3. LA CARIDAD DE CAMINREAL AND THE ANCIENT CITIES OF THE JILOCA VALLEY LA CARIDAD DE CAMINREAL ET LES VILLES ANCIENNES DU JILOCA La Caridad (Caminreal) La Caridad (Caminreal) This city was founded at the end of the 2nd century B.C. following the Roman occupation. It was designed to house the natives who were forced to relocate there from their scattered little villages. Judging from the coins found at the site the city could be Osicerda or Orosis. The destruction of the city came about as a result of battles between Sertorius and Pompey in the first third of the 1st century B.C. The city was completely destroyed during the wars and then abandoned. Next to the city there is an Interpretation Centre dedicated to Roman culture which includes reproductions of the pieces found at the site. Cerro de San Esteban (El Poyo del Cid) After the destruction of La Caridad a new city was founded on the site of San Esteban, on the top of a hill. It was surrounded by a long wall, marked out by at least eight rectangular towers. The city, which could be the city of Leonica mentioned by Pliny, began to be progressively abandoned from the 1st century A.D. Partially reoccupied and fortified in the Late Middle Ages, it could be linked to the history of El Cid Campeador. La Loma de Fuentes Claras In imperial times, as San Esteban was being progressively abandoned, a new city emerged in La Loma de Fuentes Claras. None of the original buildings have survived and the site is known for its isolated discoveries such as a stone shaped in a bull’s head and a hospitality tessera. It’s abandonment could have started in the 4th century A.C. and was completely deserted by the Late Middle Ages. Some of its building materials may have subsequently been used to build the nearby wool washing site of El Poyo which contains many large and perfectly cut stones.
