EVELYN KLEIN Born in Santiago, Chile
EVELYN KLEIN Born in Santiago, Chile; she moved to Montreal in 1970. “My passion for printmaking has released me into a world of the unknown translated through the integration of traditional processes of lithography and etching, which I have combined with new techniques such as collagraphy.” Her work is a reflection of her preoccupation with humanity and its relationship with the universe. Fragmented images of man and woman surrounded by the forces of nature down below and the power of the universe up above carry our destiny. The earth, represented by nature (leaves, flowers, roots…) and the universe, represented by birds, feathers etc., with the human figure balancing the two poles, form a cycle: the cycle of life. She uses fine transparent printed fragments of Japanese paper collaged to the painting in process to add to the subtle mystery of the work. “The written word, in many languages, represents both my heritage and mankind’s universality. The images attempt to touch the place where frontiers are non existent.” STUDIES 2009 2008 2007 2006 2001 2000 1990 1988 1980-83 1970-76 1969-70 1968 Monotype in Mazatlan, with Glen Rogers, Mazatlan, Mexico Digital Photography, Monterey Peninsula College Photoshop & photoetching tutorial for printmaking, Center for Research Art Technology & Education, Mark Zaffron, Oakland, CA A collaboration of woodcut & digital printmaking, Anderson Ranch, Colorado Creative Digital Media, Jaimie Dagdigian, Monterey Peninsula College From Collage to Collograph,Robynn Smith, Casa Nambe, New Mexico Photoshop, Gavilan College, Gilroy, California. The earth, represented by nature (leaves, flowers, roots, etc.) and the universe represented by birds, feathers, etc. with the human figure balancing the two poles, form a cycle: the cycle of life. The pot represents the container of life, which unveils its mystery slowly. The written word, in different languages, represents my heritage and our own universality, where frontiers are non existent. It goes from the individual to the universal. TECHNIQUE I work on hand made paper and/or canvas, starting with transparent layers of acrylic washes, followed by collaged fragments of my prints. I then apply a few thin layers of acrylic medium to protect the paper, over which I draw from life models and still life, finishing in oils. The light plays a very important role in my work. I work with many layers in order to achieve this luminosity, creating a feeling of mystery. ‘FRAGMENTS OF LIFE’ These series of works is an exploration of the past and its integration to the present. The introduction of “Fragments of Life” triggers a reaction between the past, present and future. Fragments of man and woman surrounded by the forces of nature down below and the power of the universe up above, carry out their destiny: the cycle of life. The vessel, of Mayan origin, speaks of civilisations long gone. ‘MYSTERIES OF INTIMACY’ These series continue exploring, in depth, the theme of man and his relationship with the forces of creation. The window, which appears repeatedly in different sizes and shapes, is framed between the human figure, vessels and nature’s elements. Layers of my writings form a veil over these objects, creating the mystery.
