21 May 2014 Public electricity distribution networks contribute to the deployment of super-fast broadband Xavier Pintat, Chairman of FNCCR and Philippe Monloubou, Chairman of the Management Board of ERDF, signed a partnership agreement on 21 May 2014 on super-fast broadband to optimize conditions for massive use of electricity poles to enable faster and cheaper deployment of optical fibre. ERDF manages nearly 750,000 km of medium and low-voltage overhead lines (20,000 to 380 volts) under franchise contracts with energy associations (authorities organizing public-service electricity distribution). These lines supply all France's metropolitan departments; they constitute an invaluable resource for facilitating and accelerating deployment of super-fast broadband with costs and lead times 2 to 3 times lower than the construction of underground networks. The nationwide development of super-fast broadband long-awaited by households, businesses or public services will, as we know, depend on the capacity of operators and local authorities to construct hundreds of thousands of kilometres of optical fibre service networks. This partnership for super-fast broadband gives concrete expression to one of the commitments of the FNCCR-ERDF 2014-2017 protocol signed on 18 September 2013. This network concession will thus facilitate super-fast broadband coverage of all regions and help achieve national and European targets in this respect.
