WHAT’S NEW
Introducing INSIGHT – a new
page on Westlaw Canada
CED Update
INSIGHT is a new page created on www.westlawcanada.com, which
highlights interesting cases and commentary. INSIGHT also contains legal
research related content, including online legal research tips, digests of
interesting cases, timely or relevant sections from the Canadian Encyclopedic
Digest (CED), and significant, unique or topical legal quotes and definitions.
You can follow our twitter feed @WestlawCanada to be notified of all updates
to this page.
Three new titles have been added to Westlaw Canada recently: Municipal
Corporations—Administration and Council, Municipal Corporations—General,
and Alternative Dispute Resolution.
The two new Municipal Corporations titles, plus a third title (to be published
shortly), are shared between the Ontario and Western editions of the CED.
They replace the Ontario and Western titles from the third edition. All three
titles will be updated annually.
Alternative Dispute Resolution replaces the previous Arbitration title, and was
prepared by Peter Eccles. Mr. Eccles was Assistant General Counsel to Bell
Canada for 30 years, providing legal assistance for major real estate and
telecommunication projects, such as Place Bell Canada in Ottawa, Bell Trinity
Square in Toronto, numerous large leasing projects and fiber optics
telecommunications systems throughout Ontario. He has revised numerous
CED articles, especially on real estate topics, such as landlord and tenant and
condominium law. He is also the author of Carswell’s Motor Vehicle Law in
British Columbia, and Traffic Safety Law in Alberta.
Two additional titles will be added to Westlaw Canada in the next month:
Human Rights and Municipal Corporations—By-laws, Permits and Legal
Proceedings.

When to use the root
expander and when to use
the universal character
The root expander (!) and the universal character (*) can both help you ensure
that you retrieve all relevant results. Use the root expander to retrieve words
with variant endings. For example, searching for “driv!” will retrieve “drive”,
“driver”, “driven”, “driving” and others. Remember to exclude the “e” at the end
of words when using the root expander: searching for “drive!” would retrieve
“driver” and “driven”, but not “driving”.
The universal character or wildcard (*) replaces a single character. It can be
very useful when a word has alternate spellings. For example, both
“marijuana” and “marihuana” are accepted spellings. Rather than searching for
both, enter the search term “mari*uana” to retrieve results with both spellings.
You can also use the universal character at the end of a search term to limit
the maximum length of that term. For example, searching “object***” retrieves
“objects”, “objected”, “objective”, “objection”, and “objecting”, but not
“objectionable”.

INSIGHT est une nouvelle page créée sur www.westlawcanada.com, sur
laquelle vous trouverez des décisions et des commentaires d’intérêt. INSIGHT
comprend également du contenu connexe à la recherche juridique, notamment
des conseils de recherche juridique en ligne,des résumés de décisions
d’intérêt, des sections pertinentes et à jour du Canadian Encyclopedic Digest
(CED) et des définitions et citations juridiques uniques ou par sujet. Vous
pouvez suivre notre fil twitter @WestlawCanada pour être avisé de toute
modification sur cette page.
Mise à jour du CED
Trois nouveaux ouvrages ont récemment été ajoutés à Westlaw Canada :
Municipal Corporations—Administration and Council, Municipal Corporations—
General et Alternative Dispute Resolution.
Les deux nouveaux ouvrages Municipal Corporations, de même qu’un
troisième ouvrage (qui sera publié prochainement) se trouvent tant dans
l’édition ontarienne que dans celle des provinces de l’Ouest du CED. Ils
remplacent la troisième édition des ouvrages de l’Ontario et des provinces de
l’Ouest. Les trois ouvrages seront mis à jour chaque année.
L’ouvrage Alternative Dispute Resolution remplace l’ancien ouvrage sur le
même sujet et est rédigé par Peter Eccles. M. Eccles a été adjoint au chef du
contentieux de Bell Canada pendant 30 ans. Il a offert son soutien juridique
pour les principaux projets en télécommunications et en immobilier, notamment

la Place Bell Canada à Ottawa, Bell Trinity Square à Toronto, de même que de
nombreux projets de location et systèmes de télécommunications à fibre
optique à l’échelle de l’Ontario. Il a révisé bon nombre d’articles du CED,
spécialement sur les sujets portant sur l’immobilier comme le droit entre
propriétaires et locataires et le droit de la copropriété. Il est également l’auteur
de l’ouvrage Motor Vehicle Law in British Columbia et Traffic Safety Law in
Alberta publiés par Carswell.
Nous ajouterons deux autres ouvrages à Westlaw Canada dans le prochain
mois, soit : Human Rights et Municipal Corporations—By-laws, Permits and
Legal Proceedings.

Quand utiliser le symbole de
troncature ou un caractère
de remplacement
Le symbole de troncature (!) et le caractère de remplacement (*) peuvent tous
deux vous aider à trouver tous les résultats pertinents. Pour trouver des mots
qui ne finissent pas de la même façon, utilisez le symbole de troncature. Par
exemple, une requête utilisant “driv!” générera des résultats pour “drive”,
“driver”, “driven”, “driving” et autres. Il faut se rappeler d’omettre la lettre « e » à
la fin des mots lorsque vous utilisez le symbole de troncature : la requête
“drive!” générera des résultats pour “driver” et “driven”, mais pas “driving”.
Le caractère de remplacement (*) remplace un seul caractère. Il peut être fort
utile lorsqu'un mot comporte différentes graphies. Par exemple, les deux
graphies “marijuana” et “marihuana” sont acceptées. Plutôt d'effectuer une
requête pour les deux termes, entrez le terme de recherche "mari*uana" afin de
trouver des résultats qui comportent les deux graphies. Vous pouvez aussi
utiliser le caractère de remplacement à la fin d’un terme de recherche pour
