Secretary`s Report - Canadian Dermatology Association
July 2013 Secretary’s Report Mariusz Sapijaszko, MD, FRCPC Secretary and Chair, Membership and Awards Committee Canadian Dermatology Association The Membership and Awards Committee is an active committee having on average five to six meetings per year. We have welcomed 19 new members since the last Annual General Meeting in 2012. Congratulations go out to new life members: Drs John Grainge, Sophie Hofstader, George Mah Poy, Bertrand Rodrigue, Edwin Rather and Giles Raymond. I am pleased to report that CDA continues to enjoy a steady increase in its membership. We currently have 737 members compared to 718 members at this time last year, which represents an increase of 2.64% in total membership. Looking at the last five years, CDA’s dues paying members have increased by 10%. In the same time period, the association also welcomed 63% of the new certificants who held a complimentary membership with CDA. Being an active member of CDA affords several opportunities such as having input into CDA programs by serving on one of its many committees and networking with colleagues from across the country on issues of interest. The Membership and Awards committee will continue to work hard encouraging and promoting the benefits of membership to colleagues who are not yet members. The committee once again, received exceptional nominations for the Young Dermatologists’ Volunteer Award and the Public Education Awards; we were especially pleased to have submissions in the media television category from CBC, CTV and Global Television. Congratulations to the following award recipients who were honoured at the Awards Ceremony during the Annual Conference: The Public Education Award in the media print category was presented to Ms. Lisa Hannam and Ms. Emilie Dingfeld of glow Magazine and to Dr. Denise Wexler for her article which appeared in the Best Health Magazine. In the media television category the award was presented to CTV News - W5 and in the not-for-profit category the Public Education Award was presented to Ms. Christine Janus and Ms. Christine Clarke of the Canadian Skin Patient Alliance. Dr. Michal Kalisiak of Calgary received the Young Dermatologists’ Volunteer Award. If you know of colleagues who have made outstanding contributions to the specialty of dermatology or have gone above and beyond in their service to your Association, please consider them for one of CDA’s awards. They deserve the recognition for their involvement and work. I wish to thank my dedicated colleagues who have served on the Membership and Awards Committee over the past year: Drs. Lorne Albrecht, Benjamin Barankin, Barbara Kellner, Irina Turchin and Marni Wiseman.
