The Icelandic Fencing Federation would like to nominate our President
Mr. Nikolay Ivanov Mateev to the EFC Executive Committee and the
Promotion and Publicity Commission (P.P.).
Currently, Nikolay Mateev is a member of the Executive Committee of the
European Fencing Confederation and FIE’s Promotion and Publicity
Commission (P.P.) and a highly valued FIE’s observer for WC and GP
tournaments. He was member of the DT for the 2014 Senior World
Championships in Kazan and 2015 Senior World Championships in
Moscow. President of the DT for the European Cadets and Juniors
Championships in Novi Sad.
Nikolay Mateev has been involved in fencing for more than 45 years, most of
the time at an international level. He started fencing at the age of 11 years, and during his active fencing
career Nikolay Mateev achieved a wide range of very high results. He was more than 15 times Bulgarian
Champion individually or with his club team, he was individual Balkan Champion for juniors (1978) and many
times Balkan team Champion. Nikolay Mateev was further many times finalist at World Cup Saber
Tournaments. He won silver medals in team tournaments at the senior World Championships in Lausanne in
1987 and at the Universiade in Kobe in 1985.
For his achievements the Bulgarian Union for Physical Culture and Sport awarded him the titles "Master of
Sports of Fencing" 1977 and "Distinguished Master of Sports of Fencing" 1987.
In 1991 Nikolay Mateev moved to Iceland and took up the challenge of building up his sport in Iceland. There
were around 10 fencers in Iceland at that time. Now after 25 years we have 6 clubs and more than 400
fencers. The Icelandic fencers are currently Nordic Saber Champions for most of the different classes both
women and men.
In the meantime, Nikolay Mateev has served both as a trainer, as an administrator, and as a referee. With
his particular background, he knows fencing from every conceivable angle.
Nikolay Mateev has been working very hard to establish a Nordic Saber Center in Reykjavík. The Nordic
Saber Center was opened officially in June 2008 with EFC’s Training Camp and the Nordic Saber
Championships. Nikolay Mateev and the International Charity Fund “For the future of fencing” are the
founders of the “International Training Camp – Saber on Ice and Fire”. The main Goal of the Project is to
promote saber fencing all round the world, especially in smaller countries and also in countries without
tradition in saber. Giving them the opportunity to learn from world famous trainers and meet the World and
Olympic Champions.
We think that it will be very good for the world of fencing if Nikolay Mateev, who does so much for our
sport, gets even more involved, and it goes without saying that the election of Nikolay Mateev with his
professionalism to the Executive Committee will be a great encouragement for the fencing in general.

Au nom de la Fédération Islandaise d’Escrime, nous souhaiterions nominer
notre président, Nikolay Ivanov Mateev, au Comité Exécutif de la FIE et
Commission de promotion et publicité de la FIE.
Nikolay Mateev est actuellement membre du Comité Exécutif de la
Confédération Européenne d’Escrime et membre de la Commission de
promotion et publicité de la FIE, et il est un observateur très apprécié par la
FIE dans les tournois de la Coupe du Monde et les Grand Prix. Il était membre
du Directoire Technique lors des Championnats du Monde Senior à Kazan en
2014 ainsi qu'à l'occasion des Championnats du Monde Senior à Moscou en
2015. Il fut aussi Président du Directoire Technique lors des Championnats
d'Europe Cadets à Novi Sad.
Nikolay Mateev participe à la vie de l’escrime depuis plus de 45 ans, dont une grande partie au niveau
international avec plusieurs années parmi l’élite. Il débuta l’escrime à 11 ans, et durant sa carrière de tireur,
Nikolay Mateev a décroché un grand nombre de résultats de très haut niveau. Il fut champion de Bulgarie
individuellement ou par équipe plus de 15 fois. Il fut aussi champion junior des Balkans et plusieurs fois
champion par équipe des Balkans. Nikolay Mateev fut finaliste à de nombreuses reprises de tournois
internationaux de la Coupe du Monde de sabre. En 1987, il obtint la médaille d’argent par équipe des
Championnats du Monde séniors de Lausanne, ainsi qu’à l’Universiade de Kobé en 1985.
Pour ses résultats, le Ministère Bulgare de la Culture Physique et du Sport lui décerna les titres de « Maître des
Sports d’Escrime » en 1977 et « Grand Maître des Sports d’Escrime » en 1987.
En 1991 Nikolay Mateev s’est installé en Islande afin de relever le défi d’y développer son sport. A l’époque,
seuls 10 tireurs se trouvaient en Islande. Aujourd´hui, 25 ans plus tard, plus de 400 tireurs se répartissent dans 6
clubs. Les escrimeurs Islandais sont actuellement Champions Nordiques de Sabre dans la plupart des catégories
femmes et hommes.
Simultanément, Nikolay Mateev a dirigé l’entraînement ainsi que l’administration et l’arbitrage. Avec son
expérience particulière, il connaît l’escrime sous tous les angles imaginables.
Ces dernières années Nikolay Mateev a travaillé très ardemment pour établir un Centre Nordique de Sabre à
Reykjavik. Le Centre Nordique de Sabre a ouvert en Juin 2008 avec un Camp d’Entrainement de la CEE, et les
Championnats de Sabre des Pays Nordiques. La création de ce centre améliorera et encouragera la pratique du
sabre dans les pays nordiques à un plus haut niveau. Nikolay Mateev et la Fondation Internationale de
Bienfaisance « Pour l’Avenir de l’Escrime » ont établis en Islande le « Camp d’entrainement International
- Sabre de Glace et de Feu ». L’objectif principal de ce projet est de faire la promotion et de développer le sabre
autour du monde en particulier dans les petit pays et les pays qui n’ont pas une tradition de sabre. Ce camp
donne une occasion aux participants d’apprendre les techniques du sport auprès d’entraineurs renommés et de
rencontrer des champions du Monde et olympiques.
Nous sommes persuadés qu’il serait très profitable pour l’escrime si Nikolay Mateev, qui donne tant à notre
sport, pouvait être impliqué encore davantage, et il va sans dire sa nomination au Comité Exécutive serait un
encouragement majeur pour l’escrime en en général.
