Major improvements coming to the Coquihalla Highway

MERRITT ʹJati Sidhu, Member of Parliament for Mission-Matsqui-Fraser Canyon, was joined
today by B.C. Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone to announce a major
highway upgrade to the Coquihalla Highway that will provide additional safety for the
commercial trucking industry.
The Box Canyon chain-up area, located approximately 30 kilometres north of Hope on Highway
5, will undergo a significant expansion to accommodate up to 70 commercial trucks. This
project will also see the addition of new deceleration and acceleration lanes, as well as new
washroom facilities and more parking.
In addition to the Box Canyon chain-up area, work will begin on construction of a new chain-off
area at the existing Coquihalla Summit Recreational parking lot, as well as the extension of the
third southbound lane near the Great Bear Snow Shed.
These upgrades will improve the safety of Highway 5, a critical trade corridor linking the Lower
Mainland of British Columbia with the rest of Canada.
Trucks using Highway 5 during winter storms are required to use chains. Using chains helps
reduce the number of accidents, saves lives and keeps the highway open. Expanding the Box
Canyon chain-up area will provide a safe place for truck drivers to put chains on their trucks
and the new chain-off area will provide a safe place for them to take the chains off.
The Government of Canada will provide up to $7.3 million through the Building Canada Fund
and B.C. will provide $10.3 million toward this $17.6-million project.

Grande amélioration de la route Coquihalla à venir
MERRITT ʹM. Jati Sidhu, député fédéral de Mission-Matsqui-Fraser Canyon, était accompagné
aujourd'hui de l'honorable Todd Stone, ministre des Transports et de l'Infrastructure de la
Colombie-Britannique, pour annoncer que la route Coquihalla sera grandement améliorée afin
d'y renforcer la sécurité dans l'intérêt de l'industrie du camionnage.
L͛espace à Box Canyon permettant de poser des chaînes autour des roues des camions, soit à
près de 30 kilomètres au nord de Hope sur la route 5, sera agrandi considérablement pour
pouvoir accueillir jusqu'à 70 camions. Des voies de décélération et d'accélération seront
construites, et il y a aura de nouvelles installations sanitaires et plus d'espaces de
stationnement.
En plus de l͛espace prévu pour poser des chaînes à Box Canyon, un autre espace permettant de
retirer ces chaînes sera construit dans le stationnement de l'espace récréatif de Coquihalla
Summit. De plus, la troisième voie en direction sud sera prolongée près du pare-avalanche
Great Bear.
Ces améliorations accroîtront la sécurité de la route 5, un corridor de commerce essentiel entre
la région de la vallée du bas Fraser en Colombie-Britannique et le reste du Canada.
En période de tempête hivernale sur la route 5, les camionneurs doivent poser des chaînes sur
les roues de leur camion. Cette précaution permet de réduire le nombre d'accidents, de sauver
des vies et de garder la route ouverte. L'agrandissement de l͛espace permettant de poser des
chaînes et la construction du nouvel espace pour les retirer rendront l͛opération plus
sécuritaire pour les camionneurs.
À ce projet de 17,6 millions de dollars, le gouvernement du Canada consacrera jusqu'à
7,3 millions de dollars par l'entremise du Fonds Chantiers Canada, et la Colombie-Britannique,
10,3 millions de dollars.
