Works from the SAMMLUNG VERBUND, Vienna. Paul Dujardin Chief Executive Officer & Artistic Director Sophie Lauwers Head of Exhibitions 2 Cette année, l’exposition centrale s’intitule open spaces | secret places. Works from the SAMMLUNG VERBUND, Vienna. Paul Dujardin Chief Executive Officer & Artistic Director Sophie Lauwers Head of Exhibitions 3 editorial Since 2006, the Centre for Fine Arts (BOZAR) places numerous partners from the world of creative photography and related media in the spotlight during this biennial event. Indeed, the Brussels Summer of Photography now features on the international photography calendar. From a theme proposed by the central exhibition in the Centre for Fine Arts, the programme branches out both spatially and in terms of content. The central exhibition is open spaces | secret places. Works from the SAMMLUNG VERBUND, Vienna. While the collaboration with this Viennese collection already made for a popular edition back in 2014 with gender equality as its theme, this year curator Gabriele Schor is focusing on the relationship between people and the public space. The artists appropriate specific spaces through the medium of photography. Their artistic interventions and personal outlook influence how we as observers experience different surroundings. It is often hard to distinguish between the two atmospheres as the public and private domain come to light. Thanks to the intense collaboration with some 30 partners, the 2016 edition of the Summer of Photography is also a unique citywide project that accentuates the immense possibilities of the Brussels public space. This summer immerse yourself in the Urban Vibes of our capital with its numerous secret rooms and public spaces of Brussels. The increasing spatialisation of art goes hand-in-hand with our lifestyle, which has changed considerably in social and cultural terms as a result of new spatial conditions (virtual space, increased mobility). When talking to people on the phone in the past you asked: “How are you?”, now you say: “Where are you going?”. The exhibition showcases the works of twenty-eight contemporary artists such as Francis Alÿs, Eleanor Antin, Anthony McCall, Joachim Koester, Louise Lawler and Jeff Wall. Through their photographs and installations, the artists examine our relationship with space and take us through historical locations, emotionally charged spaces, and imaginary, real and reconstructed places. FR The urbanisation that Lagos has experienced is unprecedented. The metropolitan area has become Africa’s biggest megalopolis, overtaking Cairo. Dey Your Lane – Lagos Variations seeks to understand Lagos through the lens of those who can express their reactions and experiences in the city in a creative manner. The exhibition brings together the work of 24 photographers, both local and international. Despite the infrastructure challenges, Lagos is developing successfully: it is the headquarters of Nollywood, a film industry worth several billion dollars, home to the continent’s largest music industry, and a new contemporary art scene. Gbadolite © Colin Delfosse EN Gbadolite is a ruined utopia in the midst of the tropical jungle. Built at the end of the 1970s by order of President Mobutu, the city was to be a symbol of revival. To complete his dream, Mobutu spent millions equipping his native village with all the modern amenities that were lacking elsewhere in the country. Marble, stone and ostentatious luxury transformed the “Versailles in the jungle” into a parody of a city. Mostly unappreciated, Gbadolite crumbled with the downfall of the dictator behind it. EN The streets and large central city squares have always served as places for people and regimes to demonstrate force, communicate civic sentiment or voice social and political resistance. In just the last decade we have seen major public and organised gatherings – including the Arab Spring, the Occupy Movement, the Greek Protests and the Hong Kong Umbrella Revolution – that appropriate public space in order to forcefully express their discontent and need for change. This joint exhibition focuses on public space in the aftermath of various demonstrations. How are the streets appropriated? And what traces have the strikes, manifestations and protests left on the urban fabric? Pasqua Vorgia, Wall, 2015. FR Tobias Zielony’s series of photographs The Citizen, shown in the Venice Art Biennale 2015, portrays African refugees not as helpless people, but as subjects. FR Living in Delhi between 2010 and 2012, Olivier Culmann’s research as curator for ‘Photoquai Biennale’ led him to meet with several photo studios and editing labs specialized in advertisements and digital enhancement. In one lab he watched pictures being purged of unwanted people, invasive wires, ugly monsoon stains, left-overs… The finished images presented spotless scenes set under a clear blue sky with a shining sun. From Delhi to Goa, Culmann took shots of urban landscapes and locations before entrusting this lab to process them using its digital expertise. This exhibition shows the before and after landscapes. For the Summer of Photography, Pablo López Luz presents a series of aerial views of Mexico City entitled “Views from the Expanded City”. This series was born from the need to portray the consequences of the erratic urban spread upon the landscape, as well as the emergence of a new human-altered landscape, and the social, political and environmental significance of this transformation. In a megalopolis like Mexico City, constantly threatened by incessant population growth and a complete lack of infrastructure, the fragility of the relationship between man and his living space becomes increasingly apparent.
