Sa conception monocoque n'interdit pas son constructeur, conformment une tradition remontant aux annes 1920, de dcliner la berline de base en versions diverses, plus luxueuses, plus familiales ou plus sportives, voire carrment commerciales et utilitaires. Lorsque la gamme des berlines 403 s'teint en 1966, les drivs U8 (camionnette bche et plateau-cabine) poursuivent leur carrire jusqu'en 1967, remplacs par les nouvelles U8 sur base 404. Sans concurrence aprs l'abandon par Simca de ses versions pick-up, la 404 bche va bnficier d'un quasi monopole sur son crneau pendant 12 ans, les dernires camionnettes tant assembles au Kenya en 1979. En mars 1967, les 404 camionnettes moteur Diesel XD88 deviennent les types U10D pour les Mines. Outils des artisans et des agriculteurs par excellence, les 404 U8/U10 bches aux qualits de robustesse reconnues ont t surexploites, surcharges, uses jusqu' la corde et les survivantes sorties indemnes d'annes de dur labeur sont rarissimes. Raison de plus, s'il en tait besoin, d'examiner cet exemplaire sortie d'usine en Janvier 1976 : il est quasiment neuf ! Achete neuve par son unique propritaire, le prsident d'une socit qui en avait plusieurs dans le cadre d'une flotte d'entreprise, cette 404 U a t conserve dans le garage de sa rsidence secondaire dans le Midi sans tre jamais utilise, d'o son tat exceptionnel, proprement incroyable et ses 142 km au compteur. Anime par le moteur Diesel Indenor XD 88 de 1948 cm3 et 57 ch DIN, la camionnette bche 2/3 places 404 U10D (dont le type Mines devient UXD en juillet 1973 sans changement de spcifications), produite de mars 1967 avril 1988 en France (voitures compltes et lots CKD) est donne pour 950 kg de charge utile, masse autorise par l'emploi de classiques ressorts lames l'arrire la place des ressorts hlicodaux des berlines. De couleur beige, bche beige et intrieur en simili marron, elle a encore sous son capot tous les dcalques de prconisations d'origine. Modeste automobile, certes, mais sans doute occasion unique car elle reprsente le rve de tout collectionneur : une voiture de 35 ans d'ge NEUVE ! With nearly three million units made of all types, from 1960 to 1989, the Peugeot 404, with its clean Pininfarina lines was one of the biggest successes of the French carmaker. Despite its monocoque construction, it did not stop Peugeot from developing a whole range of saloons, estates, coupe and convertible, to even basic derivatives such as vans, pick-ups and commercial vehicles, a tradition that harked back to the 1920s. When the 403 range of saloons was phased out in 1966, the derivative U8 (a pick-up with a tarpaulin top) went on being produced till 1967, when it was finally replaced by new U8, which was based on the 404. Without competition from Simca, which had phased out its pick-ups, the 404 pick-up had a virtual monopoly over its niche for the next 12 years, the last one being assembled in Kenya in 1979. In March 1967, the 404 diesel pick-up powered by the XD88 engine became the type U10D for use in mines. A veritable tool par excellence for the artisans and the farmers, the tarpaulin-topped 404 U8/U10 was recognized for its qualities of robustness and most have been overexploited, overloaded, and survivors - mostly very worn-out anyway- are extremely rare. All the more reason, why the vehicle on offer, which left the factory in January 1976, needs closer look: because it is almost new! Bought new by its sole owner, the president of a company that had several within a corporate fleet, this 404 U10 was kept in the garage of his second home in the Southeast of France (Midi) without ever being used, hence its exceptional condition, and it's astounding 142km on the odometer. Powered by the diesel Indenor XD88 (with 1948cc developing 57bhp), the two-three-seater pick-up 404 U10D (with the model for the mines becoming the UXD in July 1973 without any change in specifications), was produced from March 1967 to April 1988 in France (complete cars and also CKDs), with a permissible payload of 950kg, used conventional leaf springs at the rear in place of the coil springs for the saloon. Coloured beige, with a beige canvas top and brown faux leather interior, the underside of the bonnet still has its original decals. An ordinary vehicle, true, but without doubt it's a unique opportunity, because this vehicle represents the dream of every collector: a 35-yearold car that is brand NEW!
