Some new results : • Teens are more likely to participate in sports if parents are supportive, but not controlling. • Living in rural neighbourhoods (vs urban) is linked to greater maintenance of sport participation. • As feelings of competence, autonomy, and relatedness in sports increase, so does participation. Rural Children and their Communities Leading the Way Toward the Enhancement of Sports and Recreation The purpose of this study is to engage preadolescent children (grades 4–6) from rural communities in the development of relevant and meaningful research questions for exploring their participation and commitment to sports and other recreational activities. This research program will identify factors that may help relatively younger hockey players succeed in a developmental system that is biased against them. Key similarities and differences emerged for parental support behaviours between parents of athletes and parents of non‐ athletes, which present potential avenues for intervention. Transitioning to Inclusive Sport: Understanding Barriers to Transgender Canadians’ Participation in Recreational and High‐Performance Sport Team Family Pride Project: Youth Sport and LGBTQ Parents This project seeks to understand the complexities of diverse family structures within the social realm of organized youth sport, notably families of LGBTQ parents. It includes the perspectives of parents and children. A study examining athletes’ perspectives on transgender sport policies, as well as the impact these policies have on the lives of athletes and non‐athletes who identify as trans.
