Census in Zambia
The Zambia 2001 Census was a complex
operation that involved capturing vital data
from 13 million people and 4 million
households. In earlier census projects, it
had taken many years to capture the data.
In October 2000 the census started –
more than 30,000 enumerators across
Zambia began completing the 17 million
double-sided A4 forms. In January 2001,
DRS Optical Mark Readers commenced
scanning the forms. The project was
completed just 4 months later in May
2001, successfully and in record time.
The scanning was undertaken in
collaboration with the Examinations
Council of Zambia (ECZ), a long-term
customer of DRS. ECZs knowledge
and skills greatly assisted in the success
of the project.

other Census operations in other African countries.’
Planning for the project began in 1998
when DRS participated in a trade mission to
Zambia. In May 2000, a pilot project
comprising of a survey of 10,000 people
was then conducted using DRS
t e c h n o l o g y.
After 3 years of intensive trials and
demonstrations, the Zambian Government
awarded the contract for the 2001 Zambian
Census to DRS.
Within 3 weeks of
r e c e i v i n g t h e o r d e r,
DRS had designed,
printed and airfreighted the first
deliveries of the 17
million census
forms to Zambia.
The DRS solution to the Zambian Census
is widely held as a complete technical
success and is now becoming the model
for other census operations in other
African countries.
In fact, DRS was awarded a special
commendation for its innovate African
census work from the Milton Keynes &
North Bucks Chamber of Commerce.

Census in Zambia
Le Recensement 2001 de la Zambie fut une
opération complexe qui a concerné la saisie
de données vitales pour 13 millions de
personnes et 4 millions de ménages. Dans les
projets de recensement précédents, la saisie
des données avait pris plusieurs années.
Dans les 3 semaines suivant la réception
de la commande, DRS avait conçu,
imprimé et expédié par avion les
premières livraisons des 17 millions de
formulaires de recensement à la Zambie.
En octobre 2000 le Recensement
commença – plus de 30,000 agents
compteurs dans toute la Zambie
commencèrent à remplir les 17 millions
de formulaires A4 doubles. En janvier
2001, les Lecteurs de Marque Optique
DRS commencèrent le balayage
électronique des formulaires. Le projet fut
achevé juste 4 moisplus tard en mai 2001,
avec succès et en temps record.

opérations de recensement dans d’autres pays’
L’ é l a b o r a t i o n d u p r o j e t c o m m e n ç a e n 1 9 9 8 ,
date à laquelle DRS participa à une mission
commerciale dans la Zambie. En mai 2000,
un projet pilote comprenant l’étude de
10,000 personnes fut alors entreprise en
utilisant la technologie DRS.
Le balayage électronique fut entrepris en
collaboration avec le Conseil des
Examens de la Zambie (ECZ), client de
l o n g u e d a t e d e D R S . L’ e x p é r i e n c e e t l e s
compétences de ECZ aidèrent largement
le succès du projet.
Après 3 ans d’essais intensifs et de
démonstrations, le Gouvernement Zambien
accorda le contrat pour le Recensement
zambien 2001 à DRS.
La solution DRS pour le Recensement
Zambien est reconnu comme un succès
technique complet et devient maintenant
le modèle pour d’autres opérations de
recensement dans d’autres pays
africains.
