This company's Phantom II is widely regarded as the most capable
fighter/bomber
ever developed. It carries an advanced and
powerful search radar, a b o m b load more than
twice that of the B-17 and various assortments
of guided weapon. Its performance is such
that it has held a whole string of world records,
including 98,557ft altitude, 1,390.24 m.p.h.
round a 100km circuit, a steady 903 m.p.h.
at an altitude never above 125ft, a series of
rate of climb records (e.g., 29,528ft in lmin
from a standing start) and a level speed (mean
of two passes in opposite directions) of
1,606.3 m.p.h. or about Mach 2.6. Current
production versions are the F-4B and RF-4B
for the US Navy and Marine Corps and the
F-4C and R F - 4 C for the U S A F . An F-4B
may be present at Paris.

After extensive market research Messerschmitt present three new aircraft projects in
model form. The first is the M e P 308 JetTaifun, a 5/6-seat executive and training
aircraft with two Turbomeca
Marbore
turbojets. T h e makers state: " T h e direct
operating costs per flight mile and passenger
are about 50 per cent higher than with twoengine propeller-type aircraft when based on
the same flying distance; the flying time, however, is only about half. In comparison with
today's jet-touring aircraft the direct operating
costs amount to 60 per cent approximately."
T h e second type is the Me P 160 short-haul
turbofan airliner for 48-58 passengers. Three
General Electric CF700-2B turbofans are

expected to give a cruising speed of 540 m.p.h.
, The third type is the Me P 141 freighter with
two unspecified turboprops of 1,000 h.p. each.
Light metal is used for stressed members and
glass-fibre reinforced plastics for secondary
components.
