The documents which are in store or in the reserve (Paris), or in the annex (Meudon), can be accessed by filling in a request form. At Meudon, most of the works are open-access, which is so for only a small fraction of the documents on the Parisian site. Journals are classed by an inventory numer, while books by the CDU code. Classification of open-access works, CDU The CDU system (Classification Décimale Universelle - Universal Decimal Classification) is based on the use of arabic numbers. Classification is by theme, so that documents relating to the same main subject appear together on the shelves. The numerical code is followed b y three letters, usually the first three letters of the author's name. A decimal notation is implied : the numbers are not to be thought of as integers, but as *decimals*, i.e. they are treated (and read) as if they were preceded by 0 (zero, comma...). For example, the sequence of numbers 5, 52, 53, 510, 521, 536, considered as decimals, will be classified in the following manner : 5 510 52 521 53 536 By convention, to ease reading the code, a point is included after every group of 3 numbers, for example : 523.035.24 There are also in addition various other signs and symbols : brackets ( ), the colon :, the dash -, the slash / The principal themes found in the Library collection correspond to the following codes : • • • • 51 Mathematics 52 Astronomy-Astrophysics-Geodesy 53 Physics 54 Chemistry Copyright © Observatoire de Paris centre de recherche et enseignement en astronomie et astrophysique relevant du Ministère de l'Enseignement Page 2/2 supérieur
