An English Church in Lille: early days
WeknowtherewereEnglishresidentsintheLilleareafromthefirsthalfofthe19thcentury.Theywereworkers
orbusinessmen,andweremostlyengagedincommerceormanufacturing,particularlyinareasrelatedtothe
busytextileindustryofthetime.
TheFrenchReformedchurchlookedaftertheirspiritualneeds,anditwasnotuntilthemiddleofthecentury
thatserviceswereheldinEnglish,mainlybyacertainMrWBEdwardsandotherlaypeople.
ThereisabrassmemorialplatetothememoryofMrEdwardsandhiswife,andthebrasslecternwasalsogiven
inhisname.
Forthefirsttime,serviceswereheldbyanordainedministerfrom1848-1857andamemorialwindowto
ReverendWMestoncanbeseeninthechurchvestry.
Dèsledébutdu19°siècle,ilyavaitdesressortissantsbritanniquesdanslarégiondeLille,surtoutenraisonde
l’industriedutextile.SansEgliseanglicane,c’estl’Egliseréforméequis’occupaitdeleursantéspirituelle.Versle
milieudusiècle,uncertainMrEdwardsetsonépouseorganisaientdesofficesenanglaisetuneplaquesetrouve
dansl’égliseenleurmémoire,ainsiquelepupitreenbronze.
Lepremierprêtreanglaisestarrivéen1848etlevitraildelasacristieétaitinstalléensonnom.

A permanent home
ServiceswereheldindifferentroomsnotonlyinLillebutalsoinCroixandArmentières,butby1860,therewas
thefirstproposalforapermanentplaceofworship.
AplotoflandoriginallybelongingtothemilitaryandcededtothetownofLillewasgivenoverforthebuilding
ofanAnglicanchurch.ThecostofbuildingthechurchwastobebornentirelybytheBritishcommunityinLille
andoncecomplete,althoughthebuildingwouldbelongtothetown,itwouldbedestinedexclusivelyandin
perpetuityfortheusageoftheAnglicanchurch,inthechargeofanAnglicanminister.
ThechurchwasbuiltinamodernGothicstyle,butbasedon13thcenturyFrenchGothic–thecapitalsofthe
frontdoorcolumnsaregoodexamplesofthisstyle.
TheEastendofthechurchishoweverintheformofahalfoctagon,acompromisebetweentheusualEnglish
squareandtheFrenchsemicircle.
ThechurchwasconsecratedonAscensionDay1870(Thursday26May).
LavilledeLilleadonnéenperpétuitéunterrainpourlaconstructiond’uneégliseanglicane,auxfraisdela
communautébritannique.
Construiteenstylenéo-gothique,l’égliseétaitdédiéeen1870,lejourdel’Ascension(jeudi26mai).
Notezlaformedel’absideendemi-octagon,uncompromisentreledemi-cerclefrançaisetlecarréanglais.

Improvements
ThechurchhallbeneaththechurchwasfittedupandwasusednotonlyfortheSundayschoolandvarious
churchgatherings,butalsobytheBritishInstitute,formedin1868toprovidealibraryandentertainmentsfor
BritishResidents.
Theharmoniumwasreplacedbyanorgan,whichoriginallyranonwaterpower.Thisgenerallyworkedwell,but
onoccasionswhenthewaterpowerfailed,sodidtheorgan.Afterwards,thankstogenerousdonationsand
subscriptions,anewand“superior”organwasinstalledinanorganchamberonthesouthsideofthechancel,
andremovedfromitsoriginalpositionnexttothewestdoor.
Thegroundaroundthechurchwaspaved:atthetime,thechurchwasentirelyfree-standing.Theoriginal
gutterscanstillbeseeninthepresentcoveredpassageleadingtothelavatories,whichwerenotaddeduntil
muchlater.
Lasallesousl’égliseservaitnonseulementpourlesdifférentesactivitésdel’église,maisaussipourl’Institut
britannique,sabibliothèqueetsesspectacles,etdiversdivertissementsàl’intentiondelacommunauté
britannique.
Desorguesplusélaboréesontremplacél’harmoniumd’origineetmêmel’instrumentàénergiehydrauliquequi
setrouvaitàcotedelaported’entréeetqui«lâchait»àdesmomentsinopportuns.Leterrainautourdel’église
aétécarrelé.Onpeutvoirlescaniveauxd’originedanslepassageverslessanitaires,installéesbeaucoupplus
tard.

The Great War
On13October1914,afterasiegeandheavybombardment,LillewasoccupiedandcameunderGerman
administration.
TheLilloiswerecutofffromtherestofFrance:only25kmfromthefront,itbecameagarrisontownforthe
Germanarmy.Newspapers,cafésandthetheatrewereallrenamed,andclocksandwatcheshadtobesetto
Berlintime,onehourahead.
Theoccupationlasted4yearsand4days.Therewererestrictionsofallsorts,andextremefoodshortages
leadingtomalnutrition.
Butallthroughthistime,theReverendDMoorerefusedtoleave,andheldserviceseverySunday.Themarble
tabletandhonourrollbearwitnesstotheseyears.
Le13octobre1914,aprèsunsiègeetunintensebombardement,Lilleestenvahieetpassesousadministration
allemande.
Isolée,àseulement25kmsdufront,LilledevientvilledegarnisonetlesLilloisdoiventréglerleursmontresà
l’heuredeBerlin.4anset4joursdesouffrancesetdeprivations.
Maispendanttoutecetteoccupation,leRévérendMoorerefusedepartir,etilyavaitunofficetousles
dimanches.
Laplaqueetletableaud’honneurtémoignentdecettepériode.

The Inter-war years
Bombdamage,brokenstainedglasswindowsandaleakyroofwereallrepairedorreplacedduringthistime;
electriclightwasinstalledandanewheatingsystemtoo.
Itwasalsodecidedtorepairthehallfloorandwalls,build2cloakroomsandinstalllavatories;itwasatthistime
thatthepassagewaytotheeastsideofthechurchwascoveredin.
Thankstothetownhall,theroofandthestainedglasswindowswerereplaced,butalltheotherworkswere
paidforbydonationsandfund-raisingevents.
Pendantcesannéesentrelesdeuxguerres,lesdégâtsdesbombardements,lesvitrauxcassésetuntoitqui
laissaitrentrel’eauétaienttousréparésouremplacés.Unéclairageélectriqueetunnouveausystèmede
chauffageontvulejour.
Ilaétédécidéderéparerlesoldelasallesousl’église,deconstruire2vestiairesetd’installerdessanitaires;
c’estalorsquelepassageàl’estagagnéuntoit.
GrâceàlamairiedeLille,lesvitrauxetletoitdel’égliseontétéremplacés,maislesautrestravauxétaient
financésparlacommunautébritanniqueàl’époque.

World War II
AfterFranceandBritaindeclaredwaronGermanyon3September1939,anewBritishExpeditionaryForce
madeitswaytoFrance.SomeofthetroopswerebilletedinandaroundLille.
ManyofthemcametoChristChurch,andmanytotheBritishInstitutehallbeneaththechurch,whichwasused
forsocialeventsaswellasforthelibrary.
Oldermembersofourcongregationcanrememberdancesandmusicandtheexcitementofmeetingthe
soldierswhentheywerechildren.
Butin1940,thebattleforLillewasoverandtheGermanstookover.ManyBritishpeoplewereevacuated,
otherswereinterned.Therewasnopermanentchaplainandindeednoregularservicesformanyyears,
althoughtheruralDeanandvisitingpriestscametoLillewhenthecitywasliberatedin1945.
En1939,destroupesbritanniquesontenvoyésenFrance,etcertainsétaientlogésàLilleetauxalentours.
Beaucoupd’entreeuxvenaientàChristChurchetprofitaientdesdivertissementsproposésparl’Institut
Britannique.Certainsmembresdenotrecongrégationserappellentencorecesévénements.
Maisen1940,labatailledeLilleestterminéeetlesAllemandsoccupentlavilledeLille.L’églisen’apaseude
prêtrepermanentpendantplusieursannées,seulementquelquesofficesdetempsentemps.

The last 70 years
Thedifficultiesinpost-warFranceandEngland,thedeclineofthetextileindustry,togetherwithchangesin
society,allhadtheireffect.
Congregationsdeclinedandforsomeyears,therewasnopermanentAnglicanpriestinLille;serviceswereheld
lessfrequently.Fortunately,therewerealwaysvisitingpriestsfromBritainorothercitiesinFranceandBelgium
toministertothecongregation.
Newlifeandaneweracamewiththeappointmentofapermanentpriestin1998andChristChurchisgoing
fromstrengthtostrength.
Weministertoourowncongregation,trytoreachouttothelocalcommunityandsupportcharitiesinFrance,
intheUKandabroad.
