.
