Sample Conjoint Arrangement
Sample Conjoint Arrangement
NOTE: This following is a SAMPLE only, to provide guidance on the items that should be
included in a Conjoint Arrangement. This sample does not represent an existing UVM Conjoint
Arrangement, and, in particular, both the named faculty and proposed joint supervision are
fictitious. The sample is a modified version of an actual Conjoint Arrangement between the
University of Tasmania, with which UVM has an existing research collaboration, and another
U.S. university.
1
Conjoint arrangement between the University of Tasmania and the
University of Vermont in relation to graduate research candidates
This document is made in response to the agreement of academic cooperation between the
University of Tasmania (UTAS) and the University of Vermont (UVM) and involves the
implementation of a Joint Doctoral degree between the University of Tasmania and the
University of Vermont.
Preamble
I. A joint research higher degree is established under the graduate research policies of the
University of Tasmania and the University of Vermont. A Sub-Committee of the Board of
Graduate Research will adjudicate and make a recommendation to the Dean of Graduate
Research (UTAS) and Dean of the Graduate College (UVM) where a disparity occurs between
the policies of the two universities. .
The Degree
1. The University of Tasmania and the University of Vermont hereby establish a Joint Doctoral
degree program, where each degree is to be awarded by both institutions. Each award would
include relevant certification stating that the award was made as a consequence of a conjoint
arrangement between the University of Tasmania and the University of Vermont.
2. The maximum duration of a doctoral degree is four years for a full-time student from
commencement of enrolment at the University of Tasmania. This length can be extended in
exceptional cases, after a favourable opinion given by the two institutions and on proposition by
the PhD advisers. This proposition must be introduced 6 months before the expected date of the
end of the PhD thesis.
3. In addition to producing a thesis, the student will complete the coursework and
Comprehensive Exam requirements of the University of Vermont.
4. In addition, the student shall complete a program of generic skills, developed in consultation
with the Principal Co-Supervisors, during the candidature. This program shall include skills
required for successful completion of the thesis and skills that will enhance the career
aspirations of the candidate.
5. The language of the thesis will be English.
Administration of the Degree
6. A Sub-Committee of the Board of Graduate Research, comprising representatives of each
University, will oversee the arrangements for the degree. The Sub-Committee will include the
Graduate Research Coordinator or equivalent of the relevant Department or School of each
university and the Principal Co-Supervisors. Sub-Committee members are listed in Appendix
A.
2
The functions of the Sub-Committee will be to make a recommendation to the Dean of Graduate Research
(UTAS) and Dean of the Graduate College (UVM) on the following:
where a disparity occurs between the two University policies;
the copyright arrangements and other intellectual property issues pertaining to the thesis;
•
on other candidature requirements such as requests for special leave, supervision and confirmation
of candidature and the appointment of examiners;
•
•
Ethical and Intellectual Property Issues
7. The student will not commence any research work that raises ethical issues, until approval has
been obtained from the relevant University bodies.
8. The IP generated under this conjoint agreement is subject to two complementary legitimate interests
that will be recognised in the first instance on the basis of the student's funding:
While funded by the ACE CRC or the Australian Government the project falls within the scope
of the activities of the joint venture ACE CRC. The IP is assigned by the student to the University of
Tasmania and accepted by the University on behalf of the ACE CRC.
•
When funded from UVM sources or the US Government, the IP is governed by IP regulations of
the University of Vermont.
•
In the event that ownership of IP generated under this agreement ("Project IP") cannot be resolved on
the basis of the student's funding, the parties will use their best endeavours to negotiate a separate
agreement governing ownership and exploitation of the project IP.
Standard of Academic Conduct
9. Candidates will be expected to undertake their program in accordance with accepted standards of
academic conduct. Any form of academic conduct which is contrary to these standards is academic
misconduct, for which either University may penalise a student.
Other program conditions
10. The Sub-Committee will recommend to the Board the relevant policies and procedures pertaining to
the degree with respect to changes to candidature status (attendance status, suspension of candidature
(leave of absence), variation to period of candidature), review of progress (annual progress report and
milestones) and termination of candidature.
Supervision
11. The candidate will have at least two supervisors. Associate Professor Sharon Anderson and Assistant
Professor Robert Bates are respectively designated by the University of Tasmania and the University of
Vermont as Principal Co-Supervisors. Each university will nominate an associate supervisor or advisory
committee should the principal supervisor leave the university.
12. The student and Principal Co-Supervisors will consult regularly via email and via teleand/or videoconference on the progress of the research. Both supervisors will be present (in person or via tele- or
3
video-conference) at the significant events in the life of the candidature. The student and Principal CoSupervisors will make every effort to meet face-to-face at conferences or at the University of Tasmania or
the University of Vermont whenever possible during the student's candidature.
Examination
13. The examination process will be administered taking into account the policies of both Universities and
shall make recommendation on the award of the degree to the Dean of Graduate Research (University of
Tasmania) and the Dean of the Graduate College (University of Vermont). The dissertation defense
committee members designated by the University of Vermont will be appointed as official examiners for
the University of Tasmania. Two principal readers will submit a written and signed dissertation reader's
report to the University of Tasmania and the University of Vermont. The dissertation will advance to the
final public oral examination at the University of Vermont on positive recommendation of the principal
readers. The recommendation on the award of the degree at each institution will be based on the two
written readers' reports and the report of the oral examination.
The successful outcome of the examining process would be the award of a Doctoral degree from the
University of Tasmania and a Doctoral degree from the University of Vermont. Each award will include
relevant certification stating that the award was made as a consequence of a conjoint arrangement
between the University of Tasmania and the University of Vermont.
The PhD student must follow the rules of both countries concerning the registering, description,
and reproduction of the thesis.
Financial Arrangements
14. The PhD student will be enrolled in both institutions. Tuition and/or enrolment fees wi1l be paid to the
institutions in an alternating fashion according to the schedule found in Appendix B. Payment of the
student's stipend will follow the same schedule. In Australia, the student's stipend is paid by an ACE CRC
scholarship. In the U.S., the University of Vermont tuition and the student's stipend will be paid by
extramural grant funds from Principal Co-Supervisor Robert Bates. The student will also attempt to obtain
additional external funding. The amount of the student's stipend at each institution is as dictated by ACE
CRC or University of Vermont regulations. The PhD student will receive health insurance from a
combination of University of Vermont Graduate College support and support from Principal Co-Supervisor
Robert Bates, and from the Australian Government under the Medicare program.
Timeline
15. The research will be carried out in both institutions approximately following the calendar found in
Appendix C. This calendar may be modified by agreement among the student and Co-Principal
Supervisors.
Agreement Review
16. The Agreement will be reviewed without prejudice, one year from this date.
Anything not covered in this addendum will be settled through consultation and mutual agreement by both
universities. Appendix D lists contact information for relevant parties at the University of Tasmania and
the University of Vermont.
