- Yes, I love it. It’s a great city. I like the Chrysler Building
and the Empire State Building. You know, the Empire State
Building is taller and more beautiful than the Chrysler Building. At night, it’s wonderful.
- What’s your favourite place in New York City?
- Hmm, I think I like Liberty Island, where the Statue
stands, but Broadway is more lively.
- How tall is the Statue?
- I can’t remember the exact size but I know it’s smaller
than the skyscrapers of Manhattan!”
Je retiens
Pour comparer deux éléments, il y a plusieurs possibilités :
Les deux éléments comparés sont jugés égaux : as … as ; c’est le comparatif d’égalité.
Ex.: Peter is as tall as his father.
Central Park is as quiet as a small village.
Un élément est plus … que l’autre : c’est le comparatif de supériorité.
Ex.: The ESB* is more beautiful than …
The Madison Square Garden is bigger than I thought.
Pour construire le comparatif de supériorité, il faut bien regarder l’adjectif.
- si l’adjectif est court ; alors on rajoute -er et than
Ex.: The Statue of Liberty is smaller than the Eiffel Tower.
Reading is easier than writing!
- si l’adjectif est long, on place more devant l’adjectif et than derrière l’adjectif.
Ex.: Hiking is more difficult than walking.
Are lions more frightening than cats?
HELP: Un adjectif court est un adjectif de deux syllabes maximum.
Un adjectif long est un adjectif de trois syllabes ou plus.
