Kouassi Kra Listen to Tupac talking about his mother and his definition of “Thug”. Then listen again and complete these notes. Choose from the words in the box. There are more words in the box than you need. (starts @1.38 ends @ 2.24) Love Black Dark Mixture Street Short Means Family Militant Well my mother was a woman. A woman. A single mother. Raising two kids on her own. So she was skinned. Had hair. Got no from nobody except for a group called the Black Panthers. So that’s why she was a Black Panther. Because I don’t consider myself to be straight, you know, militant. You know what i’m saying? I’m a thug. I’m a thug. And my thug comes from… my definition of thug comes from half of the element. Straight street hustling. And half of the Panthers element. Half of the independence movement. Saying we want self-determination. We want to do it by self-defense and by any necessary. That came from my family and that’s what thug life is. It’s a mixture. Study the documents below then match each still (picture from the film) with the correct synopsis (here excerpts from some Tupac’s songs) A. Double Wretchedness I’m just another black man caught up in the mix, clown with the Underground. And you can tell from my everyday fits that I ain’t rich. Trying to make a dollar out of 15 cents: break out or be clown, baby doll are you down? I get around. B. #Young, Convicted and Black# I tell you it’s a cold world, stay in school, you tell me it’s a man’s world, play the rules. He was a nice middle class Nigga, was only sixteen yet convicted as a felon with a bunch of old Niggas: straight from the Hall to the Penn. C. The Hell in a Pen The penitentiary’s packed and it’s filled with Blacks. Is life worth living? Should I blast myself? It takes skill to be real, time to heal each other. And as long as stay black, I gotta stay strapped and I never get to lay back. D. Corporate Plantations Is there a heaven for a G? Remember me. So many homies in the cemetery, shed so many tears. And though my soul was deleted, I couldn’t see it. But ain’t no future for me, I’m stuck in the game. I’m trapped inside a maze. E. To Zion Follow me, eat my flesh, flesh and my flesh. I’m a ghost in these killing fields. Hail ‘til I reach Hell, I ain’t scared. We’ve been traveling on this wayward road. Long time ‘til I been take a ‘eavy load. We won’t worry everything will come real. We runnin from the penitentiary, this is the time for we liberty: Hail Mary, Hail Mary. 3 Mois de l’Afrique 2014: Génération Hip-hop/Dancehall et Héritage Africain.
