Course Syllabus
Course description
This intermediate’s course in French equally emphasizes the four skills of language
learning: listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing. Interactive materials
and a laboratory component create a multifaceted and challenging learning environment.
This course is appropriate for students with two or more years of high school French.
No prerequisite.
Course Objectives
Students will develop basic proficiency in French in a communicative environment. The
course focuses on the development of listening comprehension, speaking, reading and
writing skills, in addition to cultural awareness. Cultural contexts and authentic materials
will be utilized to promote an understanding of Francophone cultures.
After successfully completing the course, students will be able to:

Students will:
1. Understand the elements that make up a culture.
2. Define one’s own culture.
3. Make connections, comparisons, and contrasts between cultures.
Linguistic Skills
Students will:
1. Communicate orally using sentences or expressions in a variety of situational and
social contexts.
2. Integrate new and review vocabulary into written and spoken language.
3. Negotiate various verb tenses and moods in written and spoken language.
(present, passé compose, imparfait, future)
4. Extract information from written resources.
5. Extract information by listening and comprehending a variety of Francophone
speakers.
6. Extract information through viewing authentic visual material (i.e. video clips,
movies, commercials).
7. Build increasingly more complex sentences that communicate meaning in the
second language.

The textbook and additional materials required for this course are also required for
successful completion of FRE 102 Beginning French II and should be maintained in
usable condition for future courses.
Student Evaluation and Grading
Homework: 20% - All assignments are listed on the syllabus and are due on the date
posted
Quizzes: 40% - There will be a quiz after each chapter
Written Final Exam: 20% - This is a cumulative exam, it covers all 5 chapters
Final Oral Assessment: 20%- This is an Oral Proficiency Interview conducted
one-on-one at the end of the semester.
Make up is allowed ONE day after a missed class. No
exceptions.
The grade scale is as follows:
100-93=A
88-89=B+
81-80=B77-72=C
69-60=D
90-92=A87-82=B
79-78=C+
71-70=Cbelow 60=F
